The Woman in Black
Written by Nigel Kneale, based on a novel by Susan Hill
Directed by Herbert Wise
Aired on ITV on December 24, 1989
My first memories of Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black were not from the long-running stage play nor the recent film starring Daniel Radcliffe. Instead, my first memories of the classic ghost story were through the TV spots for the UK adaptation that were so chilling, they caused many sleepless nights. 23 years later, it is now time to lay those ghosts to rest.
First broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1989, though rarely repeated since, The Woman in Black stars Adrian Rawlins as Arthur Kidd (the name was changed from Kipps for the adaptation), a young lawyer who is sent to the small town of Crythin Gifford to overlook the sale of Eel Marsh House after the recent death of its owner, Mrs. Drablow. Upon arriving in Crythin...

With Ethan Hawke most recently delivering a laudable performance in the terrifying box office hit Sinister, due to hit UK DVD and Blu-ray on 11 February through Momentum Pictures, we decided to take a look back at some other Hollywood notables who made their mark on the genre with style. Aaaaand Action!
Danny Glover – Saw (2004)
Perhaps best known as Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon films, Danny Glover also has a long history of roles in smaller independent films. So it was perhaps not surprising when he turned up as obsessive Detective Tapp in low-budget horror Saw. Glover shot his scenes in two days, and the film went on to spawn one of the biggest horror franchises of all time.
Kevin Bacon – Friday the 13th (1980)

The Woman In Black (2012) Former “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe, looking convincingly older than his 22 years, stars in James Watkins’ old-fashioned horror tale “The Woman in Black”. The young lad plays Arthur Kipps, a lawyer and widowed father to a young boy. Arthur is still grieving the death of his wife, when he’s sent to a creepy old village in the boondocks, where he must settle a creepy old mansion for auction. Immediately upon arrival, Arthur is subjected to creepy stares by the village’s uber creepy residences, who fears that the city slicker’s presence may unsettle an old legend involving a ghostly woman in black, whose every appearance signals the violent death of a village child. No sooner does Arthur settle into the creepy old mansion just outside the village do violent deaths begin befalling the village’s children. So, uh, I guess the legend is true after all.

Yesterday we heard from screen-writing legend Jane Goldman and Director James Watkins and today we hear from the main man himself, Daniel Radcliffe who talks about what it was like playing the lead role of Arthur Kipps. He talksa bout how he got the role and why he wanted to take it on so soon after Harry Potter was all finished.

Ever since news broke that Hammer was planning a sequel to the surprise hit "The Woman in Black," the question on every young Potter fan's lips was "But will Daniel Radcliffe be back?"
Spoilers ahead.
The big looming problem with any potential reprise by Arthur Kipps, Radcliffe's character in the first film, is that he died and apparently moved onto the afterlife with his son and wife. Then considering that the plot of the second film, "Angelof Death," will take place 40 years after the events of the original, a Radcliffe cameo seemed less and less likely.
But new details from Hammer's CEO hint that an appearance is not out of the realm of possibilities. Learn more after the jump!
At a special screening for "Woman in Black," Hammer CEO Simon Oakes spoke about the sequel, according to Bleeding Cool. Oakes would not offer too many details up on "Angel of Death,...

The Woman in Black; Carnage; Safe House; House of Tolerance
After scaring the jeepers out of parents who couldn't believe their Harry Potter-loving offspring were allowed to watch this kind of thing, The Woman in Black (2012, Momentum, 12) ships up on DVD in the same slightly trimmed version that avoided a 15 certificate through judicious shortening. Having co-written the supremely nasty My Little Eye and gone for the jugular in the viscerally satirical Eden Lake, director James Watkins here foregrounds atmosphere over shocks, looking toward the templates of The Orphanage and The Others with impressively shiversome results.
Deftly adapted by Kick-Ass screenwriter Jane Goldman from Susan Hill's novel (which itself owed a debt to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House), this gas-lit period creeper sees Daniel Radcliffe's dowdy lawyer Arthur Kipps sent to close the affairs of an abandoned house whose grounds are separated from the world by a foggy causeway.

