The second Grand Slam tournament on the tennis calendar features the world’s best players competing on the red clay courts of Roland-Garros for the French Open in Paris May 26-June 9. Novak Djokovic (pictured above) seeks a second straight (and fourth overall) French Open title, while 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal is likely playing in his final Roland-Garros event. Nadal faces a tough first-round opponent in No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany. Other contenders include 2024 Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner and 2023 Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, though both have struggled with injuries of late. On the women’s side, Poland’s Iga Świątek is the clear favorite as she tries for three consecutive French Open wins. She’ll face the likes of two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka and reigning US Open winner Coco Gauff. Tennis Channel, Peacock and NBC combine to televise and stream the tournament. NBC’s coverage also streams on NBCSports.

Elena Rybakina finished off her week at the 2024 Brisbane International in a strong way and she's not looking to stop as she will play the Adelaide International next week.
Elena Rybakina had a really strong week in Brisbane, which saw her ultimately win the trophy by beating Aryna Sabalenka. While some might think that she would take a week off after that triumph, Rybakina is keen on actually playing.
There are a few reasons for that but the nature of her week in Brisbane is certainly the most significant one. She played five matches in 5 consecutive days, but none of the matches were particularly taxing.
A 6-4 6-1 win in the first round, followed by a 6-1 6-0 win in the second round, followed by a win by retirement, and then the final two matches being equally impressive 6-3, 6-2, and 6-0, 6-3.

Aryna Sabalenka didn't play a great Brisbane International final against Elena Rybakina, and she jokingly blamed her team for the loss.
Sabalenka and Rybakina know each other well, having played against each other a few times already on the Wta Tour. The Belarusian has generally had the upper hand in the past and won the most important match between them at last year's Australian Open to win her maiden Grand Slam trophy.
Even so, Rybakina won a few herself, but still it was Sabalenka who won in the most recent two meetings prior to this one. The best demonstration of Rybakina fighting back in this matchup is with her record in the finals.
Last year's Indian Wells final was a big match, and Rybakina won that one. Now, this one in Brisbane was another final and Rybakina won that one as well. It was a pretty one-sided affair, as Sabalenka never really found her rhythm.

The first Grand Slam tournament of the 2024 season is on the horizon, and the entry list for the women's edition of the Australian Open has been released.
Running from January 14th to 28th, next year's Australian Open will have a historic Sunday start. One hundred twenty-eight women will compete in the biggest party of Australian summer, but only one player will be lucky enough to emerge from the fortnight with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.
The Australian Open is played on outdoor hard courts at its famed home - Melbourne Park. It's been ten years since there was a successful title defense in the women's tournament, so is that trend likely to continue, or will Belarus Aryna Sabalenka defend the crown she won 12 months ago?

Elena Rybakina absolutely outplayed Aryna Sabalenka in the 2024 Brisbane International final to win her first title of the season.
It was a highly-anticipated final between the two highest-seeded players at the Wta 500 tournament in Brisbane. They were both in a great form prior to the match, beating their opponents without much troubles.
Both were yet to lose a set in Brisbane and even though Sabalenka downplayed the importance of the match before it started, as she wanted to focus on the Australian Open, it was clear that she wanted to win.
That became obvious with every rally played because, shockingly, her opponent just kept outplaying her over and over and over again. Of course, the fact that Rybakina was able to beat Sabalenka was not surprising, but the way in which she did it was.

Aryna Sabalenka will take on Elena Rybakina in the 2024 Brisbane International final, but for her, it's all about the Australian Open and not this match specifically.
At first glance, you might think that it's a weird way of thinking about it, but it kind of makes sense. She is out for the big trophies, and while this is a Wta final, it's not the most important event, which she's going to play in the coming weeks.
Still, a final is a final, and of course, Sabalenka, like any other competitor, will want to win the event, but the most important part of this week was playing and winning matches, which means finding the rhythm before Melbourne.
After all, it's a preparation for the Australian Open, which is the event that counts for many top players. Still, the final will be played against Rybakina, and it's a rivalry, and it's a trophy,...

Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina were on fire this week at the 2024 Brisbane International, but who will actually win the title?
Elena Rybakina never came close to losing a set this week in Brisbane, beating several players comfortably. It was a super impressive showing from a player who generally does really well in Australia.
This exact same thing can be said of Aryna Sabalenka, though. She, too, was very impressive this week, winning several matches easily.

