Mrs. Belloc Lowndes wrote "The Lodger" as a short story and then expanded it to a novel, which was dramatized in the following films:

The Lodger (1927). Alfred Hitchcock's first thriller; and the only silent film of the story. Stars Ivor Novello.

The Lodger (1932). Novello reprises his role as the mysterious lodger. Directed by Maurice Elvey.

The Lodger (1944). Laird Cregar plays the title role. Also stars Merle Oberon, George Sanders, Cedric Hardwicke and Sara Allgood. John Brahm directed.

Man in the Attic (1953). Jack Palance is the lodger. With Frances Bavier, best known as Aunt Bee from "The Andy Griffith Show." Hugo Fregonese directed.

The Lodger (2008). David Ondaatje wrote and directed.

Why is the print so bad?

This film is in the public domain, which means that anyone can legally distribute a video copy without paying royalties. Only a few will take the trouble to find a good print or spend money improving the one they have. You may find the film on any number of cheaply-priced discs. Finding a copy with good picture and sound is another matter. Shop around.

Why is the music so bad?

The Lodger (1927) has no music score. It's a silent film. The music you're hearing was added by its distributor. The quality of the music in DVDs of silent movies varies from distributor to distributor. Some record original scores, some carefully piece together a score from public domain sources and some slap on an irrelevant soundtrack. This film does have good distributors that use good music scores. Shop around.
