Last Week’S Review: “The Lying Detective’ Gives Us Sherlock’s Most Terrifying Villain Yet
[Spoilers follow for Season 4, Episode 3, “The Final Problem.”]
Season 4 of Sherlock has galloped by — which is easy enough, when the seasons are only three episodes long — but it ends on an oddly final note. Although cast and crew insist that this isn’t necessarily the end, Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss wrap up their 13th episode on an elegiac note, musing on the legend that is Sherlock and Watson.
It’s just a shame the rest of the episode was such a mess, really.
Don’t Look Now, Mycroft
The opening of the episode is pure Gatiss — in what seems like it must be a dream sequence but isn’t, Mycroft is haunted by the voice of his sister (represented by what we assume is a little girl but is actually a small man in a wig), a clown, and portraits that weep blood.

Elementary serves up a whydunit this week, which takes some of the fun out of things for the viewer…
This review contains spoilers.
3.15 When Your Number’s Up
This week’s whydunit made a change from Elementary’s usual whodunit mysteries, though not necessarily a welcome one. Spending the episode steps ahead of the Great Detective and waiting for him to catch up rather spoils the point of a Sherlock Holmes story, wouldn’t you say?
We’re here to marvel at Holmes’ deductive genius and be stunned by his final revelation, not to drum our fingertips while he laboriously inches towards the same knowledge we’ve had since the opening scene. Arguably, the most satisfying part of any Sherlock story is the point at which he swoops on the culprit, police ready and waiting, and simultaneously explains the game to Watson and the readers.

Elementary’s two plot threads couldn’t be more tonally different in this week’s gloriously bonkers/tragic episode…
This review contains spoilers.
3.14 The Female Of The Species
Now that it’s been around long enough to have one, Elementary’s past is starting to pay real dividends.
Take this week’s reappearance of Gina Gershon’s mob boss. Elana Marsh was last seen thirteen episodes ago being put away by Watson in the season three opener. Elementary hadn’t forgotten about her in the meantime, it was simply waiting to harvest the seed planted all those months ago.
It was a structurally neat return for Gershon’s character, who bracketed Watson’s experiment in flying solo as a Pi. Marsh was there for the beginning of Watson’s enterprise, and her death coincided with its conclusion. Andrew’s misadventure with the poisoned latte has convinced Watson that a normal life was beyond her reach,...
