George Waggner's 1941 horror film "The Wolf Man" introduced audiences to, essentially, the "second officer" of the Universal Monsters canon. Everyone knows that Dracula is the captain of the monster ship, and that Frankenstein is his first officer (a position he often shares with the Bride). The Wolf Man is always third in command, perhaps serving as a security officer or an enforcer. Mummies, gillmen, invisible men, Dr. Hydes, and other ancillary ghouls serve lower down in the crew.
Watching the original "Wolf Man" film, however, reveals a dark and sad tale about Larry Talbot who is attacked by a wolf on a misty night in Wales, afflicting him with the curse of the werewolf. Throughout the year, Larry will transform into an animalistic wolf/human creature and stalk and kill random victims. The tale is terrifying and tragic and inspired many pop culture tales to follow -- as well as many nightmares.

Long before Jigsaw and Annabelle, Ghostface and Samara—going back to even before Freddy and Jason—there were the Universal Monsters. These were the creatures and character designs who were so iconic that they defined what the horror genre was to most moviegoers during the earliest decades of talking pictures. Primarily released in two film cycles by Universal Pictures across the 1930s and ‘40s (plus a few outliers on both sides of this), the legacy of these films and the people who made them endures still. It echoes in Halloween costumes and TV specials, merchandise toys and candies, it’s even informing recent Blumhouse films and Netflix’s Wednesday. Right now, you can go to any Universal theme park and meet the Monsters as un-goodwill ambassadors at “Halloween Horror Nights.”

One of only seven known to exist, an extremely rare Frankenstein 1931 poster is now up for grabs from Heritage Auctions, expected to exceed $150,000 when all is said and done.
At this time, the current high bid is already at $77,500!
The team explains, “Frankenstein was hiding in a Pennsylvania attic all along. This 1931 Style A movie poster designed by the legendary Universal Pictures art director Karoly Grosz, that is, not the man nor the monster. There are only seven known surviving examples of this Frankenstein, and until this year, it was tucked away in the perpetual night beneath the eaves of a home in The Keystone State. And now it comes out to roar once more at Heritage Auctions.

The Spider Woman Strikes Back
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1946/ B&w / 1.33:1 / 59 Minutes
Starring Gale Sondergaard, Brenda Joyce, Kirby Grant
Directed by Arthur Lubin
People are measured by the company they keep—in a superhero’s case, that company is usually the supervillain. Villains, besides giving the hero a reason to exist in the first place, can liven up the joint; a dam burst here, a toppled bridge there, chaos and special effects ensue, and the popcorn munchers are happy. Sherlock Holmes was one of the few heroes who was fun all by himself (due respect to Dr. Watson)—the detective’s obsessive-compulsive brilliance, his monkish lifestyle, and his fondness for beekeeping and cocaine were just some of his more endearing quirks.
The filmed versions of Conan Doyle’s most famous character—not a superhero but seemingly immortal—were not so concerned with Holmes’s idiosyncrasies. This was especially true...

William Smith, the action star who tussled with Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can, made a lasting impression as the evil Falconetti on TV miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man and was a regular on the final season of Hawaii Five-o, died July 5 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA. He was 88.
His wife Joanne Cervelli Smith confirmed the death. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Smith was born in Columbia, Mo, in 1933 on his family’s cattle ranch where he grew up surrounded by many beloved horses. Although the Smith family moved to Southern California before he was 10, it was his time spent on the ranch that influenced the roles he’d take during his more than seven decades-long career in TV and film.
He began his career in entertainment as an extra in 1942’s The Ghost of Frankenstein when he was eight years old.

Perhaps Universal’s most renowned contributions to cinema lie in their horror library. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, if you can name it they probably made it. But until now, that awesome catalogue was unavailable to view in one place. Sounds like the grousing of a spoilt millennial, I know. The fact is that we’ve all become accustomed to having content at our fingertips. Praise be then that a streaming service has today launched to fulfil that demand. Peacock brings Universal’s esteemed horror collection to the masses.
Unlike its rivals, the service has both a paid-for package and a free one (though you’ll have to contend with adverts). Why not take a look at all the horror films currently available for free, though? Trick question, as there’s no reason why not to. That’s why all the horror films currently available for free are listed below.

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies and many more at Trailers From Hell. What else are you doing while stuck at home?
Wine aficionados like to think that wine is a living entity. It breathes! Let the wine Breeeeathe and it really “comes alive.” It evolves! That’s why wine is aged, and why it tastes different over the years as it gets older. Sure, wine comes from living things – grapes. But those grapes gave their lives to make that bottle. A bottle from which you’re probably drinking, since the pandemic has caused us to drop such societal niceties as stemware.
All those dead grapes have me thinking that if wine is anything, it’s a monster, created from once-living parts to do the bidding of its master. Bwa-ha-ha-ha-haaaa.
Son of Frankenstein came along in 1938, a good vintage for horror at Universal Studios.

Abbott & Costello – The Complete
Universal Pictures Collection
Blu ray
Shout! Factory
1940-1955/1:33-1:85
Starring Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff
Directed by Arthur Lubin, Erle C. Kenton, Charles Barton
Two footloose Jersey boys with no particular place to go, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello finally found themselves – literally and figuratively – on the burlesque stage. Their act, equal parts smart talk and ancient slapstick, was honed alongside curvy chorus girls and tassel-twirlers but it took a lady of a decidedly different stature to make them superstars. On March 24, 1938, Kate Smith, “The First Lady of Radio”, invited them to perform “Who’s On First”, a routine delivered with such hairpin curve precision it left listeners breathless. That appearance fast-tracked the duo to their own radio series and a contract with Universal Pictures.

