Last week, writer and director Rian Johnson confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, that Craig would be reprising his role as Benoit Blanc in the next ensemble murder mystery film. In a 45-second video teaser video, he also revealed the sequel’s title as Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
“The next Benoit Blanc mystery, the follow-up to Knives Out and Glass Onion, is called Wake Up Dead Man,” the filmmaker wrote in the post’s caption on Friday.

No major film festival is complete without at least one Love Letter To Cinema™ from a filmmaker of some renown, to advocate the joys of the medium to an audience that doesn’t have to be told twice. French writer-director and Cannes regular Arnaud Desplechin brings that to the Croisette this year with “Filmlovers!,” a duly warm and nostalgia-washed cine-valentine, but one with a little more to say than just, “Movies, amirite?” Indeed, the film’s somewhat inelegant English-language title risks concealing the more specific focus of this unassuming but winning hybrid documentary: The French title, “Spectateurs!,” makes clear this is first and foremost a celebration of spectatorship rather than filmmaking, probing the dynamics of cinema audiences and their relationship to the screen. In either language, it’s impassioned enough to earn its exclamation point.
Not a major work but a bright, pleasurable one, with its director on more limber...

Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for the finale of Hulu’s “Under the Bridge.”
You expect a true crime tale about a murder to end with a conviction, but for the family of the murdered to forgive the guilty party? That’s much less common.
“I think it’s truly the most interesting detail about this entire story, that the Virks not only said to Warren that they forgave him, but that they literally advocated on his behalf and his parole hearing and helped to support him in his transition and to work with restorative justice,” “Under the Bridge” creator Quinn Shephard told IndieWire. “I mean, it’s an immense strength.”
In the finale of Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” which aired May 29, viewers finally see a group of teenagers — particularly Kelly (Izzy G.) and Warren (Javon Walton) — held accountable for killing teenage classmate Reena Virk, and get sentenced.

As of this writing, the "Law & Order" TV empire incorporates 65 seasons of television, providing 1,355 episodes in toto. If you're staying in a hotel anywhere in the world, you can probably turn on your TV and flip only three channels in either direction before you'll come upon a "Law & Order" rerun. It is ubiquitous and eternal, and it has become the ultimate "comfort watch" for a populace hungry for, well, law and order.
While "Law & Order" may feature multiple beloved characters who will stay on their respective shows for many years, they tend to rotate out when a given actor wishes to retire. The shows rarely suffer from multiple, frequent cast changes, however, and they're able to keep telling interesting stories without the benefit of a particular character's point of view. Each character might bring a gruff je ne sais quoi to the series, but after airing for decades,...

On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate thirteen creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, this event is a new edition of its IndieWire Honors event focused entirely on television. Alex Edelman will host the event. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
Alex Edelman’s recollection of attending a Neo-Nazi cocktail party in New York City without telling anyone that he’s Jewish is the marquee moment in “Just for Us,” his blockbuster one-man show that later became an acclaimed HBO special. The anecdote manages to turn a horrifying situation into a comedic exploration of the logical fallacies that are required to maintain a bigoted worldview thanks to Edelman’s sharp wit and his fast-paced delivery. Well, that's one way to resolve a years-long conspiracy theory among the weirdest and nerdiest of fans. The creative team behind "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is apparently taking no chances in the months leading up to season 2 of the Prime Video series, unwilling to let leaks or set photos ruin the biggest surprise in decades of Middle-earth lore. Instead, the fine folks over at Vanity Fair were given an exclusive first look at the burning question at the forefront of all our minds: Will the bizarre character known as Tom Bombadil, whose boots are yellow and is famously a merry fellow, appear in the streaming show?
The answer to that little riddle is now confirmed to be a resounding yes. After all the biggest and most popular adaptations of author J.R.R. Tolkien's work to this point went out of their way to avoid mentioning...

