- After nine days at sea the schooner Vaitere arrives at the coral island Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago. The ship anchors some hundred meters from the coast, and the Botman family has to get into a lifeboat with all their baggage to be able to reach the shore. The two Russian men come along, although they are not going to stay at Raroia. They are only making a short visit, before continuing with the schooner. When the sailors try to surf with the lifeboat on a big wave to get across the coral reef, the boat capsizes, and the passengers and all their baggage fall into the water. In soaked clothes the Botman family arrive to the welcome ceremony. Among the natives Villervalle recognizes Kaoko, the young stowaway from the ocean liner. Villervalle is still suspicious of the activities of two Russian men. To be able to spy on them, he dyes his hair and eyebrows black, so he looks like one of the native boys. The Russians ask the natives if they have seen a big stone that looks like the head of a man, but the discussion is interrupted, so Villervalle doesn't get the meaning of this inquiry.
- Every morning the Botman family receives a dog as a present from the natives, but cannot understand why. When Kaoko explains that the dogs are for food, and that they have already eaten dogs at the welcome party, the family feels nausea. They return two of the dogs to the villagers, but keep the third one as a pet. Ernst starts his health care program by examining the teeth of the natives. One night a villager wakes him up, and asks him to help the villager's pregnant wife to deliver a baby. Villervalle accompanies his father to the hut. Afterwards they realize that today is December 13th, the feast day of Saint Lucia. They decide to surprise the female members of the family by organizing a traditional Swedish Lucia procession, with Villervalle as Lucia and Ernst as a star boy, both dressed in white gowns. The family then gets the idea to introduce this Swedish tradition to the natives of Raroia. The Lucia procession goes to the hut of Chief Toukorangi, but when they arrive the lodgers run away in panic, believing that the persons in white gowns are pit ghosts.
- Villervalle and Lenalisa have to spend several hours every day reading schoolbooks, supervised by their grandmother. When Kaoko goes to his outrigger canoe for fishing, Villervalle cannot resist following him, and plays truant from school. Kaoko informs Villervalle that here they use hermit crabs as baits. Kaoko fills his hat with crabs, and then put the hat on his head. The following day is Sunday and no school work. The Botman family joins the natives and goes to Mass in the Catholic Church, built by coral stones in 1875. Monday morning the grandmother discovers that despite her watch-keeping, Villervalle has already slipped away. She asks a native woman to assist her in chasing the escaped schoolboy. Villervalle and Kaoko go in the outrigger canoe to the reef side of the island, where it's easy to harpoon fishes with spears. Out in the coral reef an octopus coils its arms around Villervalle's leg, who runs away in panic. Kaoko kills the octopus with a stone, and invites Villervalle to taste its raw meat. Suddenly the grandmother turns up with her rifle and assistant, and captures the two boys.
