Lois Lane acts in the most selfish of ways, endangering the life of Clark Kent for her own gain. Yes, she is a successful reporter, but if it weren't for Superman, she would be in a cemetery. In the one she steals his press pass, not allowing him to investigate the eruption of a major volcano which endangers a whole village and herself. She doesn't know that Clark is Superman (one of those amazing things, but that's the way it is). Superman is there, naturally, but her actions make it incredibly hard to do his job. He must divert a lava flow and keep a mass of the molten rock off our fair maiden's head. There are some nicely drawn scenes concerning the erupting volcano.

I love the Fleischer Superman cartoons. The animation is smooth and fluid with vivid colors. The distinct art-deco style, vintage science fiction imagery, and use of noirish shadows gave them a look unlike any other cartoons. The music and voice work is superb. They're fun, accessible, enduring animation classics.
Mt. Monokoa, which has been dormant for about 300 years, is getting ready to erupt. In order to save the town at its base, some scientists plan to blow away the rim of the volcano facing away from the town. The hopes being the lava would flow towards the sea and spare the town. Lois and Clark are sent to cover the story, but Lois has stolen Clark's press pass so that she can have the story to herself. While Lois is being given a tour of the volcano, it erupts (of course). In the town below, Clark changes into Superman and tries to save Lois and finish the job the scientists started with altering the lava flow away from the town.
This is the eighth in the series and, while it's still entertaining, some noticeable flaws stand out more than usual. For starters, the action isn't quite as good as you might expect given that a freaking volcano is erupting. Then there's some rather sloppy animation in the later parts of the cartoon. They also try to replicate the spectacular sequence from The Magnetic Telescope where Superman picks up two ends of wire and conducts electricity through his body. It does not have the same impressive impact as the earlier cartoon, however. It's not one of the series' best but still enjoyable.

As part of sitting through the old 1940s "Superman" animated stories, I came upon the 1942 "Volcano".
I have watched it before, during my childhood in the 1980s, so it wasn't exactly anything new and undiscovered for me. However, I will say that it was nice to get to sit down and watch it again. I watched it for the first time about some 40 years after it was initially released, and then watched it against some 40 years after my first time watching it. I am sort of seeing a pattern here.
The storyline in "Volcano" was pretty straight forward. However, I found the story that Bill Turner and Carl Meyer wrote for this particular short animated feature to be a bit too simplistic. Sure, it is limited what you can manage to accomplish in just 8 minutes, but some of the other stories from the same era were more well-rounded.
Sure, "Volcano" was watchable and enjoyable, and definitely felt like something in the spirit of "Superman". The narrative was just a bit too generic and predictable.
All in all watchable for what it was. My rating of "Volcano" from directors Dave Fleischer and Willard Bowsky lands on a six out of ten stars.

This is the eighth Superman cartoon made by Max and Dave Fleischer. In this one, Clark Kent and Lois Lane are assigned to an island whose volcano is about to erupt. Lois ends up going alone since Clark "lost" his press pass (Ms. Lane hid them in her purse). Too bad for her since she ends up almost surrounded by lava. Good thing Superman happens to be around...Pretty exciting when the lava flows especially whenever Lois is climbing on an overhead wire as she tries to escape to a nearby cablecar. I'm not sure how Supes can save all those people down below with the lava flowing nearby though I have to assume they all knew the dangers involved and evacuated just in time. So in summary, Volcano was pretty exciting for a Superman cartoon.

Mt. Monokoa (located on a nice little island) seems like it's about to erupt. Naturally there's a town right at the base of the mountain. Reporters Clark Kent and Lois Lane are sent to cover the story for the Daily Planet. While there Lois hides Clark's press pass so she can see the mountain for herself and "scoop" him on the story. While Lois is at the top of the mountain it explodes! She's trapped up there with the lava flowing all around. Superman is around but how can he save her and the entire town?
Very good cartoon--quick-moving, beautifully animated and some very nice sequences when the volcano explodes. Never a dull moment--I especially like how Lois tries to escape from the lava! Worth catching.

Meant to be shown in movie theaters, they are miles ahead of their Saturday Morning counterparts. Bud Collyer is the voice of Superman; Joan Alexander does the honors for Lois Lane.

"Volcano" is a very weak installment of the short-lived Superman series from the Fleischer Brothers. I say weak because they made Lois very despicable and I really found myself rooting for her to die! This is because Lois and Clark are sent to cover the same story--a volcano is about to erupt (WHY WOULD YOU NEED TO GO NEXT TO THE MOUNTAIN TO COVER THIS?!). However, Lois wants the story for herself and deliberately sabotages Clark so he will be left out in the cold. So, when the volcano explodes, she is about to die and Clark jumps to save her. She learns NOTHING from the situation other than selfishness and stupidity pays! I really wish they'd made Lois less a jerk and victim and more a tough-as-nails and resourceful lady like they did in "Secret Agent" (1943). Overall, a rather weak installment, as fomenting hatred for your female lead is NOT a positive thing!