The Woman In Black
Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Liz White, Janet McTeer | Written by Jane Goldman | Directed by James Watkins
The film adaptation of The Woman In Black is kind of a big deal in little ways. It’s based on a well-known and loved book, which was also the inspiration for one of the longest running plays in the West End. And of course, it’s Daniel Radcliffe’s first film after the end of the Harry Potter series.
As book-to-screen adaptations go, Jane Goldman’s script is possibly one of the most unfaithful I can think of. Not in a bad way though, for the big screen it makes sense to add and change things. The basic ghost story is the same, but it plays out a little differently, and details here and there have been altered. The book and play have a much simpler, very-British ghost story,...

Considering the rather definitive ending of "The Woman in Black," it might come as a surprise to find out that Hammer Films is planning a sequel to their most recent horror film. But the British production company has hired Jon Coker, who worked as story editor on "The Woman in Black," to come in and pen a sequel that takes place after the time of Arthur Kipps.
Yes, that does mean Daniel Radcliffe won't be starring in the new film. In fact, he likely won't even make a cameo, unless the movie's Big Twist is that he is now the Woman in Black (we doubt it). We haven't had many details about the project, but now Shock Till You Drop has gotten their hands on a plot synopsis for the upcoming sequel. Check it out after the jump.

Director: James Watkins. Review: Adam Wing. Based on the classic ghost story by Susan Hill, The Woman In Black sees Daniel Radcliffe make a clean break from all things Hogwarts and Hermione. It tells the tale of Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a young solicitor who is forced to leave his young son (Misha Handley) and travel to a remote village to attend to the affairs of Alice Drablow, the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House. His wife died in childbirth, leaving Arthur alone to raise their child. Though he’s working by himself, Kipps senses that he’s not alone in the mansion, a theory backed up by the sound of footsteps and a mysterious figure big on surprises. The locals clearly don’t want him around – “Don’t go chasing shadows Arthur” – but Kipps is unfazed by the lack of hospitality and starts to uncover the tragic secrets that threaten them all.

The Woman in Black is the first period piece from the re-launched Hammer Films and was generally well received by critics and moviegoers when it was released to theaters in February.
With the film’s recent released to Blu-ray, I wanted to revisit the movie and felt pretty much the same way about it that I did when I saw it in theaters. I’ve included my impressions from the previous review, along with new comments, and details on the Blu-ray extras.
Daniel Radcliffe plays lawyer Arthur Kipps in his first post-Harry Potter role. Arthur’s wife died during child birth and he’s having a tough time coping. With his career on the line, he has one last chance to prove his commitment to his law firm. The task seems simple enough: Arthur has to sort out paperwork from a recently deceased client, but things don’t go as...

From a career standpoint, “The Woman in Black” is a very smart move for Daniel Radcliffe. A straightforward but modestly budgeted and staged genre period piece that neither requires a more difficult test of the “Harry Potter” star’s box office drawing power (as a twee indie flick might) nor requires him to venture too far out of his comfort zone, director James Watkins’ movie is a moderately engaging actor’s showcase. It was also a solid box office hit, pulling in over $125 million, including $70-plus million overseas. If only the isolated village where James Watkins' The Woman In Black is set simply took the time to put up warnings in front of the imposing manor where the titular vengeful spirit dwells, things might have worked out better for everyone involved. Nothing too complicated, a simple "Stay away, ghost within who causes misery, kills children" would have sufficed, non-believers be damned. Unfortunately, as written by Jane Goldman's (X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) script, they're a taciturn bunch straight out of a mid-60's Hammer picture, and they'd rather give a stranger in town like grieving solicitor Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) the stinkeye than give him a clear, reasoned warning about why he needs to stay the hell away from that house. Nevertheless, to the house...

