Product Description

Review
A beautifully shallow spectacle, Stephen Fry's debut Bright Young Things is a fine way to pass the time. The fast-paced script of playful banter is delivered with charm from the cast of seasoned theatrical stage actors. Newcomer Stephen Campbell Moore is generally likable as the young writer Adam Fenwick-Symes, a cute leading man caught up in a world of excessive partying. Emily Mortimer is a little irritating as his materialistic fiance, Nina, but she still carries herself with enough grace to care about her. Other remarkable performances include Michael Sheen as the delicious dandy Miles and Fenella Woolgar as the flapper girl Agatha Runcible. In one of the most fun scenes, an intoxicated Agatha dons a pair of riding goggles and accidentally takes over as driver in a wacky car race. Cameos from Dan Aykroyd, Stockard Channing, and Peter O'Toole are quite brief, but understandably so. The real attraction here is the fabulous period production design, costumes, and original score. The hedonistic youth of the title are lovely to look at as they dance, drink, and practice their conversation skills in fashionable environments. The silly happy ending ties up the romantic plot nicely with the right amount of fuss. While not very emotionally complex, Bright Young Things manages to be exciting entertainment for fans of Oscar Wilde-style wit and '30s glamour. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars A WELL-CRAFTED GEM, Jun 12 2005
By A Customer
A delicious treat for fans of British period pieces! This one is set among the dizzying social set of 1920s/30s London, and is from the novel "Vile Bodies" by Evelyn Waugh. The self-centred bright young things - some of whom are quite fragile - try to shield themselves from the practicalities of life in what prove to be rather brittle shells.
The sets and music are delightful; the performances are excellent. (There's little in the way of DVD special features, but I found the director's commentary interesting and enlightening.)
The cast is filled with MANY familiar and respected British actors, yet offers some fine new talent in key roles as well. (Some hugely famous participants were Peter O'Toole, Jim Broadbent, and John Mills (age 95!) in an amusing silent cameo.)
The charming, multi-talented Stephen Fry is best-known as a wonderful comic actor (e.g. his Jeeves to Hugh Laurie's Wooster), and this is his directorial debut. He must be a very well-liked man to be able to gather all the talent he did, in front of and behind the camera, for a first effort.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable, absorbing movie. That said, it would be a mistake to expect a completely light, amusing, feel-good experience. Evelyn Waugh's stories are satirical; there is definitely some humour and, initially, a bright gloss, but the substance is serious, thoughtful and a bit dark under the entertaining veneer. The movie is not a downer, but one naturally could be disappointed if misled into a false expectation of something totally frothy and light-hearted.
Very satisfying to curl up with for a cosy couple of hours, when not needing total distraction.
(When total distraction is wanted, I heartily recommend "An Ideal Husband", based on the play by Oscar Wilde.)
