Charli Xcx enlists an all-cool cast — including Rachel Sennott, Chloë Sevigny, Emma Chamberlain, and Julia Fox — for her new video for “360,” the latest track off the singer’s upcoming LP Brat.

Charli Xcx is back with “360,” her latest single and the opening track of her forthcoming album, Brat.
Featuring a percussive synth-scape that’s a signature sound of Brat producer A. G. Cook, “360” sees Charli deliver an infectious melody with crisp, hyperpop vocals. On the second verse, she name-drops Cook (“You gon’ jump if A. G. made it”) and for the chorus, she sings a memorable refrain shouting out her good friend, Julia Fox, with lyrics, “When you’re in the mirror, do you like what you see?/ When you’re in the mirror, you’re just looking at me/ I’m everywhere, I’m so Julia.”
Arriving alongside the single is a cinematic music video starting with a sketch about Charli attending a meeting to “fulfill the prophecy of finding a new ‘Hot Internet Girl,'” along with Rachel Sennott, Chloe Cherry, Richie Shazam, Gabbriette (from the band Nasty Cherry), and Fox herself.

If the Britpop movement of the 1990s was defined by its brash celebration of authenticity, anti-commercialism, and, well, Britishness, the hyperpop movement of the 2010s was almost the total inverse. Characterized by heavy audio manipulation, cartoonishly catchy pop hooks, and gleefully artificial alter egos, the music released on A.G. Cook’s PC Music label openly embraced synthetic sounds and consumerist aesthetics. The title of Cook’s third album, Britpop, places these two movements in conversation with one another.
All music exists as a response to something that came before. Case in point: Britpop developed in the wake of the U.S. grunge explosion, which itself was a reaction to the extravagance of hair metal. That sort of push and pull is something that Cook has played with before—most notably on his 2020 cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’s “Crimson and Clover,” which Cook reimagined with massive saw synths and fuzzed-out guitars.

At the root of “radical behaviorism,” a concept popularized by psychologist B.F. Skinner in the 1970s, is the belief that all behavior is the result of external conditioning and can thus be controlled. Think Pavlov’s dog. The title of Dua Lipa’s third studio album, Radical Optimism, nods to Skinner’s concept, but the British pop singer’s conviction that finding joy amid the chaos of life is simply a choice is more akin to that of a self-help book or the principles of Burning Man, which emphasize an empowering sense of self-reliance and expression.
“I know the mind is quick to throw away the moment,” Lipa pronounces on “Falling Forever,” a rollicking barnburner about keeping the lovelights aflame. She dispenses similar nuggets of wisdom and affirmations—often directed at herself—throughout Radical Optimism, acknowledging her control issues on “Whatcha Doing” while at the same time finding a bit...

Caroline Polachek has unveiled “Starburned and Unkissed,” her original contribution to the absolutely stacked soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun and A24’s new film, I Saw the TV Glow.
Produced by Polachek alongside A.G. Cook, “Starburned and Unkissed” is cathartic, noisy, and anthemic — the distorted electric guitar that drops in the song’s chorus is so visceral that it feels alien to the sun-soaked ecstasy of Polachek’s last album, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. A press release notes that “Starburned and Unkissed” features prominently in the film, and the song’s grungy hue mirrors the film’s eerie, psychological horror backdrop. Stream the track below.
“Starburned and Unkissed” is the third single released in advance of I Saw the TV Glow soundtrack following Florist’s “Riding Around in the Dark” and yeule’s rendition of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen-Year Old Girl.” The 15-song Ost...

A. G. Cook began 2024 by releasing a single, “Silver Needle Golden Thread,” followed by the announcement of his third studio album, Britpop. Now, the PC Music founder is back with the album’s title track, “Britpop,” featuring Charli Xcx.
Opening with Charli delivering the refrain “Brit/ Brit like Britpop,” the track evolves in typical Cook fashion, introducing layers of shimmery, bubbling synths which eventually blossom into a full-fledged dance arrangement. Around the midway point, Charli’s vocals drop out and an intricate bass groove takes their place. For the outro, the refrain returns as a distorted echo, roaring over the beat like the whistle of an approaching train. Stream the track below.
Britpop as a whole is due on May 10th via New Alias, arriving as a 24-song project encompassing three different chapters: Past, Present, and Future. Inspired by the time he spent in the Montana hometown of his girlfriend,...

