Happy Friday friends! It’s not only the end of the week, but the beginning of the month of October as well, so obviously it’s time for a new set of Academy Award predictions. It’ll be an interesting new set as well, considering the things that I’ve seen since last time. Honestly, with Miles Ahead debuting tomorrow at the New York Film Festival, the list of unseen titles is shrinking by the day. As such, there’s hopefully a bit of clarity in the race, while also suggesting which categories will be the stronger ones this year and which ones will be the weaker ones (in fact, look for a piece on that next week). Right now though, I’ll give you a quick preview and then dive right into these Oscar predictions! The big things to keep in mind with this Academy Award nominations update is...

The New York Film Festival just gave us one more precious piece of the Oscar puzzle this past weekend in Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies." While it wasn't a critics' darling akin to Spielberg's last film "Lincoln" (another Nyff premiere), it still seems like a pretty safe bet to be a considerable player in this year's race. Indiewire's Eric Kohn called it "a smart, enjoyable Cold War espionage tale" superior to many of Spielberg's recent Oscar-nominated works (remember that even "War Horse" got nominated for best picture), so unless it bombs at the box office or the year's remaining question marks all hit it out of the park, Spielberg's "Bridge" doesn't look like it will have trouble staying in the Oscar race. And now we wait. Not until next month's AFI Fest (where "American Sniper" and "Selma" jumped into the race last year) — which brings us...

An autopsy by the forensic neuropathologist of Pittsburgh Steelers American football player Mike Webster led to the discovery of a football-related brain trauma.
Giannina Scott, David Wolthoff, Larry Shuman and Elizabeth Cantillon also produce. Sony will release the film in North America on December 25.
As previously announced, the world premieres of By The Sea and The Big Short bookend the festival, set to run in Los Angeles from November 5-12.

Now that we’re well into the month of September, it’s time to kick predictions into high gear. It’ll be twice a month now in terms of updates, especially now that we’re also knee deep in the fall festival season. I love this time of year so much, which makes this a pleasure, but still…it’s crunch time. You really want to start making these predictions as close to accurate as possible at this point, so while it’s still fun, it’s also work. As you’ll see below, I’ve made some changes in light of festivals like Telluride, Venice, and now the start of Toronto, with New York to come next week. Suffice to say, by the end of the month when I update these predictions, they’ll likely already be out of date. The big thing to take note of here is...

With the success of "Furious 7" and "Jurassic World," Universal Pictures broke the record for the highest-grossing year ever for a studio. And it accomplished this goes in just seven months. Universal has grossed a whopping $5.53 billion, surpassing 20th Century Fox, which ended last year with $5.52 billion. "We are in business with some of the most talented people in the industry and the success of our slate this year is a testament to the creativity and vision of our filmmakers," said the studio. "With five months remaining in 2015 and ten films still to come, we look forward to celebrating even more record-breaking milestones." Universal had many big films, including "Jurassic World" ($1.562 billion), "Furious 7" ($1.515 billion), which are the third and fifth highest-grossing films in history. Then there are "Minions" ($875 million), "Fifty Shades of Grey" ($570 million) and "Pitch Perfect 2" ($283 million). Before the end of the year, the studio will release "Straight Outta Compton,...

Universal Pictures is having a great year. In fact it has grossed $5.53 billion at the worldwide box office in 2015 to date - giving it the biggest year of all time for a single studio, and that's with five months still to go.
20th Century Fox held the previous record with $5.52 billion last year, but that was across the entire twelve months. That Universal has done this in just seven months, and without a single superhero franchise which is the genre du jour of the moment, is nothing short of astonishing.
The studio has been powered by the key global success of five quite different and diverse films - "Jurassic World" ($1.562 billion), "Furious 7" ($1.515 billion), "Minions" ($875 million), "Fifty Shades of Grey" ($570 million) and "Pitch Perfect 2" ($283 million). Even small films like "Unfriended" ($54 million) "The Boy Next Door" ($50 million) were highly profitable, and the yet to really open globally "Trainwreck" is already looking like another solid hit.

Now fully into the second half of the year (and believe it or not, we’re almost done with July), it’s the time that most start thinking about the Oscar contenders to come. Of course, I’ve already been doing that, but certain recent Trailers (one I’ve already spoken about this week in The Revenant and one I’ll be writing about on Monday in Freeheld) have worked as a fond reminder that awards season isn’t nearly as far away as you think. As such, I’m tinkering a bit with predictions, as well as expanding my list of contenders, basically so I can then tighten things up in the coming weeks and months. That’s the name of the game right now in terms of the predictions here… In terms of major changes to the Oscar race, you’ll notice the removal of Demolition (which is...

