Other than a chance to see Bela Lugosi playing an American Indian, there's not much reason to see this...

Wow...this is an amazingly dull film! While I adore silent films and really looked forward to seeing Bela Lugosi in one of his earliest roles, there really isn't much reason to see this film. After all, this German-made film has Lugosi playing the character Chincochgook--a Mohican Indian!!! Now this IS worth seeing--but not for good reason! After all, for film fans, it might be a treat seeing this master of horror playing in dark, dark makeup! Aside from being dull, the biggest problem with the film is the style in which it was told. Instead of just being a straight retelling of the Cooper classic, the film has a prologue in which a modern guy is telling stories and he basically says he's summarizing a portion of the Deerslayer's life--sort of like a recollection versus a verbatim retelling. As a result, the film misses a lot from the original story and just never catches your attention. Plus, there are so many better versions out there!
