Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy: 'Jackie.' Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy in 'Jackie' Notwithstanding the box office-friendly Thor movies, which revolve around Chris Hemsworth in the title role, Natalie Portman has yet to have a star vehicle as impactful as Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, which earned her the Best Actress Academy Award nearly five years ago. Who knows, perhaps Pablo Larraín's Jackie will be one such vehicle; the biopic following U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in the days after President John F. Kennedy assassination is slated for a 2017 release. The image above is the official “first look,” initially posted at Deadline.com. Also in the Jackie cast: Peter Sarsgaard as Robert Kennedy, Max Casella, Beth Grant, and Greta Gerwig. Darren Aronofsky and Juan de Dios Larraín are the two credited producers, while Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner, The Divergent Series: Allegiant) is the credited screenwriter.

Most people today would likely be shocked to think that in 1972, The Godfather went into the Oscars anything but a sure bet for Best Picture. Aside from Casablanca and Citizen Kane it is recognized as the greatest American film of all time and in hind sight most people forget that not only was it tied for nominations in 1972, but Coppola lost Best Director.
Because hindsight is anything but 20/20 when popular consensus takes over, the narrative of the Hollywood Renaissance is one of Scorsese, Spielberg and Lucas getting snubbed for Taxi Driver, Jaws, Close Encounters, and Star Wars. But looking at the 1970s and the race for Best Director, what you see instead is two directors fighting it out for director of the decade, each earning three nominations.
Obviously one of them is Francis Ford Coppola. With both Godfathers, The Conversation, and, Apocalypse Now most people would say that he won that fight.

After helping teenagers buy beer in Superbad and getting Seth Rogen to shove his voice into an alien’s body in Paul, Greg Mottola is getting his hands dirty with Aaron Sorkin for The Newsroom over at HBO, and he’s also working on the longest movie title in history for Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman. The writer/director recently described Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry as a “weird Charlie Kaufman experiment,” which sounds great (and means that title will probably have several other titles inside of it). On top of all this, he told Kid In the Front Row that he’s been working with actor Campbell Scott (Roger Dodger, The Amazing Spider-Man) to craft a new script. There were literally no details beyond that, but it’s still exciting to see two excellent storytellers team up. Plus...

If you feel like you haven't heard anything in a while from "Superbad," "Adventureland" and "Paul" director Greg Mottola, you have no need to worry. He's been very busy, working on the forthcoming Aaron Sorkin-scripted HBO show "The Newsroom."
To refresh your memory, the show features a ridiculously stacked cast -- Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski and Sam Waterston -- in the story set in a cable news room, following the exploits of an anchor (Daniels), his new executive producer (Mortimer), his newsroom staff and their boss (Waterston) as they set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to report the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles, and their own personal entanglements. It sounds fantastic. There was been little word on what his next feature film effort might be, but Mottola recently gave a little hint.

William Powell, Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow, Spencer Tracy in Jack Conway's Libeled Lady Turner Classic Movies' Jean Harlow film series continues this evening with four of Harlow's MGM vehicles — Bombshell, Personal Property, Reckless, and Libeled Lady — and one supporting appearance in Warner Bros.' The Public Enemy. Harlow really doesn't have much to do in The Public Enemy (1931). She looks about as out of place in this otherwise solid William A. Wellman crime drama as she is in Frank Capra's melodrama Platinum Blonde, released that same year. James Cagney, however, looks anything but out of place as a sociopathic gangster. Cagney, in fact, was so right for that particular role that early on in the production he exchanged gangsters with fellow player Edward Woods. In Victor Fleming's Bombshell, Harlow, known as the Blonde Bombshell, stars in a send-up of her own Hollywood stardom (and Clara Bow's as well). Personally,...

In March of last year, Natalie Portman was attached to - brace yourself - Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry, a movie adaptation of Leanne Shapton's book. Brad Pitt was set to co-star.
Then, it just sat there. For a year. Now there's finally some movement, with Risky Business Blog revealing that Greg Mottola (Superbad and Adventureland) will write the adaptation Important Artifacts and Personal Property, which I think is the longest the movie title goes. Probably, it'll be winnowed to Important Artifacts.
It will be turned into a romantic comedy, and though Pitt and Portman don't play in that league, both have pretty good comedic chops, and if it's along the lines of Adventureland in terms of tone (but hopefully a more compelling story). However, it sounds like there will be some work to...

Greg Mottola is writing an adaptation of “Important Artifacts” for Paramount Pictures to star Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman.
The novel, actually titled “Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry,” is a fake auction catalog that chronicles the rise and fall of a four-year relationship. It’s essentially 325 pages of email, notes, pictures, and heirlooms that Mottola will weave into the script, according to THR’s Risky Business blog.
Portman and Pitt, rumored to be attached to this since March 2009, will obviously play the couple.
This is good news for fans of quirky romantic comedies because Mottola wrote and directed the coming-of-age story Adventureland and directed the hilarious comedy Superbad. While we don’t know how much of the book he’ll incorporate, I imagine it will have a sort of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...

