Among the orange trees of Southern California, a replica of the great African Diamond Mines was built for this film. An entire hillside was dug out and great derricks erected for the scene in which the discovery of a great diamond is shown.
According to press articles (The Reading Times, Reading Pa.) the initial release of this film included a specially programmed Our Gang comedy "Spook Spoofers" (sic) and was tied into an "Our Gang Audition Contest" where Hal Roach would whittle down contestants and the final winner would be in an upcoming Our Gang film. Other shorts playing with this same film were an MGM Oddity "Golden Fleece" and an MGM Newsreel.
According to an item in The California Eagle (March 23, 1928), 120 African American extras worked on this film in at least one sequence.
