Episode 25 of 52: In which Kate confronts Angela Lansbury onscreen and the Blacklist offscreen and manages to beat both.
Early on, I stated that sometimes Kate’s career seems charmed. I’d venture 1948 is one of those charmed years. As we saw last week, Song of Love failed--Kate’s first failure at MGM. Yet some strange circumstances and good luck landed Kate in State of the Union, based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. I say “good luck” because in the fall of 1947, the storm that would become the Hollywood Blacklist was brewing, and Kate nearly got caught in the center of it.
Though not as cloyingly obvious as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - no light from the Lincoln Memorial in this film - State of the Union nevertheless delivers the classic Capra Corn package: nostalgia, patriotism, and a happy ending snatched from the jaws of tragedy at the last second.

Episode 24 of 52: In which Katharine Hepburn shows off her talented fingers.
I have the strangest sense of deja vu. Kate’s stuck in another melodrama about a young artist in love with a tortured composer. The composer is played by another foreign leading man. And I’ve created another set of box office graphs to answer KHep career questions through science. It’s like we never left Rko! I know you have a lot of questions--one being ”are you really going to start calling her KHep?” (Answer: Yes.) But first, let’s talk about the movie.
Song of Love is the highly inaccurate but very sweet story of Clara Wieck Schumann, a piano prodigy who marries tortured genius Robert Schumann (Paul Heinreid). Clara Wieck Schumann really was a piano prodigy, and she really did marry Robert Schumann and pop out babies like a human Pez dispenser. However, basically everything...

Episode 23 of 52: In which Tracy and Hepburn make a Western because why not?
A lone figure looks out over a vast, unending prairie. A wagon traverses rocky desert trails. Virgin land, a justice-seeking posse, a citified lawyer who brings civilization riding on his pinstriped coat tails. The Western dominated American film for over half a century with images like these. It stands to reason that two American stars and a director on his way to becoming a (controversial) American legend himself would take aim at the genre. The Sea of Grass, the resulting collaboration between Elia Kazan and the Tracy/Hepburn team, is an epic story covering multiple generations in the New Mexico Territory. It’s a Western, but not struck from the same heroic mould that John Ford was making them in Monument Valley. The Sea of Grass is meaner, more melodramatic, and ultimately a maverick mess of a movie.

★★★★☆Elia Kazan knew that he'd made a dud with the underwhelming Hepburn/Tracy vehicle The Sea of Grass (1947), even going as far as to discouraging audiences from seeing it. But that crushing disappointment evidently resulted in a new sense of creative purpose, with the director joining forces with newsreel producer Louis de Rochemont to make Boomerang! (1947), a pioneering docudrama that seized on immediate postwar anxieties to shine a light on a new form of civic malaise. Based on a real case and fuelled by his appropriation of the neorealist palette, Kazan filmed on location in Stamford, Connecticut and turned the town in on itself; civil blood making civil hands unclean.

Elia Kazan is one of my top five favourite American filmmakers of all time, and so I decided to ask our staff to rank his films. If you are not yet familiar with the filmmakers work, now would be a good time to start. Kazan was one of the most honoured and influential directors in Broadway and Hollywood history and introduced a new generation of unknown young actors to the world, including Marlon Brando, James Dean, Warren Beatty, Carroll Baker, Julie Harris, Andy Griffith, Lee Remick, Rip Torn, Eli Wallach, Eva Marie Saint, Martin Balsam, Fred Gwynne, and Pat Hingle. Noted for drawing out the best dramatic performances from his cast, he directed 21 actors to Oscar nominations, resulting in nine wins. The source for his inspired directing was the revolutionary acting technique known as the Method, and Kazan quickly rose to prominence as the preeminent proponent of the technique. During his career,...

Star-maker, success, scoundrel – Elia Kazan defined his era. David Thomson marvels at the divisive subject of Martin Scorsese's new documentary
One way and another, in the middle decades of the 20th century, Elia Kazan became a central figure in American culture. He offered himself as the archetypal despised immigrant who had made it in the new world. He had been born in Istanbul in 1909 and he arrived in New York in 1913 as the son of a rug merchant. He was smart, hugely ambitious, drawn to women, and an inspiring conspirator (and betrayer) with guys. He went to a good school, Williams College in Massachusetts, but felt looked down on by the upper-class white girls. So he slept with them, and he excelled at every competitive urging. In the early 30s he apprenticed to the Group Theater as an actor, a possible director and a handyman who could fix physical problems – chairs,...

Episode Title: "The Kingsroad"
Written By: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
Story: Picking up right where episode one left off, the royal court readies to depart from Winterfell and head to King's Landing with Ned Stark (Sean Bean) as the Hand of the King. But no one, especially not Queen Cersei (Lena Headey) and her twin brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), are happy to leave the comatose Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) behind before he wakes up and shares why he "fell" out of a high tower. With his mother Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) watching over him at all times, Ned heads south and his bastard son Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) heads north to dedicate himself to the Night's Watch at the Wall.
Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clark) begins to adapt to Dothraki culture instead of just being a victim to her husband Khal Drogo's (Jason Momoa) brutish ways.

Chicago – We cover hundreds of Blu-rays and DVDs at HollywoodChicago.com every year and most are of the current variety, so it’s always nice to see a well-presented catalog title, a collection that makes a better gift for the classic movie lover in your family than, say, “Little Fockers” or “Yogi Bear.” Fans of Turner Classic Movies will love “Tracy & Hepburn: The Definitive Collection,” a solid 10-disc set eight movies, some of them great, and a fantastic tribute to a celluloid legend.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0
The dynamic between Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn was always one of my favorites because it was never flashy. There wasn’t the steam heat of a pair like Bacall & Bogart or the tempestuousness of Burton & Taylor. There seemed to be a mutual admiration between the two Oscar winners that subtly made its way to the screen in classics like “Woman of the Year,” “Adam’s Rib,...

After the massive success of Sgt. Bilko, creator Nat Hiken moved on to birth another of my absolute favorite comedies, Car 54, Where Are You? (Shanachie, Not Rated, DVD-$39.98 Srp). It’s been one of those shows whose arrival on DVD I’ve long wished for, and the wait was worth it, as the first season has been mastered from the original 35mm prints, and looks better than it’s ever been.

A look at what's new on DVD this week:
"A Summer in Genoa"
Directed by Michael Winterbottom
Released by Entertainment One
Of the many films Michael Winterbottom ("A Mighty Heart," "9 Songs") has directed in recent years, you wouldn't guess the one starring recent Oscar winner Colin Firth as a father who must take care of his two daughters in the wake of a car accident involving their mother (Hope Davis) would be the one to have trouble making it to the U.S. But here we are three years after "Genova," as it's known in much of the rest of the world, was shot and it's finally arrived on DVD, a mix of supernatural thriller and human drama that's actually getting reasonably good reviews upon its delayed release. Catherine Keener co-stars.

Tracy and Hepburn the Definitive Collection I've mentioned this collection twice in the last two weeks in my Sunday What I Watched columns and I know I will be mentioning it again this week after watching Keeper of the Flame. Suffice to say, considering everything releasing this week this nine film collection is my top pick.
For anyone that's seen The Adjustment Bureau and fell in love with the chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, this is a release for you as Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn had a chemistry unlike any other and this set puts it all on display. Now I won't say every film included is a winner, but I will say Hepburn and Tracy make a film hard not to enjoy.
The great thing about this collection is Warner Home Video was able to...
