Rick Vallin: Chief Mahala

Quotes

  • [last lines]

Jungle Jim : [gesturing to pile of golden treasure]  Well, Joan, this all belongs to you now.

Joan Martindale : No, Jim. This is for Mahala and his people.

Chief Mahala : Well, we are all without words to express our gratitude.

Jungle Jim : I wonder what happened to Skipper.

[Skipper walks up carrying a large banana in his teeth. He is soon joined by Tamba, the chimp, wearing the witch doctor's headdress, causing all to laugh]

  • Jungle Jim : And you say no one knows who she is or where she came from?

Reverend E.R. Holcom : Ever hear of Mr. and Mrs. John Martindale?

Jungle Jim : Archaeologists, weren't they?

Chief Mahala : They disappeared many years ago while on an exhibition up Lake Makongi. They were seeking the Lagoon of the Dead.

Jungle Jim : Lagoon of the Dead?

Chief Mahala : The ancient sacrificial lake of the witch doctors. It is a secret place, known only to them.

  • Reverend E.R. Holcom : So that's the situation, Jim. I realize you're not familiar with this district, but you are a man of the jungle. If anyone can find that girl, I'm sure you can.

Jungle Jim : How far is your village, Mahala?

Chief Mahala : It is only a day's journey. We can leave first thing in the morning.

Jungle Jim : Why wait until morning?

  • Chief Mahala : And, from what I've heard, the witch doctors each year selected a maiden for the sacrifice. They were brought out here on this sacrificial platform and were hurled into the lagoon to drown.

Barton : Drown? Why? Couldn't they swim?

Chief Mahala : Well, Not very well. You see, they were bound in gold chains and laden down with jewels.

Barton : Well, then all I have to do is bring that treasure up.

Jungle Jim : And what then?

Barton : Well, I'll split with you and Mahala, of course.

Jungle Jim : I'm not interested.

Chief Mahala : I'll have no claim to this evil place.

Barton : I guess it's all mine, then.

Jungle Jim : What about the girl?

    Barton : What about her?

Jungle Jim : Her parents died to find this place.

Barton : Look, I'll bring the treasure up while you and Mahala search for the girl. If you find her, I'll let her decide whether she wants to cut me in. How's that?

  • [discussing a blonde woman seen roaming the jungle with a tiger]

Jungle Jim : And you say no one knows where she came from?

Chief Mahala : That is right, Jim. My people call her the Wild Girl of Lake Makongi.

Reverend E.R. Holcom : They say she lives deep in the jungle, somewhere along the upper reaches of the lake. Strange stories are told of her amazing animal-like ability and her friendship with a tiger that follows her like a great dog. For some years now, she's been roaming the trackless wilderness, as wild and untamed as the jungle creatures who share her untamed life.

Jungle Jim : Have you ever seen her?

Reverend E.R. Holcom : No, but I've talked with natives who have - trustworthy natives who visit my mission and assure me she really does exist. Oddly, she never molests the common villagers but only attacks the witch men of the tribe, particularly against their chief medicine man, Hakeem, and from all accounts for years Hakeem has really been grimly determined to get rid of her but so far, his efforts have all ended in failure.

  • Barton : From the note the Martindale's left, the lagoon can't be far from this cave.

Jungle Jim : Mahala, this is Barton. He's searching for the treasure in the lagoon.

Chief Mahala : Others have searched - and died.

Barton : Perhaps they weren't as well-prepared as I am.

  • Barton : So you're Joan Martindale. I'm kinda sorry that Hakim found you.

Hakim : Girl must die; Mahala must die. Hakim will be chief.

Chief Mahala : Hakim will never be chief.

Hakim : [grabbing several gold chains]  Hakim make sacrifice - you and She-Devil to Great Power.

Chief Mahala : Why not sacrifice white man that steals treasure?

Barton : [brandishing his pistol]  This is why. This is the real power of the jungle.
