Although the onscreen credits say "original screenplay", a $200,000 lawsuit was filed against the screenwiters, MGM and producer Joe Pasternak by playwright Ferenc Herczeg in 1949, claiming they took the idea from his 1903 play. Herczeg was in a Nazi concentration camp in 1942 when the film was released, and didn't hear about it until 1948. The case was settled out of court for a substantial amount.
The play was first performed in Hungary, but an English version ("Seven Sisters", translated by Ferike Boros) opened on Broadway, New York City, New York, USA on 20 February 1911 and had 32 performances.
Ann Rutherford was originally cast as Albert but she came down with the measles just before filming started. With nearly every other MGM starlet already employed as one of the 'seven sweethearts,' producer Joe Pasternak was forced to borrow Peggy Moran from Universal.