A horror film set in classic tones, with a small English village holding tight to a dark secret, The Woman in Black is one of the best of the genre I have seen in recent years. From the onset, when we see Daniel Radcliffe.s character holding the straight razor to his throat as he looks in the mirror and finishes shaving, the audience knows there is something definitely not right in Arthur Kipps. life. Other clues are given to the audience in small tidbits. Kipps closing his briefcase on papers that have .overdue. stamped on them. Kipps talking to his boss before he takes the trip, and his boss reminding him this is his last chance -...

After several false starts and weak efforts, the much-promised revival of Hammer horror films has finally come to fruition with the release of The Woman in Black, an old-fashioned ghost story that ranks with the finest achievements of the legendary British production company. The story is set in the early 1900s. Daniel Radcliffe gives an excellent performance as Arthur Kipps, a young London-based lawyer who is already a widower, his beloved wife having died while giving birth to their son. Kipps tries his best to juggle being a single parent with the demands of his profession, but his unrelenting grief prevents him from fulfilling his duties at the office. His boss gives him one last chance to redeem himself by sending him to a remote village to investigate a complicated insurance situation relating to a recently deceased person. Arriving in the village, Kipps discovers that the relatively...

The Woman in Black, the British specter that scared up $120 million worldwide this past winter, is set to return in a follow-up to the surprise horror hit, but the leading man, Daniel Radcliffe, probably won't be around for a second encounter.
Hammer, Alliance Films and Cross Creek Pictures, along with Susan Hill, the author of "The Woman in Black" novel, have announced a follow-up called "Angels of Death." The proposed story will take place 40 years after the first film starring Radcliffe, reports the Hollywood Reporter.
Spoilers ahead.
For those of you who saw "The Woman In Black," two problems with this setup should strike you. First of all, setting the film 40 years later would age Radcliffe's character Arthur Kipps beyond the ages the actor could realistically play.
Oh, and there is the small problem that Radcliffe's character dies at the end of "The Woman in Black." You'd have to imagine...

The Woman in Black was a big win for Hammer and it has been announced that they are working with the book’s author on a sequel. Titled The Woman in Black: Angels of Death, the new story is said to “focus on a couple and the experience they have when they encounter the same eerie house.”
Jon Croker was the story editor on the first movie and has been hired as the screenwriter for the sequel. While this announcement signals that development of the sequel is moving forward, it isn’t far enough along where a director or actors have signed on. We’re assuming that there would be interest to bring back at least some of the supporting cast, as the film will take place in the same town.

Daniel Radcliffe’s first film after his breakout role as Harry Potter, The Woman in Black is a departure from the children’s fantasy but still has lots of the supernatural.
In the horror movie, Radcliffe, barely looking old enough for the stubble on his chin, plays Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer and widower who’s assigned to investigate the will of a woman who owns an old English manor. When he travels to the remote village where the woman lived, Kipps is not welcomed by the locals, who warn him to stay away from the manor. He doesn’t, however, with threats that if he returns to London without the information he needs, he might lose his job. Soon after he’s in the manor, he starts seeing an eery woman...

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are rich enough to never work again – but who has the talent and ambition for adult success?
Three weeks after its release, The Woman in Black has claimed a remarkable achievement: it is by some distance the most successful homegrown horror film ever released in Britain.
Equally significantly, perhaps, it marks the transition of the Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe – playing the lead role of widowed solicitor Arthur Kipps – from one of the most successful, well paid child stars of all time to something approaching a grown-up acting career.
For all the fame and money the bespectacled Hogwarts schoolboy has brought Radcliffe over the eight-film franchise, he could provide a straitjacket for the 22-year-old actor. Radcliffe's Potter co-stars, Emma Watson, 21, and Rupert Grint, 23, face a near-identical dilemma. All three spent their teenage years in front of the cameras, becoming solidly identified with a single character.

