Wow... I don't even know where to begin with this film. I can't believe how beautifully it was directed and how much emotion it stirred up inside me. The film was so touching and really gave me a fuzzy nostalgic feeling that only a few movies have ever given me. The film resolves as a painting that is peacefully moving and revealing an exceptional and truly touching story.
The film genuinely breaks the boundaries of silent film. This is probably one of my favorite silent films and was probably one of the most deep and sensual silent films I have ever seen. Watching the film with or without the music makes no difference in revealing the true beauty it possesses and is trying reveal. I watched it once with the music and once without it and was impacted in similar ways, both times.
The film guides the viewer to a world that only Ozu can create with his exceptional talent of recreating originality and the feeling of warmth that came from this time period. It is a splendid examination of history and a tale of true family and relationship development.