Sam Jackson Not in Thor: This is only a bit of clearing up as I thought Samuel L. Jackson was reprising his role as Nick Fury in all of the Marvel based films surrounding the anticipated The Avengers film to be directed by Joss Whedon, but apparently that's not the case. Jackson was quoted in an interview saying, "I'm not in Thor. Supposed to do Captain America this summer in London." As far as why he's not in Thor, he adds, "I thought I was, they said I was in the trades and I was like, 'Ooh! I got a job!' I called my agent he said, 'Naw, you're not in it.' I was like, 'Well sh*t, they need to pay me if they're gonna put my name in it. Somethin'.'" Jackson will next be seen as Nick Fury in Iron Man 2 on May 7. [Latino Review]

0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Awhile back, Paramount purchased the rights to Leanne Shapton's rather cumbersomely-titled book, "Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry." Not exactly the kind of title that really leaps off a movie poster, right? Thankfully, it would appear that the names Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman - which do, in fact, leap off movie posters - should help draw audiences to the eventual adaptation.
According to Risky Business, the studio is not only eyeing the two A-list stars for the project, but has hired writer-director Greg Mottola (Adventureland, Superbad) to handle the translation. Mottola is tasked with adapting the novel into a workable screenplay, but the article fails to mention whether he'll direct the film, as well. The article describes the book, saying:

I really liked Adventureland when I first saw it at Sundance. Then I bought it on Blu-Ray and realized the film was a test of one man's patience. The film didn't hold up for me even though I'm a fan of both 80's music and amusement parks.THR has news on Greg's upcoming project: “Adventureland” writer-director Greg Mottola has been hired by Paramount to write the screenplay for its adaptation of “Important Artifacts.” A little over a year ago, the studio won an auction for the rights to Leanne Shapton’s book — full title: “Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry” — which Farrar Straus & Giroux had just published. Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman quickly became attached to star in what Mottola will spin into a romantic comedy. The stars are also producing through their respective banners, Plan B and Handsomecharlie Films.

Hollywood can find a rom-com anywhere these days, as indicated by the hot trend to adapt non-fiction guidebooks into fictional features. Now, Paramount is seeming to make a movie out of an auction catalog. But author Leanne Shapton has given them a slightly easier task with this idea, because her book Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry is already a work of fiction merely disguised as an auction catalog. According to Risky Biz, the studio has tapped Greg Mottola (director of Superbad, writer/director of Adventureland), to figure out how to adapt the story, which is told in the form of photos, ticket stubs, mix tapes and other mementos, along with their corresponding auction listing details.

Despite the irresistible and bizarre pairing of Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman in the lead roles, Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Dooland and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry will be a tough sell as a movie. It's based on a book that's structured as a Sotheby's auction catalog, listing the items that the main couple (Portman and Pitt, of course) accumulated over the course of their four-year relationship. But who better to take on the adaptation than Greg Mottola? The Adventureland writer-director is wrapping up post-production on his next film Paul, and THR reports that next he'll tackle writing the Important Artifacts screenplay for Paramount. Mottola will apparently be structuring the film as a romantic comedy, and despite the fact that it ends with the breakup of the main couple, you can totally see how that will work. The man who brought us nerdy teen comedies in the form of Superbad and Adventureland has been signed by Paramount Pictures to write and direct the big screen adaptation of Leanne Shapton's book, (deep breath) Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry. What's more, Greg Mottola will be directing none other than Brad Pitt and the lovely Natalie Portman in the romantic comedy.
If you haven't heard about this book yet then now's your chance to become acquainted: it's a highly inventive premise that uses the format of an auction catalogue to lay out the story of a couple's relationship and its eventual demise. Greg Mottola will write the adaptation of "Important Artifacts" for Paramount Pictures. Just over a year ago, Paramount won an auction for the rights to Leanne Shapton’s book called “Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry” which was published by Farrar Straus & Giroux. Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman quickly became attached to star in what will be made into a romantic comedy. Pitt and Portman are also producing via Plan B and Handsomecharlie Films. Shapton, an art director at the New York Times, created a fictional estate auction catalog which was full of personal items and photographs from the four-year-long romance between a younger food columnist and a male photographer. Mottola also helmed “Superbad” and “The Daytrippers" and is currently in post-production phase for “Paul." That comedy is stars and is written by Nick Frost and...

Whew! Natalie Portman and Brad Pitt have been attached to star in and produce this estate-auction-catalog-turned-romantic-comedy through their production banners Handsomecharlie Films and Plan B. Now Risky Biz says Paramount has hired Adventureland writer/director Greg Mottola to write the script for this surprisingly interesting film. The story follows a four year romance between Morris, a male photographer, and Doolan, a younger food columnist, whose personal items and photographs are the subject of the book which acts as a fictional estate auction catalog which reveals many of the memorable moments they shared in love. Paramount Pictures has signed Superbad/Adventureland director Greg Mottola to direct a big screen adaptation of Leanne Shapton’s book Important Artifacts and Personal Property From the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry, which the studio acquired last year. That's not all -- Risky Business reports that Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman are attached to the project, which Mottola hopes to spin into a romantic comedy. So what is it about? Here is the description from the book cover: "Auction catalogs can tell you a lot about a person—their passions and vanities, peccadilloes and aesthetics; their flush years and lean. Think of the collections of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Truman Capote, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In Leanne Shapton’s marvelously inventive and invented auction catalog, the 325 lots up for auction are what remain from the relationship between Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris...
