No matter what they call them, it's still a den of ill-repute.

What does a rich girl do when she finds out she's no longer rich? Become a companion for men who are still rich, that's what. Earlier pre-code films like "Dance Fool Dance" and "Faithless" showed young party girls Joan Crawford and Tallulah Bankhead in similar situations, and usually it ended up with them walking the streets or ending up in back street affairs. At least those two films had the benefit of major leading ladies and a major studio (MGM) behind the gloss in both cases. But this RKO Radio film falls very much on the "B" level and features mainly unpleasant characters who don't really warrant the sympathy to care about. In the case of the "heroine" here, it's forgotten leading lady Adrienne Ames who loses her silver spoon born meal ticket, and the way she goes about trying to retain her status in the world of society doesn't make her an endearing leading character.

The leading men aren't so likable for the most part, either, with Ralph Bellamy a bit of a bellowing brute as a clip joint owner who sees an opportunity to bring in a touch of class when Ames approaches him with a job. Bellamy decides to hire some male and female companions for lonely society women and men ("gigolos and gigolettes") to bring in a more sophisticated new clientele with Ames as his prize gigolette. Young playboy Donald Cook falls hard for Ames, but the usual parental disapproval follows because of Ames' dissipated fortune. Robert Armstrong is present as a tough talking customer who creates trouble. It's obvious that this was filmed on abandoned night club sets used for Fred and Ginger musicals, but without the sophistication in the script which seems jumbled and rushed to fulfill their B quota quickie market. There's even an overhead shot musical number, but it lacks the panache of other musicals at the time, making this quite easily forgettable.
