- [Berry enters room]
- Jennifer Rarick: Berry!
- Berry Rhodes: So you would hold out on me, wouldn't you?
- Jennifer Rarick: Get out of here. Can't you see I'm not dressed?
- Berry Rhodes: That's all right. I don't mind. Not bad either, if I do say so.
- Jennifer Rarick: Have you gone mad?
- Berry Rhodes: Something's come over me. Maybe that's it.
- [sounds of door locking]
- Jennifer Rarick: Berry...
- [Berry laughs]
- Berry Rhodes: That's how I like to see you... all shaky... instead of that devilish look you usually have.
- Jennifer Rarick: I'm not shaking.
- Berry Rhodes: Says she - her knees knocking.
- Jennifer Rarick: They're not knocking.
- Berry Rhodes: They're adorable knees, Jenny.
- Jennifer Rarick: What if somebody came in here?
- Berry Rhodes: Not a chance... they're all dressing. They'll be busy for hours.
- Jennifer Rarick: Berry, please go.
- Berry Rhodes: All right... I'll go. I'll go... whenever you say.
- [they kiss]
- Berry Rhodes: Want me to go now?
- [long pause]
- Jennifer Rarick: Yes...
- Berry Rhodes: Liar...
- Berry Rhodes: What kind of woman are you to make a man forget his fiancée?
- Jennifer Rarick: What kind of man are you to make a woman forget a man's fiancée?
- John Rarick: [overheard from corridor] If I give you this money, what assurance have I that you'll keep your word?
- Jennifer Rarick: [overheard from corridor] You give me one hundred thousand now, and the rest when I get the divorce. I'll take *your* word, Mr. Rarick.
- John Rarick: I've dealt with a lot of merchandise - this is the first time I've bought a husband.
- Jennifer Rarick: And it's the first time I've ever sold one.
- [Jennifer enters and grabs the check]
- Jennifer Rarick: No you don't. You're not selling any husband to me!
- Muriel Preston: You want Berry, don't you?
- Jennifer Rarick: Not this way, no! I've tried it once, but I'm not trying to buy Berry again. He's not for sale.
- Muriel Preston: Oh... well I won't divorce him.
- Jennifer Rarick: You think I'm afraid of a scandal... Well I'm not!
- John Rarick: Jennifer!
- Jennifer Rarick: [to her father] I love Berry. He's all that matters to me...
- Jennifer Rarick: [turns back to Muriel] ... And you can't make me lose him again.
- Muriel Preston: [chuckles] Lose him. That's a little far fetched, isn't it? He's hardly yours to lose.
- Jennifer Rarick: Isn't he. He loves me. You *know* he loves me. No matter what you think, he's been fair to you. I've told Berry that I wouldn't see him again until you talked things fairly and gave him up. But I won't bother to be fair any longer.
- Muriel Preston: You're very foolish, my dear. Goodbye, Mr. Rarick. Perhaps you can make Jennifer realize that the only permanent hold on a man like Berry is a wedding ring.
- Jennifer Rarick: Is it? That's how well you know Berry!
- Muriel Preston: I know men, my dear, and Berry is no different from the rest.
- Mr. Brooks: Is it your opinion that great wealth has a demoralizing influence on the family?
- Mr. Brooks: Demoralizing? Family? Oh, what nonsense. Take my son, for instance, he's exactly the same as I was at his age. Studious. Attentive to his business. My daughter, democratic, totally unspoiled. My wife, same sweet small town girl that she always was. Unselfish. Loyal to a fault almost. Oh, she's exactly the same today as she was then! Same loyalty, same regard for my welfare. Why, she's wrapped up in family and the children.
- Berry Rhodes: Here, let's get out of this before she gets suspicious and comes around.
- Jennifer Rarick: Well, where would we go?
- Berry Rhodes: I know the very place! It's really just around the corner and it will only take us a moment to get there. The most marvelous music and wine that's guaranteed to make you...
- Jennifer Rarick: Yes?
- Berry Rhodes: Well, it will make you.
- Jennifer Rarick: Well, I guess I'll be running along.
- Berry Rhodes: Well, I'll come with you.
- Jennifer Rarick: Oh, don't bother. Thanks for the cocktail.
- Berry Rhodes: I'm just the same old Berry Rhodes again. A scoundrel among men and a rotter with women.