Yes folks, I’m diving back into bi-monthly Oscar predictions! At the very least, I wanted to sort of wrap up the first half of the year with a slightly different set of predictions. The Academy Awards are still a ways off in the distance, but without question we have things changing the potential contenders here and there. For example, the impetus of this extra update is to see where Pixar’s Inside Out could fit into things. I’m sticking with a big push for Ridley Scott’s The Martian, just like last time, but I wanted to take into account what the animated flick could do. Also, I wanted to fill out the technical categories a bit more, which includes some films that we haven’t talked much about. Obviously, things are still in their infancy, but I felt this was justified. Plus, who doesn’t love an update to Oscar predictions?...

I’d been planning all week to write about Ridley Scott and Matt Damon’s The Martian, which debuted an incredible Trailer at the start of the week, but decided to hold off and incorporate it into my new Oscar predictions update. Why? Well, mainly because the film appears to be exceeding even my high expectations. I said after the Trailer debut of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ Bridge of Spies that you couldn’t bet against that one right now, but if you want to be bold, The Martian is one route to take. You’ll see in my predictions that I’ve decided to get a bit risky this time out… Yes, instead of just going with as many obvious frontrunners for Academy Awards as possible, I’m looking to see what some fresh blood here and there might look like. As such, The Martian is really all over the place,...

Almost five full months into the 2015 movie season and I’m happy to report that we know zilch about the Oscar race. Why happy? Well, it means there’s plenty of fun guesswork to be done, and I’m all about that. The Cannes Film Festival has gotten underway and that can be used for a hint or two, but right now, it’s only eliminated one film (The Sea of Trees, which seems to be out of it entirely, outside of perhaps Matthew McConaughey) and made another a question mark (Woody Allen’s Irrational Man), with some other contenders like Carol still to screen. As such, your guess is as good as mine, which is part of the early year fun, at least in my book. The one thing of note that I want to make mention of for this latest Oscar prediction update is that I expanded the fields a bit.

This month Alan Rickman's A Little Chaos, Ryan Gosling's Lost River and Russell Crowe's The Water Diviner see these performers make the dizzying leap from actor to director. But in which of their colleagues' footsteps might they follow?
We take a look at six different categories of actor-turned-directors.
The career-changers
Too handsome to be a supporting actor, and lacking the gravitas of a major star, Ben Affleck looked to be heading towards Kilmer-ville before he released Gone Baby Gone, a dark Dennis Lehane thriller he co-wrote and directed, with brother Casey taking the lead. Follow-up The Town proved solid, but his next effort, Argo, was a surprise Best Picture winner. The fact Affleck didn't receive a Director nomination suggests he's not yet been forgiven for the likes of Gigli, but the forthcoming Lehane adaptation Live By Night should fix that.

After taking the month of March off in terms of Oscar predictions, I’m back taking a new look at what the Academy could do with this upcoming year in film. Again, it’s super early and probably silly to be focusing in on them like I am currently, but it’s also fun and gives us an idea of what movies to potentially look forward to. I’m keeping it mostly short and sweet today, just basically posting an update to the predictions (with a slight detour to discuss one contender), plus the next in line list that I know is popular as well. All of this can and likely will change in the near future, possibly even in the summer when things first begin to shape up, so stay tuned on that front. For now, enjoy these Academy Award predictions and cross your fingers that we have a good year for prestige films.

I know this seems nuts, but here I am with some Academy Award predictions for next season. We’re a long way out, yes…but for me, this is the absolute most fun time of the year, in terms of forming predictions. Why? Simply put, it’s because anything is possible. If you want to see how an odd nominee would look, you need only predict it. Right now, we’re just as likely to see Steven Spielberg’s latest St. James Place take Best Picture as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s kind of a brilliant thing, really. Even so, I’ve tried to be as logical as possible here, foregoing a number of quirkier picks in favor of the contenders I really feel good about, even if it really is only February still. Which films are in contention? You’ll be able to see below, but...

Leo Hannewijk, festival director at Film by the Sea in Vlissingen, has taken up a new, additional role as film commissioner in Zeeland.
His appointment comes as film activity in the region is intensifying, partly in response to the new Dutch cash rebate incentive introduced last year.
Recent films to have shot in Zeeland include Berlinale title Confetti Harvest, the first feature by Tallulah H. Schwab and Sergio Herman, Fucking Perfect, a feature doc about the titular master chef who decides to let go of his three-star restaurant Oud Sluis in the region in order to fulfill his dreams.
Also shooting in the region was Roel Reiné’s epic seafaring costume drama Michiel De Ruyter, starring Charles Dance, Frank Lammers and Rutger Hauer. A Film will be giving Michiel De Ruyter a 150-copy release in the Netherlands later this month.