Clap for The Wolf Man, folks: no Universal monster has endured the solitary pain of a cursed table for one like Larry Talbot; Dracula has his brides, and Frankenstein’s monster has his creator in his corner. Not so Larry, and especially not in the first of his adventures, The Wolf Man (1941), George Waggner’s classic tale of a lovable guy with an extreme follicle condition.
This wasn’t Universal’s first draw in the werewolf sweepstakes, however; that honor goes to 1935’s Werewolf of London starring Henry Hull, but his muted appearance kept audiences away. But after the success of their other monster franchises, they decided to give the lycanthrope another chance. This time it stuck.
The Wolf Man was such a big success that it finally launched star Lon Chaney Jr.’s career in horror after several years of bit parts as part of his Universal contract; it also set up several sequels,...

I did it, guys! One of the goals I set for myself this October was to go through the entire Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection box set, because it felt like the perfect opportunity to revisit so many classic films, but also fill in a few gaps for me as a fan, as there were a handful of films I just never had the opportunity to watch before this set existed. And while it took up pretty much every second of my free time this month, making time for the Complete Collection felt like I was getting to experience my very own film studies on some of the most influential and unforgettable horror movies to ever grace the silver screen, plus it also helped get me into the mood for this year’s Halloween season.

Movies never end up as they were originally envisioned. For various reasons, directors often decide not to film a section of the shooting-script. Also, throughout the production and post-production process of filmmaking, the cutting-room floor becomes cluttered with scenes, plots or characters that were chosen for deletion. Sometimes, these deleted scenes or subplots would have changed the entire film. Here are 9 movies with abandoned storylines would have altered the way we look at the overall movie.
The Cloverfield Monster was a young child: We never find out very much about the rampaging monster that attacks New York in Cloverfield. Where did it come from and why did it attack the city? Jj Abrams has said that, in the original conception of the story, the creature was a child belonging to an ancient Lovecraftian race that lies sleeping in the depth of the ocean. A young child from this race is awoken by a crashing satellite.

Halloween is almost upon us and there’s no better time of year to watch some of your favourite horror films, or better yet…discover something new to terrify you for the very first time.
These are ten films that I always find myself watching during the Halloween season.
1. The Universal Monsters
I’m cheating a bit here but try as I might I just couldn’t narrow it down to one. While none of these films are necessarily scary from a modern perspective, nothing gets me in the Halloween mood quite like a dose of good ol’ Universal Monsters.
Horror Trivia: Lon Chaney, Jr. played all four of the big monsters during Universal’s monster heyday. He played Frankenstein’s monster in The Ghost of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man in The Wolf Man, Dracula in Son of Dracula, and The Mummy in The Mummy’s Ghost.

Draft Day I guess the discussion before releasing Draft Day was whether or not to take advantage of the start of the NFL season with the theatrical release or the DVD and Blu-ray release and the home video marketing team won because clearly that's the reason for bringing it out today, but does anyone care at this pointc The movie is no good, especially for anyone with a passing understanding of, or interest in, the NFL.

Lon Chaney, Jr. was a star in the silent film era of the 1930s and 1940s who played some of the most iconic monsters ever including Frankenstein's Monster (in the Ghost of Frankenstein), The Wolf Man, The Mummy and the Son of Dracula. In a way, his face is famous although most people likely have forgotten his name since his passing in 1973. But Chaney Entertainment, a company run by the actor's heirs, is reminding Universal about the Chaney legacy with a lawsuit that seeks $1 million in damages for exploiting the

Randy goes monster huntin’!
The thing that always amazed me about Frankenstein is how easily he went from horror to comedy. In the movies, the good doctor’s scrapheap project was scary. On TV, Fred Gwynne’s footstomping caricature of Frankenstein’s monster in “The Munsters” took only a little reworking to make Herman Munster a lovable TV dad, even if he was built in a mad scientist’s workshop.
“The Ghost Of Frankenstein” continues the series of Universal sequels in the Frankenstein house of horrors with Lon Chaney as The Monster and Bela Lugosi as Ygor. Ygor brings the big guy to Dr. Frankenstein’s son and before long, the villagers are breaking out the torches again.
There’s no comedic flair here – “Lily, they want to set me on Fire! Haw ha ha ha” – but a fair dose of horror and a wash of pathos is enough to...

In less than a week is Labor Day, traditionally the end of summer for many Americans, though the official end is not until Sept. 22nd, the date of the autumnal equinox. Time for fun in the sun is drawing to a close. I’d like to recommend some horror stories and nightmarish novels to give you some chills for the few hot days left in 2010.
Let’s start with some downloadable stories in audio form, and begin with some of the classics. These are all free (they’re in the public domain), and will remind you of some of the greatest monster movies ever made.
The first is “The Picture in the House”, a story by the influential horror author H. P. Lovecraft. With themes of cannibalism and insanity, it reminds me of Hannibal Lecter of Silence of the Lambs, of the mad clan in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and...

Robots in our past and present, in film and real life.
What Is a robot? Everything from a real-life car assembly machine to a fictional artificial human being gets called a “robot.”
The Merriam-Webster Online site gives its main definition of the term this way: “A machine that looks like a human being and performs various complex acts (as walking or talking) of a human being, also: a similar but fictional machine whose lack of capacity for human emotions is often emphasized.”
That lack of humanity in a humanoid shell is what makes a great movie robot a great monster.
There were robots in films before the term “robot” was created. In fact, robots have been in films for as long as films have been a widely available entertainment.
