Hugo Van der Vennet was a Belgian writer and director, who pioneered docudrama in Flanders while working for BRTN (aka VRT). Most of his TV-related work focused on local folkore. Subjects included the Baekelandt gang and the Order of the Templars. During the 1970s, he directed 'Vlaanderen Vakantieland' and its precursor 'Boeketje Vlaanderen'. He was among the first non-Chinese directors allowed into Communist China, where he made a documentary in 1976. As a writer, he worked on 'Kliniek met de 7 verdiepingen' (1974), 'Zo met de zoo in huis' (1970), and acted in 'Hee (Dag meneer)' (1971). He died on April 13, 2010.