Aryna Sabalenka played yet another solid match at the 2024 Brisbane International to book the final after beating Victoria Azarenka.
It was all Belarus in Brisbane today as Sabalenka took on compatriot Azarenka for a spot in the final of the event. Earlier in the day, Elena Rybakina won her match and advanced to the final, which will now be a repeat of last year's Australian Open final.
That's a great Wta Final to start to year and one that could go either way. When it comes to this one it was far more competitive than Sabalenka's previous match. Part of that is because Azarenka herself played a pretty decent match.
The first set saw Sabalenka jump out to an early lead and simply crush Azarenka from that point on with her tremendous power. She dominated on her serve and didn't allow any break points.

Elena Rybakina is into her first Wta final of the 2024 season, after another dominant performance at the 2024 Brisbane International.
If there was one word to summarize the first week of women's tennis, it wouldn't be too difficult to find that word, as it would simply be dominance. All Top 4 players on the Wta Tour are one level above their competition, and each of them is proving it in every match they play.
Iga Swiatek managed to send her country to the United Cup final, Aryna Sabalenka has been more than dominant with her performances in Brisbane, and Coco Gauff is steamrolling past everyone in Auckland.
And another player who wants to join this list of players, and is doing it so far, is the world no. 4, Elena Rybakina. She already managed to reach the final of the 2024 Brisbane International, this time after beating teenage prodigy Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic.

Aryna Sabalenka has been on fire down under so far, and it continued against Daria Kasatkina as she won in two simple sets.
Sabalenka was absolutely amazing in Australia last year so her doing well this year isn't such a huge surprise. After all, she won the Australian Open last year due to the way the courts fit her super-aggressive style.
Very few players can match the power she produces in most rallies. That's why people compared her to Serena when she showed up on the Tour. Kasatkina has had that problem with Sabalenka in the past, and it certainly was a problem today on these courts.
The first set clearly illustrated that as the Belarusian took the opening set 6-1. Funnily enough, the game she lost was on her serve, so Kasatkina was broken three times in the opening set, obviously far too many. Sabalenka simply attacked every ball with great success.

Iga Swiatek joined an illustrious list of former Wta World No. 1s who scored at least three-digit match wins during their reign at the top of the rankings.
The Pole is the ninth woman ranked as a World No. 1 to score 100 wins at tour level, following her comprehensive straight sets win over China's Qinwen Zheng at the United Cup. The victory propelled her country into the semifinal of the mixed-gender team tournament.
Poland, who entered this year's competition as the odds-on favorites thanks to the exploits of Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz, are two ties away from winning the tournament. They face France in the semis on Saturday at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.
Swiatek, who has yet to lose a match in 2024, has now forged a 14-match winning streak in singles dating back to last year's China Open. She has expanded this exclusive centurion club, which includes Wta legends like Chris Evert,...

Aryna Sabalenka has been absolutely on fire to start the year, so what can Daria Kasatkina do to stop her at the 2024 Brisbane International?
Last year's Australian summer was amazing for Aryna Sabalenka who won her maiden Grand Slam at last year's event. It was the start of an amazing season for her and she's hopeful that it continues this year.
If the start is anything to go by, then it certainly will be, as Sabalenka has been on fire. Impressive wins in Brisbane sent her to the quarter-final, where she'll face Daria Kasatkina, who also played pretty solid tennis.
Can the Russian take out the Sabalenka remains in question, though. Sabalenka is not the type of player she likes to play because she doesn't really have the power to match her.
Head-to-head:
She's beaten her before, so it's not like it's impossible, but generally, it was the Belarusian who dominated the matchup.

Coco Gauff is cruising through her 2024 Asb Classic Auckland title defense, and her next stop is Varvara Gracheva, who can be a tricky opponent.
Coco Gauff most probably won't be scared of Varvara Gracheva, but the French player has demonstrated an ability to surprise before. As great as the teenage American is, her streakiness is still present, and weird things happen in tennis all the time.
So far, Gauff has been quite good. She dropped only three games against Brenda Fruhvirtova, which was very impressive. She bested Claire Liu in the match before that, and allowed her six games, which is also pretty strong.
Gracheva will be the biggest test so far because she also bested some solid players. But can she beat the 2023 US Open champion is the real question?
Head-to-head:
We've never seen this matchup play out on the court before, which is unfortunate, but there are some...