“Stranger Things” star Gaten Matarazzo revealed on the “Inside of You” podcast that he’s had a few interactions with “Stranger Things” fans that have been “a little uncomfortable.” A recent encounter with a mother in her 40s was especially “insane,” as the mother openly told Matarazzo that she had a crush on him while standing in front of her own daughter. Matarazzo thought she might be joking, but she “doubled down.”
“I did one very recently — and this is not very funny, but the reactions around it were quite funny — where this woman in her 40s said straight up, ‘I’ve had a crush on you since you were 13,’” Matarazzo said (via Us Magazine). “And I was like, ‘That’s upsetting.’ I’m sure she just meant, ‘Aw, this kid’s cute.’ But then she doubled down.”

One of IndieWire’s favorite movies of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival has found a home. Metrograph Pictures has acquired the North American rights to “Gazer,” the neo-noir, heist thriller from director Ryan J. Sloan that premiered in the Director’s Fortnight sidebar at Cannes, IndieWire can reveal exclusively.
Metrograph is planning a theatrical release for the film with release plans to be announced at a later date. Financial details were not disclosed.
IndieWire’s review raved about “Gazer,” saying it combines “the manic paranoia of ‘After Hours‘ with a ‘Memento’-esque unreliable protagonist and touches of flesh-bending body horror that could be ripped straight from ‘Videodrome.'” It offers a new spin on neo-noir and paranoia thrillers of the ’70s and ’80s, but it resists becoming pure pastiche, as our critic Christian Zilko dubbed it.

"Challengers" is one of the best films of the year (read our review here), a thrilling, sexy, adult drama about two guys who love each other and one woman who loves tennis. While the marketing played up a threesome scene that never actually happens (the scene only involves some heavy kissing), "Challengers" is still one of the year's biggest surprises with a killer ending. Stars Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist are all on fire here, Luca Guadagnino's direction is energetic and exciting, and the score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is full of absolute bangers.
Besides all the sexy melodrama, some of the best elements of "Challengers" are the thrilling tennis sequences that turn the sport into a non-stop thrillride, complete with a tennis ball Pov that flies back and forth at lightning speed. I watch a lot of movies, and I know how movies are made,...

“Truth Serum,” a short film starring “Baby Reindeer” creator Richard Gadd, has been snapped up by Omeleto.
Directed by Vika Evdokimenko, “Truth Serum” is a comedy that follows a group of guests at a housewarming party who are slipped a mysterious drug. “When ugly truths start to emerge, chaos reigns and threatens the relationships of old friends,” reads the logline.
“Baby Reindeer” fans will no doubt enjoy seeing Gadd playing a character that is not dissimilar to the Netflix series’ Donny Dunn. Gadd’s character of Jimi is friends with the host couple; he is described as a “liability” whose “self-destructive behavior masks deep self-loathing and a secret that’s not ready to come out.”
Gadd stars alongside Olivia Vinall (“Road Kill”) as a party hostess at the end of her tether and Sophie Kennedy Clark (“The Danish Girl”) as an unreformed party girl who’s dragged her underage daughter along for the ride.

The Cannes 2024 market saw a thrilling revival with nine movies — including four movies in the main competition — selling to specialized distributors in domestic deals. However, this wasn’t exactly a return to business as normal: The buyers weren’t stalwarts like A24, or Focus, or IFC. Instead Mubi, Metrograph Pictures, and Sideshow (in partnership with Janus Films) established themselves as major buyers.
Mubi bought three titles in the main competition: “The Girl With the Needle,” “The Substance,” and added North American rights on Andrea Arnold’s “Bird.” (It came to the festival with UK rights.) “The Substance” starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley represents a major swing for the upstart, with one source placing the deal in the low-eight figures.

Brad Pitt and George Clooney are two lone-wolf fixers who are forced to work together after they’re tasked with the same assignment in Jon Watts’ upcoming action comedy “Wolfs,” in theaters Sept. 20 via Sony.
As Clooney puts on gloves to cover up what looks like a grisly murder, he assures a woman, “There’s nobody who can do who I do.” Seconds later, Pitt walks in wearing a similar outfit, already gloved.
In addition to Pitt and Clooney, the cast also includes Austin Abrams, Amy Ryan and Poorna Jagannathan.

