This is going to be a short review, primarily because there is virtually no difference between the HD DVD release of Transformers, which I reviewed back in October 2007, and this Blu-ray release. All of the special features are the same. Both come with two discs in which the feature itself and the special features are offered in HD. Both offer online connectivity (however the Bd-Live feature doesn't seem to be activated yet so I wasn't able to connect) and in such they offer the same downloadable features. I even played both the HD DVD and Blu-ray versions at the same time and visually I saw no difference except to say maybe the HD DVD version was a little darker. The only noticeable difference was the audio on the Blu-ray version is much better as it offers Dolby TrueHD, which was much clearer than the Dolby Digital Plus available on the HD DVD,

From left to right: Quentin Tarantino, M. Night Shyamalan, Kevin Smith, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Brian De Palma, Ethan and Joel Coen, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese In search of an idea for another top ten list I got to thinking about directors. Who is the best director? Who is the worst director? Those two questions require some serious research and I just don't think I am learned enough to say one way or another. Then I got to thinking about who may be the most overrated director? The best thing about this question is that it eliminates the likes of Uwe Boll from the conversation and I don't need to regurgitate what so many others have said concerning the directors that have gone down in history as great. I don't have to worry about telling you how great Alfred Hitchcock is and why. It's fantastic. However I

Family tragedy has forced Helena Bonham Carter to stall the production of "Terminator Salvation". According to WENN, the "Sweeney Todd" actress has to leave the set of the forthcoming action thriller to offer encouragement to her grieving family after getting news about the tragic death of her family's members.
Reports claimed that before she flew back to Britain, Bonham Carter has been given an indefinite leave
from the film's set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The long-time partner of renowned filmmaker Tim Burton has been signed to join the cast ensemble of the McG-directed action movie to portray the pivotal role of the villain, Serena. What effect should this delay of shooting in her part bring to the movie is still uncertain.
Previously, publications have brought up the news about the horrific car crash of Bonham Carter's relatives in South Africa. The incident occurred while they were on safari holiday

The following contains Minor Spoilers for the "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" motion picture. Helena Bonham Carter ("Sweeney Todd") recently joined the cast of McG's "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" prequel. She wouldn't tell SciFi Wire much about her character, except that she is not a nice person. "I kind of play a baddie, definitely a baddie," Bonham Carter said in an interview. "I don't know how much I'm allowed to say, but I'm a very bad person." At the last minute, Carter replaced Tilda Swinton in the film. When she was offered the role, she felt like she couldn't say no because her longtime partner Tim Burton "would have killed me if I hadn't done it because he's such a 'Terminator' fan." Carter is no stranger to big-budget films with her work ...

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | Rss Feed Well, as you can see I am attempting a new layout this week and I have a feeling it will be changing over the next month or so as I am working on ways to make this column a little easier on me by having the database do most of the work. I can say this week was easier, but I think I still have a little something up my sleeve to speed up the process a little more and perhaps add a few more bells and whistles to the presentation below. Enough of that though, let's see what's out there this week. Van Helsing (2-Disc Collector's Edition) I actually have this here in the lab, and I couldn't bring myself to watch it again. I tried giving it another go around way back when I received the HD DVD version and I just couldn't.

Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen will play the lead characters in a Judd Apatow-produced Sherlock Holmes comedy for Columbia Pictures.
Although plot details have not been revealed yet, Variety reports Etan Cohen (“Tropic Thunder”) is writing the script. Baron Cohen will play master detective Holmes, while Ferrell will jump into the role of his partner Watson.
The film reteams Ferrell and Baron Cohen, who played bitter rivals in Adam McKay’s Talladega Nights,” which Apatow also produced.
Ferrell recently starred in “Semi-Pro” and will next be seen alongside John C. Reilly in McKay’s “Step Brothers.”
Baron Cohen was last seen in “Sweeney Todd” and is currently filming “Bruno,” a mockumentary in the style of “Borat.”
As for Apatow, he’s gearing up for his next directorial effort “Funny People,” which stars Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Eric Bana and Jonah Hill.

There has been cautious optimism about the upcoming Terminator trilogy since it was announced that Christian Bale would play John Connor.
The cast has filled out rather nicely since then - funny how that works - although I still question whether McG is the right director. Then again, I said the same thing about Jonathon Mostow for T3, and that turned out better than I expected.
And now there's news that a new, more-than-reputable actor will join the ensemble that already includes Anton Yelchin, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Common, and Bryce Dallas Howard. WENN is reporting that Helena Bonham Carter "has been offered a small but pivotal role" in the film.
Last year, Bonham Carter received a Golden Globe nomination for Sweeney Todd, and she already has an Oscar nomination for The Wings of the Dove back in 1997. She also has a good gauge for blockbusters and culturally relevant films,

Helena Bonham Carter is in negotiations to appear in McG’s upcoming action flick “Terminator Salvation,” the fourth installment in the popular series launched by James Cameron in 1984.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carter’s role would be small but crucial to the story. The film stars Christian Bale in the role of lead character John Connor, who struggles to prevent the ruthless machines from eradicating humanity.
Anton Yelchin, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood and Bryce Dallas Howard co-star. “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins” already started principal photography, with a release date set for May 22, 2009. A potential SAG strike could however cause delays in the production.
Bonham Carter was last seen alongside Johnny Depp in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” She will next reprise her role as Bellatrix Lestrange in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”
Although she’s supposed to make a brief appearance only, her addition

Oh, I can’t stand the suspense! This week, the 34th annual Saturn Awards handed out their usual fare of achievement recognizing statues.
In the event you aren’t aware of what they are, the Saturn Awards are the honors handed out by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. The Academy has been delivering their awards for over thirty years and they look to recognize cinematic achievement.
It’s a recognized validation of the genre we so fervently appreciate.
Some of the more noteworthy recipients of the awards:
Walt Disney Studios picked up three awards, ABC’s Lost snagged four awards, and 300 picked up 2 awards.
More specifically, some of the categories that caught my eye were:
Best Science Fiction Film: Cloverfield
Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film: 300
Best Actor: Will Smith (I Am Legend)
Best Special Effects: Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Russell Earl, John Frazier (Transformers)
Best Network Television

Broadway came out swinging Sunday night for the 62nd annual Tony Awards, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. August: Osage County was named best play and won five awards in all, while In the Heights was the recipient of four Tonys, including best musical. Besides the top award, In the Heights, a celebration of Latin-community life in Upper Manhattan, was recognized for its orchestration, choreography and score, with its writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda, stopping the show with his acceptance speech – delivered, in breathtaking fashion, as a rap song. Adding to its distinction as this year's Pulitzer Prize winner for drama, the Steppenwolf Theatre

Let the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and all of those film festivals hand out trophies for movies offering high drama and art. The folks who vote for the MTV Movie Awards appeared to have fun as their top criteria when they handed out their golden popcorn trophy Sunday night. They gave Transformers their top award for best film. Johnny Depp accepted trophies for best comedic performance for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and for best villain for Sweeney Todd. Accepting the first award, Depp seemed as curious about it as anyone in the audience. "You can ask anybody," he said. "I'm not a very funny person. I'm not even remotely funny."