Aryna Sabalenka won the 2023 Australian Open, and she started this year on a high note as well, putting forward early candidacy to do so again.
Sabalenka had a fantastic 2023 campaign, which began in Melbourne with the Australian Open trophy. She's looking even better this year with some amazing early performances at the 2024 Brisbane International.
She played well in Abu Dhabi at the World Tennis League and looks even better in Brisbane. A dominant first win was followed up by yet another crushing win over Lin Zhu.
The match actually started with an early break for the Chinese player, which is funny because that's the only game she would win in the match.
Sabalenka broke back immediately and then added another break and then another, and it was just not a pretty sight if you are a fan of Zhu. The Belarusian just crushed her from the baseline with her raw power,...

Elena Rybakina, like many other top players on the Wta Tour, is on fire early in 2024, reaching the Brisbane International quarterfinals.
It seems like all the top players prepared well for the new season, as they are not only winning matches, but literally destroying their opponents along the way. Aryna Sabalenka showed it, and Coco Gauff followed her.
Now, the 2022 Wimbledon champion adds her name to the list of players who dominated in a match in an incredible fashion. In her first match in Brisbane, the Kazakhstani player won in two sets, but a 6-4, 6-1 win wasn't considered as dominant as some of her other rivals.
But what Rybakina did in the second round was quite incredible, especially given that Elise Mertens, who she took on, was on a six-match winning streak after winning the Tunisia Open last year.

Aryna Sabalenka will want to challenge Iga Swiatek in 2024 again, and she started her charge well at the 2024 Brisbane International, beating Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets.
The Polish player already got to show her qualities in 2024, and she did show that her dominance is nowhere to be gone. While Swiatek competes at the United Cup, the Belarusian plays at the Wta 500 tournament in Brisbane as the top seed, and she showed that she means business already in her first match at the event.

Sofia Kenin will return to action at the Hobart International on January 8 as the American player aims to bounce back quickly from a disappointing start to 2024.
Kenin had high hopes for progression at her first tournament entry of 2024 at the Brisbane International. However, things did not go as planned for the 25-year-old after she was beaten in the second round by Arina Rodionova in a straight sets defeat).
The loss came as a shock for the American player, especially after she ended 2023 with some impressive form. In the latter stages of last year's campaign, Kenin beat Caroline Garcia and also defeated world number two Aryna Sabalenka during the exhibition event, the World Tennis League.

Coco Gauff's coach, Brad Gilbert has given one principal reason for the teenager's historic US Open triumph.
Gauff has recently admitted that she felt she needed to win a Grand Slam as a teenager. Last year's US Open represented one of the final opportunities for the American to achieve that dream.
Veteran coach Gilbert joined Gauff's team in August 2023. He has previously worked with big names such as Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori. Agassi won 6 of his Grand Slams under Gilbert's guidance.
Gilbert received much praise for his role in Gauff's triumph at Flushing Meadows. Although all the other current and previous members of Gauff's team also deserve a lot of credit for their roles in her development to that point, Gilbert did seem to help the teenager's mentality.
Now, Gilbert has spoken about his work with the US Open champion. As well as confirming...

Iga Swiatek's second stint as World No. 1 shows no signs of ending anytime soon as the Pole built a cushion over her closest challenger, Aryna Sabalenka.
After last year's US Open, Swiatek had relinquished the World No. 1 ranking to Sabalenka. But the Belarusian's reign lasted for just eight weeks before the 22-year-old Warsaw native bounced back spectacularly with title wins in Beijing and Cancun.
The victory over Sabalenka at the Wta Finals semifinal proved critical for Swiatek because she would demolish Jessica Pegula in the final to reclaim the No. 1 ranking. Swiatek pipped Sabalenka to the top by just 245 points in the year-end rankings.
But at the turn of the year, Swiatek added 210 points this week thanks to a new Wta rule of points allocation. Previously, a Wta player's ranking was determined by the results in a maximum of 16 tournaments and the Wta Finals if they qualified.

Coco Gauff and Ben Shelton's superb seasons have led to both players being handed the same honour on a joint basis.

Coco Gauff broke out as a teenager, and she felt the pressure of that because she thought she needed to win a Grand Slam while still a teenager.
Coco Gauff essentially broke out as a 15-year-old kid at Wimbledon by beating Venus Williams of all people at the event. Oddly enough, even back then, it felt like a passing of the torch kind of moment, and here we are a few years later with Gauff way ahead of Williams in the Wta Rankings.
She'd beat her once more at the event and establish herself as a pretty good player among the elite. She wasn't at the top but slowly worked her way there over the next two years. And it wasn't enough.