- Leslie: [at the swimming pool] Hello, Rarick! Good to see you. I can't shake hands with you, I'm all dripping.
- [to Berry and Muriel]
- Leslie: So, you know Jennifer Rarick, don't you? She's a new patron at my home for wayward girls.
- Muriel Preston: Oh, really, how interesting. Come on, Berry, let's go for a swim.
- Berry Rhodes: Could I get a room there?
- Muriel Preston: Just a minute, you don't seem to realize that Berry is engaged to me, Miss Rarick.
- Jennifer Rarick: Is he?
- Muriel Preston: Yes. And in our set it isn't very sporty to play around with a man who belongs to someone else. Of course, you wouldn't be expected to know that. You don't like to hear the truth, do you? Just because you bought yourself into a weekend, doesn't mean that you belong. Berry may step outside his own class, to play around. But, that's all it means.
- Berry Rhodes: There's somebody here, isn't there?
- Jennifer Rarick: Well, there must be!
- Berry Rhodes: If there isn't, we're in a pickle!
- Jennifer Rarick: [returning from dressing] Thanks Berry. Now I know you love me.
- Berry Rhodes: You're talking out of turn, young lady.
- Jennifer Rarick: I only thought so before, but now I know it... I'm terribly glad.
- Berry Rhodes: Do you wanna be spanked?
- Jennifer Rarick: Look at me, darling.
- Berry Rhodes: I'll do no such thing.
- Jennifer Rarick: Deny it if you can...
- Berry Rhodes: I'm gonna get out of here before I'm *attacked*...
- Jennifer Rarick: Berry...
- Berry Rhodes: Little devil. You made me fall in love with you.
- Reporter on Train: Will you remain in the five and ten cent store business, Mr. Rarick?
- John Rarick: Ha-ha. Well, I see no reason why I shouldn't. The business has been very profitable, so far. Of course, later on I may expand and put in a higher grade of merchandise. In that case, we'll charge fifteen cents. Ha-ha.
- Berry Rhodes: Here, are you one of those women who fire a man with ambition?
- Jennifer Rarick: Of course, I am.
- Berry Rhodes: Then you and I, quit right now.
- Jennifer Rarick: Yeah?
- Berry Rhodes: Oh yes, there's much too much fun in life to take these things seriously. Besides, one must have time for polo and, eh...
- Jennifer Rarick: Women?
- Berry Rhodes: Women! Yes, women take a little time too. By the way, Rarick, how would you like to share a small part of my working hours?
- Jennifer Rarick: Not interested in part time boys.
- Berry Rhodes: Ah, dear, dear, I was afraid of that.
- Jennifer Rarick: I've got to have all - or nothing!
- Berry Rhodes: I want to be myself for a bit. Couldn't you make use of an excellent rotter?
- Jennifer Rarick: Why, I've been looking all over for an excellent rotter.
- Berry Rhodes: Don't. Don't encourage me girl. It's hard enough now to stick to these things. My self-control positively amazes me.
- Jennifer Rarick: It amazes me too - Berry.
- Berry Rhodes: Look here, do you want to get out of her a respectable woman? I'm at the breaking point now. Look at my hand.
- [Shaking]
- Berry Rhodes: Look at it.
- Jennifer Rarick: Oh, but, its such a nice hand.
- Berry Rhodes: Rarick, girl, you're about to be kissed.
- Jennifer Rarick: Oh, I'm shaking.
- [kiss]
- Berry Rhodes: [hugging Jennifer] Well, if I must be a hero, give me a little help, will you. Take some of these arms away from me. For heaven's sake, put some clothes on, I won't look. Well, this is a nice state of affairs. First of all you make me into a laborer and then you turn me into a gentleman. If this gets out, my reputations ruined.
- Berry Rhodes: Has it ever occurred to you that the buffalo is practically extinct on Manhattan island?
- Jennifer Rarick: And the common titmouse, if allowed to multiply, could in no time obliterate the entire earth.
- Berry Rhodes: How true.
- Berry Rhodes: I'm not supposed to sleep in a case like this.
- Jennifer Rarick: No?
- Berry Rhodes: Oh, dear me, no. No, no. No! The gentleman on these occasions always sits by the bedside, to keep those coyotes away.
- Jennifer Rarick: Good night.
- Berry Rhodes: I bet you do some fancy snoring.
- Jennifer Rarick: I've never had any complaints.
