Product Description

From Amazon.com
The French director Jacques Demy scored a worldwide hit in 1964 with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, a bittersweet candy-colored romance in which all the dialogue was set to music. Equally enchanting is the musical that reunited Demy with the star and composer of Umbrellas, Catherine Deneuve and Michel Legrand. The film is The Young Girls of Rochefort, an effervescent concoction about traveling players and dreamy-headed demoiselles in a seaside town. Deneuve and her real-life sister, Françoise Dorléac (who died in a car accident not long after the movie was made), play twins who fantasize about life in Paris. But before they leave town, they are distracted by the weekend fair and its colorful singers and dancers. They're also destined to meet an American composer--gloriously, it's Gene Kelly, carrying the aura of classic MGM musicals in his lighter-than-air wake. He was 55 at the time, but much younger in movie years. (Another American, George Chakiris, also dances his way through the film.) Legrand's music isn't as powerful as his Cherbourg score, and some of the choreography would fit right into an Austin Powers discotheque sequence. And the costumes--well, the excesses of '60s mod designs have not aged well. Yet the crazy hairstyles and vinyl boots fit right into the film's sense of gleeful fun. There is a sunny, daffy spirit to this movie that becomes positively infectious. It deserves to be better known. (Try to catch a letterboxed version, if possible.) --Robert Horton

Chronique amazon.fr
--Sylvain Lefort

2.0 out of 5 stars french cheese- the stinky kind, Aug 31 2005
By ,Sarah (Toronto) - See all my reviews
What can I say except that I was pleased that Gene Kelly only had to spend 10 minutes in this unfortunate film. As always, I can't really say anything against Gene Kelly but as for the rest of the film? Well, it is a feeble attempt at creating a french version of the Hollywood musical. They really missed the mark but I guess it would of helped if ANY of the stars could sing. If you can imagine, they dubbed Gene Kelly's singing voice.....mon Dieu.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catherine Deneuve at her most beautiful, April 28 2004
By Peter Tracey (Sydney Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If only life could be eternally sunny and everyone going around singing of Love! This film is GREAT! Catherine Deneuve is radiant in this.I once saw this on TV many years ago dubbed into english but I cannot find any reference to a dubbed version anywhere now? The translation was great though the original version is still excellent.I recall the scene in the cafe in the square where they're discussing the cut up body in the basket. In english it was hilarious & quite droll!
The actress who played the mother was also very good.
I found Gene Kelly a bit over the top which, in this film, is saying something! For anyone who wants some fun escapism I highly recommend this film. The musical score is beautiful, especially the "composition" by Catherine Deneuve's "sister"

3.0 out of 5 stars DEFECTIVE DVD, April 7 2004
By Artful Star "regular liver" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
The other reviews are accurate in describing the film and helping in your descision to buy it. I just wanted to mention that my DVD skipped and jerked during the last few scenes of the film and made it nearly unwatchable. I tried a couple different players with no luck and then sent for a replacement copy which exhibited the exact same behavior. Apparently some defects in this pressing. I wonder if many others have had this problem.