Brad Pitt and George Clooney are back together on film — outside of the “Ocean’s” cinematic universe.
The duo co-star in action-comedy movie “Wolfs,” which is written and directed by Jon Watts. In “Wolfs,” Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. Just another night in the fixer industry, we imagine.

George Clooney as a fixer? "Wolfs" is not, in fact, the sequel to the former Batman's excellent 2007 legal thriller "Michael Clayton." It does, however, reunite Clooney with his "Ocean's" trilogy costar Brad Pitt for the kind of original adult genre film that's in short supply these days. And no, before you ask, that's not a spelling mistake. We're talking about "Wolfs," not the 2014 werewolf flick "Wolves" ... or the 2016 sports drama "Wolves" ... or even 2022's murder mystery "Wolves." Man, who knew "Wolves" was such a versatile title?
"Wolfs" sees Clooney and Pitt playing a pair of fixers who're assigned to the same job in what will surely be a cage-match to rival that of "Godzilla vs. Kong" or Alien vs. Predator." Or maybe not; the trailer teaser and unofficial set photos released ahead of today's trailer premiere have much more of a "Locke" vibe, with Clooney and Pitt sitting in stony...

Director Jon Watts is showing off his versatility and arguably getting back to his filmmaking roots. While Watts is known for directing three “Spider-Man” movies for Marvel, the filmmaker started out in the world of thriller and indies and got his breakout start with 2015’s “Cop Car,” which found much acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival that year. The buzz on the indie landed Watts the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” gig, which occupied him for several years, but he’s returning to the land of dramatic thrillers with the new starry field, “Wolfs.”

Aloha, Moana. (The hello kind.)
Disney released a teaser trailer (below) for “Moana 2” on Wednesday. Our princess of Motunui is still out there voyaging, still drumming with her dead ancestors, still battling coconuts — it honestly just looks like additional “Moana” footage. That’s not automatically a bad thing. Also, it’s not yet the trailer trailer, so we’ll cut it a break — especially considering the feature film’s own origin story.
“Moana 2” was originally planned as a Disney+ series. Well, upgrade. Now a proper sequel, “Moana 2” welcomes back Auli’i Cravalho (as Moana), Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Nicole Scherzinger as Sina, and Temuera Morrison as Chief Tai.
Also an “upgrade” is Maui’s “boat snack” — the pig, Pua, has joined Heihei the chicken on Moana’s boat. Johnson gets the big joke of the teaser trailer: “Bacon and eggs!?! Why didn’t you bring the pig last time?...

Last year, Jennifer Lopez starred in so-so Netflix actioner "The Mother," in which she sniped her way through wave after wave of bad guys. Unfortunately the film marked yet another moment whereby the streaming age subsumed a former megastar into its nebulous cloud of generic "content." If "The Mother" isn't enough to convince you of such developments, just take a look at "Atlas," the latest Lopez-starring Netflix original film.
It should be said that the trailer for "Atlas" did look promising, but critics certainly aren't too impressed with this sci-fi actioner, which comes from director Brad Peyton ("San Andreas") and also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, and Mark Strong. Lopez plays an AI-wary data analyst who quickly finds herself in a situation where she's forced to rely on a synthetic consciousness to survive a mission gone awry. In a reverse-"Blade Runner" scenario, Lopez's character, Atlas Shepherd, travels to...

Netflix has released the trailer for its new romantic comedy “A Family Affair,” starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Joey King, Liza Koshy and Kathy Bates, from the producers of “Anyone but You.”
The film follows Zara Ford (King), a young woman who discovers that her single mother Brooke (Kidman) is having an affair with her self-absorbed, movie star boss Chris Cole (Efron). “A Family Affair” marks the third instance of Efron and Kidman sharing the big screen, the first being “The Paperboy” in 2012 followed by “The Butler” releasing next year.
“I am starting to feel things that I never thought I would feel again, not since your father died,” Brooke admits to her daughter in the trailer. Zara roars back at her mother, “No! You did not just say that!”
King has been a staple of the Netflix original catalog since starring as Elle Evans in the “Kissing Booth” film trilogy.