There’s nothing quite like an eerie, old-fashioned ghost tale – the mystery behind the haunting that envelops you, the charming haunted old house, the townsfolk who dare not utter a word out loud about the horror and of course, the unsettling ghostly reveals. Make no mistake, The Woman In Black is a fine example of the very effective and engaging ghost tale I’ve just described and one that will have you looking over your shoulder long after the credits has rolled.
Based on the novel of the same name by Susan Hill, The Woman In Black follows young solicitor Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), who is coping with the loss of his wife after she gave birth to their son Joseph (Misha Handley) four years ago.

Harry Potter and the Spooky Old House? Not quite.
Edwardian solicitor Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) is sent from London to a Norfolk hamlet to sort out the papers of a recently deceased old lady. Alice Drablow lived alone in the darkly imposing Eel Marsh House, cut off from the rest of the world twice a day when tides cover the causeway leading to it. Bentley, the local agent retained by Arthur's employer, tries to force him to leave the very day he arrives, with only a tiny packet of papers representing Mrs Drablow's legal effects. Arthur, though, is determined to carry out his...

Originally published in 1982, Susan Hill's ghost story has been adapted for radio and TV, and a stage version has been running for more than 20 years in London's West End. Like Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, Hill's story is part of a succession of supernatural yarns planned to be told around the fireside at Christmas, but the narrator considers it too terrifying for the festive season and writes it down to be kept for a more fitting occasion. Jane Goldman's screen adaptation for the revived (or disinterred) Hammer studio has dispensed with this framing device. Instead, the young Edwardian hero, an inexperienced London solicitor, is dispatched right at the start to a flat, swampy coastal area of the Midlands to settle the affairs of a recently deceased widow, Mrs Drablow. For some reason he's called Arthur Kipps after the draper's assistant in Hg Wells's Edwardian novel Kipps,...

The story follows Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) as a widowed lawyer and now single father who is struggling both with the death of his wife and financially, now on his last chance with the law firm he represents Kipps is sent to represent the affairs of a recently deceased eccentric woman in a small village. When he arrives he finds that not all is what it seems and the locals are terrorized by something and holding onto a dark secret, soon he learns the house of his dead client is haunted by a vengeful spirit who is lost looking for someone or something and that no one in the village not even the children are safe from her. I consider it a tremendous mark in favor of The Woman in Black that not once during its running time did I think, Hey, wait, wouldn’t Harry Potter have a spell to deal with this? Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) may be of too-tender years to be portraying even a young attorney, and certainly one who is already a widower and father to a small son, but that’s not so much a problem here. More of an issue is that his Arthur Kipps spends too damn much time lawyering... or, well, doing paperwork, anyway. He’s been sent from London to a tiny village in coastal England at the turn of the 20th century to close out the estate of an elderly, deceased client, only to discover that the townsfolk are terrified of him and are desperate for him to leave. Are they afraid...

Victorian was a transitional age between classical romance and practical industry. It eventually gave way to economic upheaval in the Edwardian era, when Gothic mystery became less important than socialism. Clothing too was on the cusp of change. Frock coats and heavy lace dresses would soon be lost to ceremony, imbuing them with a theatricality that performs especially well in the horror genre.

"What's been amazing is that people who aren't natural Harry Potter fans, have been really sceptical, gone in ready to hate it, and they've come back saying 'oh my god, Daniel Radcliffe, that was a revelation.'"
Woman in Black director James Watkins is reflecting on his strange duty of escorting the world's most bankable youthful actor out of his childhood cloak and into the adult world of film-making. Was this a double-edged sword of expectation that could have gone horribly wrong?
"You have to go into it with your eyes open," he agrees. "Certain people will have preconceptions and misconceptions of Dan, but we had the advantage of meeting him, evaluating him.
"It would have been insane just to cast him on the strength of his fame, but it was clear he had a strong sense of what the character was and a real dedication to the craft. And he worked incredibly hard.