This is another great Superman cartoon, not one of the best the Fleischers made, but still entertaining.
The story is about this fictional volcano called Mt. Monokoa, on a fictional unnamed island. On this island occurred the mightiest erruption that ever shook the earth, burying the beautiful city beneath it in molten lava, and creating destructive tidal waves that raced around the world. For 300 years, the mighty volcano lay dormant. A new and more beautiful city sprang up at its base. But now, after centuries of inactivity, slight tremors are being felt. Scientists of course watchfully check delicate instruments to determine the seriousness of the renewed activity. And that's when Lois and Clark of course are sent to report about it. On arrival, Clark has lost his press pass, but without him knowing, it's actually Lois who has stolen his press pass. As Clark goes to the town to acquire another pass, Lois takes a tour of the volcano. Her guide tells her that the plan to save the city is to blow a hole in the side of the volcano, thus altering the course of the lava flow away from the town, to the ocean on the other side of the island. Suddenly, the volcano begins to erupt, and lava spews out of its top, flowing towards the town. Lois and her guide are separated. Two men on the other side of the volcano scramble to get to the machinery which will blow a hole in its side, but a giant boulder cuts the wire connecting the dynamite to the machine. Now it's up to Superman to save the day.
Not one of the best ones that the Fleischers made, i like the other ones better. I don't know how to explain why. Maybe some of the animation is a bit sloppier than in the others. And the cartoon also tries to copy the spectacular scene in the Magnetic Telescope, where Superman grabs both ends of this cut wire, allowing the electric current to run through his chest from arm to arm, in the end of this cartoon. Some on IMDB also complain that Lois is a brat, when she steals Clark's press pass. Stuff like that doesn't really ruin the cartoon for me, since in my opinion it only makes the characters more realistic. So with all of that said, what did i like about this cartoon. Well i like the fact that in this one, it's not a villain or a monster Superman is fighting, for once, but a natural disaster. Fighting natural disasters is also a very cliche superhero challenge or task nowadays, but like i said in my review of Billion Dollar Limited, the plots in these shorts were original for they're time, and were some of the first films with these kinda plots. And this is the first and only time in this series, that Superman is fighting a natural disaster. Something different from the other cartoons, but great. I also really love the animation on the lava. And there are some really exciting scenes where Superman saves the town from the Volcano in this. My favorite scene is when Superman flies up to the volcano, catching a huge boulder hurtling toward the town and flinging it into the ocean. Great stuff!

Only for Lois to take Clark's press pass. So he cannot get access. Although why they need a press pass is another question. They were the only two journalists travelling.
While Clark Kent goes to the police station to get another press pass. The volcano erupts.
Lois Lane is trapped. Mainly because she waited around until someone told her to get out of there.
It takes a while for Clark to notice the tremors. When he does, it's a job for Superman.
It is simply a case of Superman saving the island from the volcano and saving Lois Lane.

"Volcano" is another Superman cartoon by Fleischer from the days of World War II, so this one is already almost 75 years old and like some of the others, there is no villain in here as Superman is up against nature this time when a gigantic volcano starts erupting. Can Superman save the city? You know the answer. It would not be Superman if he couldn't. But you just cannot leave little Lois alone can you? It's basically a guarantee that something bad is going to happen. Anyway, I personally did not find the story in this 8-minute cartoon too entertaining and I would say it is not among the best or worst of the series. All in all, my verdict is negative and I do not recommend the watch. Thumbs down. Lets hope the next ones are more interesting again.

Eighth film in the Paramount series is by far the weakest so far. Lois and Clark are sent to report on an active volcano when the thing starts to go off trapping Lois inside, Superman must once again come to the rescue but all the results are rather lame. There's really not too much going on in this short, which is why it's the weakest of the series so far for me. The movie even has some fairly poor animation including one scene where we see Lois walking through the lava and yet nothing every happens to her because of it. The short also runs about a minute shorter than the previous films and all the action seems missing. There's one good sequence where Superman must save something from crashing into the lava but that's about it.

In VOLCANO, Superman must save a village from annihilation while also rescuing the adventurous Lois Lane. A volcano has erupted, spewing lava.
Another entertaining entry in the Fleischer brothers' animated series. True to the formula, Lois goes off on her own, leaving Clark behind. Soon enough, it's up to Superman to save her and everyone else.
Lots of volcano action ensues. The template for all future superhero films has been set firmly in place...