Sophia Di Martino knows why the Marvel Studios breakout series “Loki” was so successful creatively. It was partially due to the casting. Much of it was in the writing and the direction, but mostly, it was about the dynamic between the title character, played by Tom Hiddleston, and Loki’s multiverse doppelganger, Sylvie, portrayed by Di Martino herself.

“Some of it’s in the writing, some of it’s in what Tom does, a little bit of it’s what I do, but that it’s how these two characters rub each other up the wrong way,” Di Martino says.

For those lucky enough to have experienced this, think back to how you first managed to get your dream job. The painstaking process of gathering enough relevant experience over the years, looking for open positions, and sending out résumés to whomever will take them -- not to mention all the rejections along the way -- can turn even the best and most optimistic of us into cynical grumps. Actors, for all the glitz and glamor we see from the outside looking in, oftentimes have to suffer through similar moments of heartbreak over and over again. Not all actors, however, are Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

See the line where the sky meets the sea? In 2016, audiences heeded the call of "Moana," capping off a fantastic year for Disney Animation that also saw eventual Best Animated Feature Film Oscar winner "Zootopia" top over a billion dollars at the box office. Closing in on a decade later, however, the House That Mickey Built has fallen on harder times after suffering one of its costliest box office misfires ever with "Strange World" and releasing what was intended to be the crown jewel in its 100th-anniversary celebration, "Wish," to middling reviews and even worse financial returns. It's under these circumstances that Bob Iger, fresh off having un-retired from his position as Disney's CEO, has announced further adventures with both the furry members of the Zootopia Police Department (Zpd) and the studio's beloved Pacific Islander princess.

The line where the sky meets the sea is calling Moana once again, as Disney has released the first trailer for its highly-anticipated “Moana” sequel. The trailer sees the return of Moana and Maui, voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, respectively, on another oceanic adventure.
According to its official description, “Moana 2” reunites “Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
“This is a call from the ancestors to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean,” Moana says in the trailer. Maui then makes an appearance on her boat, referring to a chicken and pig as “boat snacks.”

“Emilia Pérez” breakout star Karla Sofía Gascón, who won the best actress prize at Cannes Film Festival alongside Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz, has filed a complaint against French far-right politician Marion Marechal alleging “sexist insult due to one’s gender identity.”
The charges stem from a post on X in which Marechal, who is currently campaigning in European elections for the far-right Reconquête party, wrote upon Gascón’s win at Cannes that “it is therefore a man who receives in Cannes the prize for… best actress. The progress for the left wing is the erasing of women and mothers.”
The vitriolic social post sparked outrage within the LGBTQ community and beyond. Gascón’s lawsuit follows a complaint lodged by six LGBTQ groups on Monday for “transphobic insult.”
Speaking to Variety, Etienne Deshoulières, the lawyer who represents both Gascón and the LGBTQ organizations, said Gascón took legal action...

"City of God" is so much more than just Brazil's answer to "GoodFellas,". One of the most acclaimed Brazilian films of all time, Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund's 2001 masterpiece is a portrait of Rio de Janeiro and its reality, the ugly and the beautiful sides of it. Set in the favelas of Rio in the '70s, we follow two men, each following a different part they say is forced on them by their Dickensian circumstances — one becomes a photographer documenting the drug-related violence that is rapidly increasing in the neighborhood, the other an ambitious drug dealer climbing the ladder.
In addition to gathering universal acclaim for its acting, cinematography, writing and portrayal of the favelas, "City of God" also got four nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director. Now, over 20 years after the release of the original, Max announced a sequel series.

A fun-filled terror yarn featuring a flesh-eating alien secretly reared by a 12-year-old that delights in cutting its teeth on the apartment block’s pets
This killer-spider-from-outer-space movie feels like a cross between Alien and TV’s Only Murders in the Building. It’s a mostly fun throwback horror comedy set in a Brooklyn apartment block where 12-year-old Charlotte (Alyla Browne) finds a spider, puts it in a jar and calls it Sting. “Awesome,” she marvels when Sting doubles in size in two hours, hungrily tapping the glass for more cockroaches to chomp on. What Charlotte doesn’t know is that her new pet is a flesh-eater recently hatched out of an asteroid that crash landed on Earth.
At the screening I attended, someone a few rows behind couldn’t hack it and walked out after a few minutes. Which is a credit to first-time feature director Kiah Roache-Turner, who...