The 34th annual Atlantic Film Festival (Aff) announced its full festival program, featuring over 190 films and a full slate of special events, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 11-18.
"A film festival’s primary reason for existing is to celebrate film and to say this year’s line up of films and events is a celebration is a dramatic understatement,” said Wayne Carter, Executive Director. “The sheer breadth and quality of films from both our Atlantic region and beyond offers something for everyone and when you match that with special events that deliver an experience to remember we confidently feel we are raising the bar like never before."
“Our Government is pleased to support this iconic event through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, as part of our commitment to building a strong, competitive regional economy, said the Honorable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). The Festival generates tangible benefits for our region, opening new doors to international markets for local artists and industry professionals.”
The Atlantic Film Festival’s Gala Red Carpet Opening Night will take place at a new venue this year, the Dalhousie Arts Centre’s Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. Sponsored by NBC Universal, Telefilm Canada and the Canada Media Fund, this star-studded evening will feature the
Opening Gala presentation of "Elephant Song," directed by Charles Binamé ("The Rocket," "Seraphin" ).
Set in 1966, a psychiatrist (Bruce Greenwood) cautiously pries one secret after another from a charismatic but unbalanced patient (Xavier Dolan) concerning the disappearance of the patient’s doctor. What begins as a psychological cat-and-mouse game quickly becomes a far more serious exchange about loss, memory and mystery, with deadly consequences all around. Fuelled by moving performances from an all-star cast, including Bruce Greenwood, Xavier Dolan, Catherine Keener and Carrie-Ann Moss, "Elephant Song" is an exceptional trip into the world of imagination and desire. "Elephant Song" is produced Richard Goudreau and Melenny Productions and is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One.
Following the Opening Gala film presentation is the Opening Night Party. Penned as one of Halifax’s ‘most anticipated parties of the year’, the red-carpet event is once again sponsored by NBCUniversal and will take place at the Cunard Centre on Thursday, Sept. 11.
The Festival's Closing Gala presentation on Thursday, Sept. 18 will be "Maps to the Stars" by director, David Cronenberg. His latest feature film sees the veteran horror director veering into satire, comedy, and social commentary while still providing enough shocks to satisfy his old audience as he courts the new. This time out it is Hollywood itself that is the Toronto filmmaker’s target, telling multiple tales of past-it thespians, desperate wannabees and out-of-control child actors all colliding in a fast-paced, fame-obsessed world where nobody holds anything back. Both funny and terrifying, "Map To the Stars" sees "All About Eve" accelerated into Entourage on steroids.
"Maps to the Stars" is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One.
Featuring the newest and most anticipated films of the year, moviegoers will want to be first in line to see the eight films comprising the
2014 Rogers Special Presentations. Savour the sights and sounds of soon to be award-winning films: ’71 , a moving combat film set during a terrifying riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971; "Foxcatcher," starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo; Simon Pegg as a disillusioned psychiatrist on the hunt for meaning in "Hector and the Search for Happiness;" Mike Leigh’s "Mr. Turner," featuring the award-winning performance of Timothy Spall; the hilarious and heart-warming film, "My Old Lady" with Kevin Kline, Kristen Scott Thomas and Maggie Smith; Jake Gyllenhaal’s career-defining performance in Dan Gilroy’s "Nightcrawler;" and Ruba Nadda’s
"October Gale," starring Patricia Clarkson, Scott Speedman and Tim Roth.
The Aff will once again feature French films from Canada and around the world. This year’s Cinéma En Français S.V.P. program will take place from Friday, Sept. 12 to Monday, Sept. 15 and will feature two Gala Presentations. Xavier Dolan’s "Mommy" will be the Gala Français Canadien and Jean-Luc Godard’s "Adieu au langage 3D" ("Goodbye to Language 3D") will be the Gala Français International – reuniting the two Jury Prize winners from this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Rounding out this year’s complete program is a top-tier line up of features and documentaries from Canada and throughout the world. Viewers will delight in a wide range of features such as: François Girard’s "Boychoir;" Kristen Stewart in both "Camp X-Ray" and "Clouds of Sils Maria;" Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s "Coming Home" (Gui Lai); "God Help the Girl" by Belle & Sebastien’s Stuart Murdoch; Cannes opener, "Grace of Monaco;" Sundance winner, "Whiplash;" Palme d’Or winner, "Winter Sleep;" and many more.
Select documentaries include: Nick Cave-focussed "20,000 Days on Earth;" a career-spanning look at one of film’s greatest directors in
"Altman;" the story of Russian hockey dominance in "Red Army;" a look inside Sesame Street’s most beloved character in "I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story;" and an exposé of bird poaching in "Emptying the Skies," among many other captivating and enlightening titles.
Also included in this year’s line up are Short Film Programs, featuring both a Canadian and international selection, a ViewFinders: Films for Youth program, film retrospectives at the Dalhousie Art Gallery, and the Festival’s always popular Late Shift program, which this year will screen the 40th Anniversary Restoration of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
The 2014 Festival will host several one-of-a kind special events and parties to celebrate the movies, the people and the city of Halifax. In addition to the Opening Night Party and debuting at this year’s festival is the Festival Music House Atlantic presented by Radio Starmaker Fund . The event offers some of the hottest music acts in the country (open exclusively to Festival Passholders and Festival Delegates).
The event will also feature A State of Mine Exhibition , an exhibition from photographer, Chris Geworsky exploring the personal, intimate and unique place each subject visits when he/she loses themselves in their own music; the Ofe@Aff – an Aff Outdoor Film Experience screening of Aff’s 2012 Atlantic Gala film, The Disappeared on the Dartmouth Waterfront; and the 34th Atlantic Film Festival Awards Reception , honoring the amazing talents of Atlantic Canadian film industry professionals.
Strategic Partners , a one-of-a-kind event focusing on film, television and digital fiction, from across Canada and around the world, will take place as part of Aff, Sept. 11-14. Each year, top Canadian and international industry players, including producers, investors, sales agents, funding agencies, broadcasters, aggregators and distributors are selected to attend. Recognized as one of the world’s pre-eminent co-production markets and celebrating its 17th year, Strategic Partners 2014 is shining the Country Spotlight brightly on Latin America and the U.S., and offering delegates over 1,000 pre-scheduled 1-2-1 meetings, co-production focused roundtable sessions, cutting edge panels, visionary keynote speakers, screenings and receptions as well as the popular Film & Creative Industries Nova Scotia Lobster Dinner By the Sea.