Aryna Sabalenka had her best season by far in 2023, and quite a few things contributed to that, including a huge change in mindset.
Sabalenka has been one of the better players for a few years, but things never quite clicked enough. Often compared to Serena Williams, the Belarusian lacked the consistency of the legendary player.
Sure, she could hit a tennis ball through a hole on any given day, but if you miss more than you hit, you're going to have a problem.
Eventually, she changed her approach with several things, unlocking consistency and precision on the serve, which completely changed her career trajectory.
She won a maiden Grand Slam trophy and then put together an impressive year, arguably the most consistent of all the top players, which is particularly impressive considering her previous track record.

The 2024 Brisbane International will be one of the most exciting Wta 500 tournaments of the season, and the tournament's draw has been released.

The 2024 Australian Open is set for a historic Sunday start and the prize money on offer will also be historic, with another increase compared to last year.

Karolina Muchova is one of the most talented players on the Wta Tour, but the world no. 8 won't compete at the 2024 Australian Open as she withdrew weeks before the start.
There's no doubt about the talent that the Czech player possesses. She defeated Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Roland Garros final this year, and after that, Muchova even pushed Iga Swiatek to the limit, ultimately losing in the final.
For a very long time now, the Czech has been described as a talented player that never got to show her full potential, and unfortunately, that seems to be the theme also early in 2024.
After she was forced to withdraw from her maiden Wta Finals earlier this year, Muchova hoped to fully recover during the off-season, but as she disclosed in an Instagram post, the wrist pain returned in the middle of her preparations for the new season.

Swiatek was ranked World No. 1 for 75 straight weeks from April 2022 - following the retirement of Ashleigh Barty - to September 2023. A fourth-round defeat to Jelena Ostapenko at the US Open saw the Polish star relinquish her spot to Aryna Sabalenka.
In the aftermath of that tournament in New York, she revealed that her sense of purpose has always been to develop as a player and person, not necessarily chase points or rankings. That bit was certainly true because the 22-year-old played with freedom and energy in the autumn.
Swiatek went on a winning spree at the backend of last season, winning titles in Beijing and Cancun - the latter being the most dominant run to a Wta Finals title in history. Reflecting on her 2023 season,...

Iga Swiatek enters 2024 as the top-ranked player in the world and is likely to dominate again.
She didn't quite dominate 2023 as opposed to the previous year, but she did enough to win a Grand Slam, finishing as number one and winning the Wta Player of the Year award.
Her tennis didn't go back, but her opposition stepped up considerably. Players like Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and others improved their level and gave Swiatek more trouble, and yet she ended up as number one.
That sort of competition will help her develop as a player, which she has always explained is the goal. Milestones are important, but the goal is to improve as a player.
In 2024, she will kick off at the United Cup, where she'll suit up for Poland. Already in Australia, Swiatek was asked to predict which player would give her the most trouble next year.
It's honestly too hard to predict.

Iga Swiatek won only one Grand Slam in 2023, but she'll win at least one in 2024, according to former pro Alex Corretja.
Corretja was a pretty good tennis player during his peak, making the Roland Garros final, among other things. He never won the event, unlike Iga Swiatek, who has three trophies from the French capital.
The most recent one came earlier this year as she bested Karolina Muchova in a match where she was down a break in the final set. According to the Polish player, who faced strong opposition from all sides this year, it was the hardest to win.
It wasn't a bad year for her despite winning only one Grand Slam, as she still finished as number one in the world after a title-winning run at the Wta Finals. Despite the opposition catching up on Swiatek, Corretja still feels she's the player to beat, per a recent interview with Eurosport.

Some of the players can't play under their flags at the 2024 Australian Open, and there's a very specific reason for that.
Some players were assigned a white flag next to their name, or no flag, and that was not by mistake. It is meant to serve as a neutral banner for Russian and Belarusian tennis players competing at the event.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in which Belarus is a key staging area, has seen sporting sanctions brought against its athletes. For instance, at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Russian and Belarusian players were banned from playing the tournament in a controversial move.
Tennis Australia (Ta) has not issued any restrictions - or at least on par with the All England Club - for Russian and Belarusian athletes for the forthcoming tournament set to commence on January 14, 2024.
