A frenetic mash-up of 30’s pulp and 70’s kung fu thrillers, John Carpenter’s action comedy stars Kurt Russell as Jack Burton, a winking caricature of every musclebound hero from Doc Savage to Indiana Jones. The film was hampered in its rush to beat Eddie Murphy’s similarly-styled The Golden Child to the box office but has since worked its way into a long line of cult favorites.

John Carpenter, the filmmaker behind classic comedy adventure "Big Trouble In Little China" (1986), starring Kurt Russell as 'Jack Burton', isn't too keen about the upcoming sequel to his film, after being left out of the creative process. "They want a movie with Dwayne Johnson," said Carpenter. "that's what they want. So they just picked that title.":
"You can't remake a classic like that, so what we're planning to do is we're going to continue the story," said sequel producer Hiram Garcia.
"We're going to continue the universe of 'Big Trouble in Little China'.
"Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there's only one person that could ever play Jack Burton...
"...so Dwayne would never try and play that character..."
Although he has been sidelined from the upcoming production, Carpenter continues to script new adventures of his "Big Trouble" creations,...

As most of you probably know by now, Dwayne Johnson is developing a new Big Trouble in Little China film that will continue the story of John Carpenter’s 1986 classic. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Carpenter will be a part of it.
There’s a chance for Kurt Russell to reprise his role as ol’ Jack Burton, but it’s too early to tell if he will be involved or not. I’ll just say it would be stupid if they didn’t use him, and there’s really no point in making the film if he isn’t included in the story.
In a recent interview with USA Today, Russell said that he “probably won’t be” in the upcoming sequel, but he enjoyed working with Johnson in the Fast and Furious franchise, which means if they did ask him he’d probably do it:
“He's just a really good guy.

Yep, Dwayne Johnson is still slowly developing a reboot of the 1983 cult classic Big Trouble in Little China. It’s been reported that the film will be a continuation of the story that was started with the original Kurt Russell film.
Now, I would be more excited about this movie if director John Carpenter and Russell were involved with the development. But, Carpenter had a few very blunt and harsh words about the film project. As you might imagine, he’s not happy about it. Johnson did say he wanted to bring Carpenter in on the project, but it looks like that’s not going to be the case.
While talking with CinemaBlend, Carpenter slammed the Big Trouble in Little China sequel saying:
“They want a movie with Dwayne Johnson. That’s what they want. So they just picked that title. They don’t give a shit about me and my movie.

A few years ago it was announced that Dwayne Johnson would star in a remake of John Carpenter's classic 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China. Well, it turns out that this film won't be a remake. Instead, it will be a continuation of the story that was launched with the first film, which starred Kurt Russell.
The news comes from one of the producers of the film, Hiram Garcia, and while talking to Collider about the movie, he said:
"There’s a lot of things going on with [Big Trouble in Little China]. We are in the process of developing that, and let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake Big Trouble in Little China.
