Good movie about a traditional family.

Sure, Father knows best, but not in this case. This was a very traditional movie in its time(1949). The tradition was that the father was the patriarch of the family. In this particular movie the father was not necessarily a model role. He was more a ridiculous one. The story, for whatever its worth, tells us the story of a Father-Son relationship which turns to be a supposedly funny interchange of situations. I particularly did not like this movie, but it is supposed to be among the best 25 movies in Mexico's Cinematography. Whether you like it or not, it is up to you. I did not see anything in this picture to make it so highly regarded by the Mexican official sites.

There is a black sheep on every family

A nice Mexican conservative family living in an old town in Mexico. Fun, entertaining, great drama and incredible acting.Soler role as an old man thinking is still young chasing young girls and cheating on his wife is an acting worth watching. Also, don´t miss mexican idol Pedro Infante´s best role ever.

An acting class by Soler
hawparks17 May 2005
This may not be Pedro Infante's best acting role, but Fernando Soler playing an unusual role for him, shows off his acting craft to the point that he makes it his picture. Adopting an almost perfect northern (norteno) Mexican accent, he succeeds to show the danger and stupidity of "machismo". I wonder if in those days it was really welcomed or understood. And this is why movies should not be forgotten. If we forget history, we are bound to make the same mistakes. Maybe the sequel ("No desearas la mujer de tu hijo") was not necessary to make. But with the same dramatical, comical and musical ingredients, it turn out to be just as entertaining. I wonder why nobody cares so far to restore all those Mexican gems from the 40's and early 50's.

I cannot believe that I saw the same film that everyone else saw! I thoroughly HATED this film.

Pedro Infante was a very good actor, so my hating this film has nothing to do with him or his acting in this movie. It's the plot and the writing--they were so awful and unsatisfying that I repeatedly considered turning off the movie!

Don Cruz is a horrible man. He is a drunk, a braggart, a coward, a womanizer and the lowest excuse for a father on Earth. Yet, despite this, his family is insanely loyal to them. Now I know that in the day Mexico was a very patriarchal society and some fathers took advantage of this and lived up to some crazy self-absorbed macho ideal. But Don Cruz goes WAY over the line and even the most loyal of children could only take so much physical and emotional abuse until they either leave this sick and very dysfunctional family or they kill their father. I was clearly rooting to see Silvano (Infante) the old creep once and for all...yet again and again and again, the father unmercifully mistreated his family and figuratively castrated his loyal son at every opportunity. How much is the audience to take?!?!

Had the film ended with the death of Don Cruz as Silvano whipped him to death, I could have allowed for the other 99% of this film. As it is, there was no comeuppance for Don Cruz--just a vile excuse for a human being mistreating everyone with impunity. And why would ANYONE want to see this?!

This film should be avoided but particularly by folks who have had abusive parents. It clearly will stir up a lot of anger and hatred within you. As a retired teacher and psychotherapist who used to deal with nasty bullies like this guy, I obviously had a strong emotional reaction. I don't mind this. But with no sense of justice just personal martyrdom and acceptance of a vile man, I see no reason to see this film. See one of Infante's other movies instead....any of them!!