With the second movie she’s directed now in post-production, Angelina Jolie has lined up her next with By The Sea. She actually penned the script and plans on also directing and starring in it.
However, joining her will be her husband Brad Pitt, making this the first time that the two have worked together since 2005′s Mr and Mrs Smith. Unfortunately, there are no plot details available on By The Sea as of yet, but Universal have already picked up the rights and are clearly pleased with what Jolie has done with Unbroken.
That movie (which is set for a Christmas release) is based on the true story of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini and adapted from author Laura Hillenbrand’s bestseller. By The Sea on the other hand is described as an intimate, character-driven drama, and Jolie and Pitt will also be producing it together.

Has there been a major Hollywood couple where the wife actually directed her husband in a movie? The Hollywood directing ranks are overwhelmingly male, but there have been no shortage of power couples that could have tried it out. But more often than not, it's the man who wears the pants behind the camera. Kudos to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who, with the help of Universal, will try to change that. CNN reports that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will star in By The Sea, which Jolie will write and direct. The material is being called an "intimate character-driven drama," which likely means it will share no DNA with the last time Pitt and Jolie were onscreen together. That would be nine years ago, when they finally became a romantic pair offscreen while shooting the fantasy action romance Mr And Mrs. Smith. This will be Jolie's third directorial effort.

Brad Pitt can take a heartfelt piece of home with him wherever he goes! The actor wore a homemade shirt when he touched down in Marseille, France, on Thursday. The adorable piece, believed to be a gift from his daughter Vivienne, features a detailed drawing of a couple bearing a strong resemblance to him and Angelina Jolie. As if that's not cute enough, Brad wore the same cap that's drawn on his shirt, which is part of his go-to ensemble. It's not the first time Brad has shown off his child's labor of love - we last saw him don the piece when he and Angelina geared up for their whirlwind London trip in June. Although Brad flew solo to France this week, he's set to spend a lot of time with Angelina when they start shooting their next project. It had already been announced that Angelina Jolie was prepping her "Unbroken" follow-up and that her beau, superstar Brad Pitt, would be starring. Naturally, every studio in town would have been champing at the bit to land this one, but it seems Jolie's experience with Universal has been pleasant enough that they'll be getting the goods, and not just domestically but worldwide. The film, called "By the Sea," was written by Jolie as well, but details on the plot are elusive. The press release only offered that it is a "character-driven drama." Jolie's directorial debut, "In the Land of Blood and Honey," was set against the Bosnian War, while "Unbroken" tells the epic true story of Olympian-turned-World War II Pow Louis Zamperini.