The Woman in Black is the first period piece from the re-launched Hammer Films. Since news of the project first broke, I’ve been wondering if this film was designed for Hammer Horror fans or the Harry Potter crowd.
Thankfully, The Woman in Black is a solid film that is well shot, well acted, and delivers enough scares to keep the average moviegoer entertained. While the movie delivers on its promise to tell a classical ghost story, it misses its chance for greatness by not having a standout scene or scare.
Daniel Radcliffe plays lawyer Arthur Kipps in his first post-Harry Potter role. Arthur’s wife died during child birth and he’s having a tough time coping. With his career on the line, he has one last chance to prove his commitment to his law firm. The task seems simple enough: Arthur has to sort out paperwork from a recently deceased client,...

Momentum Pictures and Hammer Films are set to unleash the creepy The Woman In Black, which stars Daniel Radcliffe as solicitor Arthur Kipps, alongside Janet McTeer, Ciaran Hinds and Lucy May Barker, across the UK on February 10th and to celebrate the release we have some cool merchandise, including a t-shirt, mug and keyring to giveaway!
Arthur Kipps is an up-and-coming young solicitor who has come north to attend the funeral and settle the estate of Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. The routine formalities he anticipates give way to a tumble of events and secrets more sinister and terrifying than any nightmare: the rocking chair in the nursery of the deserted Eel Marsh House, the eerie sound of pony and trap, a child’s scream in the fog, and, most dreadfully, and for Kipps most tragically, the woman in black.

"The Woman in Black" is more than just a horror film that brings a ghostly chill into February. It marks a big revival for Hammer Films, as well as Daniel Radcliffe's first post-"Harry Potter" movie. The flick had a big opening weekend and hopefully, once word starts spreading, will continue to draw more audiences who want to find out the secret of the woman in black. The thrills and reveals were certainly enough to make us jump out of our seats many times.
So without further ado, here are five reasons you should go see "The Woman in Black" if you haven't already.
Scares
First and foremost, "The Woman in Black" is scary. It's the type of horror film that builds and builds and builds suspense for much of the flick until it finally pays off in the second half of the movie, and that suspense is orchestrated very well.

The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, doesn’t try to break any molds in the horror genre. The ghostly tale is one that you have seen play out time-and-time again in film, or just about every fourth week on the CW’s Supernatural. However, The Woman in Black does manage to carve out its own space thanks to the acting talent. Following up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Daniel Radcliffe breaks out of his schoolboy type to mesmerize you with a few strong scenes performed without dialogue. Ciarán Hinds also lends his talent to the minimalist dialogue, making this a solid horror tale, despite its lack of novelty.
The film opens on three girls in an attic playing with their dolls and toy tea set. Horror movies that don’t employ teens with bad acting usually focus on children so that more seasoned actors can play opposite.

The Woman in Black has haunted readers, theatregoers and now a cinema audience. Here author Susan Hill reveals how her chilling ghost story was born, and screenwriter Jane Goldman tells how she brought it to life for the screen
You might think Daniel Radcliffe, post-Harry Potter, would not scare easily but that would be to underestimate The Woman in Black. She is a veteran in the scare stakes, having been spooking audiences for almost 30 years – first, in Susan Hill's accomplished, flesh-creeping novel and then as an indestructible force on the West End stage.
It might seem surprising the story has not been made into a film before. But there is a reason for this: it is devilishly hard to adapt. Since 1997 there have been several attempts at a screenplay but it has had to wait for Jane Goldman to crack it. A journalist, TV presenter and bestselling author (Dreamworld,...

No one expected the former boy wizard to make a horror film – least of all Radcliffe himself. So why is his first post-Potter movie a classic chiller?
It's a bright but windy autumn day on the south-eastern edge of England. A 1913 Rolls-Royce is carefully puttering along a twisty, 1.4km causeway that threads its way through a tidal salt marsh, the North Sea lapping all around.
Out here in darkest Essex, a 380-acre lump of land lurks offshore. This is Osea Island, or Hms Osea as it was known during the first world war, when it was a base for the construction of torpedo boats. It's the perfectly haunting setting for Eel Marsh House, where much of the film The Woman in Black is being shot.