On the red carpet for the premiere of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2015, filmmaker George Lucas -- who sold "Star Wars" to Disney in 2012 -- was relaxed and composed. He talked to reporters, and spoke dismissively of "Star Wars," seemingly over it all, and having washed his hands of the massive media empire he created.
Lucas mentioned that he was making new movies in his spare time, but that they were personal, weird, abstract shorts that no one would ever be allowed to see. After helping to pioneer a new wave of over-moneyed Hollywood glut, Lucas wanted to remind people that he was, after all, a filmmaker. It seems that after decades of having to shepherd the "Star Wars" media empire, he could get back to the low-budget college-level shorts he always wanted to make.
Indeed, Lucas has always been clear about the sort of movie he always wanted to make.

Katharina Sporrer’s abducted runaway bride is credible but the rest of the cast are so stilted it sounds more like a radio play than a film
This claustrophobic thriller takes place almost entirely in the boot of a rented car moving down an empty Texas highway. Bride Amanda (Katharina Sporrer), still in her floofy white wedding dress, is trapped inside the vehicle, having been kidnapped at the parking garage where she was dropping off the rented car she used to run away from her own wedding. Luckily for both her and the film, she has her mobile phone to hand and manages to make some calls, first to what she thinks is emergency services, only to realise she’s actually speaking to her kidnapper (Caspar Phillipson). Who doesn’t hate it when that happens?

Cannes 2024 was a life-changing journey for Indian production designer-turned actor Anasuya Sengupta who won best actress at the festival’s Un Certain Regard strand for “The Shameless.”
Sengupta made her acting debut alongside several of her friends in Anjan Dutt’s music-themed “Madly Bangali” (2009) and served as director’s assistant to Claire McCarthy in Australian production “The Waiting City” the same year. Kolkata native, Sengupta then moved to Mumbai, home to the vast Bollywood industry. She wasn’t impressed by Bollywood and became a noted production designer and artist instead. Her credits in that field include Netflix’s “Selection Day” and “Ray” and feature films “Chippa” and “Good Morning Sunshine.” Acting stayed alive in the shape of the occasional commercial or short film.

The Oscar-winning film-maker discusses his documentary about the legendary puppeteer and his unwavering desire to experiment
Before he became the world’s most famous puppeteer – the man responsible for The Muppets and Big Bird; and turning David Bowie into the Goblin King in Labyrinth – Jim Henson was an experimental film-maker.
In his Oscar-nominated 1965 short, Time Piece, Henson stars as a man transcending time and space, the percussive beats of ticking clocks, heartbeats and other machinery creating the rhythms for the film’s montage. In a film that takes cues from Georges Méliès and Dziga Vertov, Henson goes from playing hospital patient to Tarzan to George Washington. He was a man who could seemingly be anyone, and do anything, much like Henson himself.

John Rosman’s effective debut intertwines the lives of a woman escaping a black-site facility and a woman hired to contain the outbreak
Amid the dumper-truck of post-Covid lockdown-inspired films, very few take disease and pandemics themselves as their central focus. So John Rosman’s stripped-back but effective debut is a sobering flashback to those incubative early days, its title punning its title punning on the microbe that asymptomatic protagonist Jessica (Hayley Erin) is carrying on her person, as well as her hopes for a fresh start, unharassed by government spooks, north of the Canadian border.
All we know at the start is that blood-splattered Jessica has just escaped imprisonment in some black-site facility. She bundles herself into a pickup heading north, which luckily belongs to kindly farmer Frank (Blaine Palmer), who sends her on her way with a new jacket and a rucksack full of tinned food. Gdh 559’s How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, already the biggest film at the Thai box office in 2024, has now surpassed 2 million admissions in Indonesia, making it the second biggest Asian title at the Indonesian box office of all time.
