This is a tale of chance encounters.1) René Clair is in London, making The Ghost Goes West (1935). Something of a flaneur, he has strolled down to the East End, and his noctivagation leads him to a Limehouse pub which strikes him with an intense but mysterious feeling of déjà vu."Of course!" he suddenly thinks. "D.W. Griffith: Broken Blossoms!" The pub is the very image of Griffith's Hollywood recreation of Victorian London from his 1919 film.And there, at the bar, sits D.W. Griffith himself. John Kerr dead at 81: actor who played suspected gay teenager in the play Tea and Sympathy and in the Hollywood movie adaptation Kerr, best known for playing the sensitive (and suspected to be gay) adolescent opposite Deborah Kerr (no relation, different pronunciation -- see below) in Tea and Sympathy both on Broadway and in the movies, died of heart failure at Huntington Hospital in the Los Angeles "suburb" of Pasadena this past Saturday, February 1. Seven years ago, French animator Sylvain Chomet made a pleasing intervention into the world of bland, airbrushed, computer-animated American movies with his delightful Belleville Rendezvous (aka Les Triplettes de Belleville). A crucial element in his wildly inventive film was the Tour de France, and Chomet wanted to include a clip featuring the cycling postman from his great hero Jacques Tati's Jour de fête. He wrote to the director's daughter, Sophie Tatischeff, seeking permission, and she was so impressed she not only gave him the go-ahead but also drew his attention to an unfilmed screenplay her father had written in the late 1950s. Filed in the archives as "Film Tati No 4", it was dedicated to her. Tati had abandoned what has now become The Illusionist as being too serious and personal, embarking instead on the extravagant Playtime,...

Interviewing Peter Bogdanovich for the April 2002 issue of Venice Magazine was a thrill for me. Like Francis Coppola, John Frankenheimer, and William Friedkin before him, Bogdanovich was one of those filmmakers whose one-sheets hung on my bedroom walls growing up. Plus the fact that he himself had a renowned career as a film historian and interviewer of his own childhood heroes, such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, Orson Welles, and dozens of others, made our talk a real feast.
Not long after the article was printed, I received a letter with a New York City postmark. The note enclosed said simply: “Dear Alex, thanks for doing your homework so well, and thanks for the good vibes. All the best to you of love and luck, Peter Bogdanovich.”
Our chat remains one of my favorites during my 15 year tenure as a film writer. --A.S.