Over the past decade, A. G. Cook’s hyperpop label PC Music has helped change the face of pop. And yet, one of the company’s final new releases, British singer Hannah Diamond’s Perfect Picture, is representative of its position squarely outside of the mainstream.
Diamond is a meta-pop star for the 21st century, a visual artist whose heavily retouched images dovetail with the content of her music. She’s certainly committed to the bit, creating club-friendly bangers with unpredictable melodies and vocals that are chopped up into a robotic stutter that suggests the imperfection of humanity. Lyrically, the songs on Perfect Picture find her in a constant state of anxiety about her looks and public perception.
On the title track, the word “click” has a clever double meaning: the act of taking a photo and strangers viewing it (and judging) it. Diamond recognizes the commodification of our insecurities,...

The Elizabeth Banks-produced sex comedy Bottoms has hit theaters, and now, its soundtrack featuring music by Charli Xcx and composer Leo Birenberg is out, too. Stream the album below.
Spanning 27 songs, the Bottoms soundtrack features music co-composed by Charli and Birenberg, ranging in style and intensity. Tracks like “Bottoms” and “Sex with Mrs. Callahan” bring the upbeat, bit-crushed pop maximalism that you’d hope for from a Charli tune. Meanwhile, slower, more ambient tracks like “Josie and Juvie” and “Study Buddies” send the listener floating off into a vibey, ethereal atmosphere.
The soundtrack is augmented by additional production from The 1975’s George Daniel and longtime Charli collaborator A. G. Cook. Some Charli-heavy songs, like “Yes No Okay,” even feature guitar distortion and the rhythmic scratches, swooshes, and scrapes reminiscent of Cook’s 7G era, with Charli’s vocals carrying the perfect attitude over top. Charli Xcx reflects on the sweetness of a prohibited love on her new track “Every Rule.” The pop ballad follows Charli as she sings about meeting with a love interest already in a relationship — someone she’s willing to break rules for.
“Straight away we started falling/Conversation never boring,” she sings on the track produced by A.G. Cook and Oneohtrix Point Never. “When your lips brushed up against my skin/All I wanted was to let you in.” (Charli is no stranger to singing about rule-breaking. Charli Xcx has long been one of pop’s most galaxy-brained writers and performers, but she’s ready for what she calls her “main pop-girl moment.” With her upcoming album, Crash (due March 18), she presents a brilliant case: It’s an airtight pop project full of top-notch hooks that also functions as a quick tour through the past couple of decades of the genre. Like everything the artist does, Crash is, first and foremost, fun. “I think the people who know me and my work know that 50 percent of the time I’m entirely serious,...

100 Gecs bust out the wizard robes in the new video for “Mememe,” the first offering the from the duo’s highly-anticipated next album, 10000 Gecs.
“Mememe” finds 100 Gecs delivering ska-style verses and sky-high arena rock hooks, though the entire song is characteristically peppered with genre-exploding flourishes. The “Mememe” visual is equally over-the-top, shot largely on a fish eye lens — often from the perspective of inside someone’s mouth — as 100 Gecs’ Dylan Brady and Laura Les dance and jump around a sunny field in luxurious wizard robes.

It was after 1 a.m. by the time Sophie arrived onstage to close out PC Music’s SXSW showcase in March 2015, but you’d have been playing yourself if you left before her set. PC Music was one of the hottest topics of discussion in Austin that year — a mysterious, mischievous U.K. dance music collective that was either reinventing pop or destroying it, depending on whom you asked. Devoted ravers and curious passersby alike filed into the Empire Garage that Thursday night to see what SoundCloud jesters like A.G. Cook...

Hyperpop heroes 100 Gecs get back at Santa Claus for a poor showing of presents on their new holiday song, “Sympathy 4 the Grinch.”

Laura Les and Dylan Brady share vocal duties, crafting the story of a person so disappointed with their gifts that they find Santa and steal his whole bag: “Never gave me a goddamn thing that I want,...

To say Charli Xcx took a six-year “break” between her sophomore breakthrough Sucker and her latest, Charli, is a little misleading. Over those six years, the “Blame It on Your Love” singer released two lauded mixtapes, an Ep, and a few singles. She also stayed busy writing songs for other artists, including Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s Number One hit “Señorita” and spent most of 2018 opening for Taylor Swift on the star’s global Reputation trek. Ending her album dry spell meant that Charli Xcx, now 27, had to get...

It’s been three and a half years since Charli Xcx dropped her sophomore album, “Sucker,” and while she hasn’t released an official third full-length, she’s dropped a boxed set’s worth of songs via two mixtapes (“Pop 2” and “Number 1 Angel”), an Ep (“Vroom Vroom”), several singles (including the hit “Boys”), and so many guest appearances — Rita Ora’s “Girls” with Cardi B and Bebe Rexha, Tove Lo’s “Bitches” with Alma, Icona Pop and Elliphant, as well as Lil Xan’s “Moonlight” — that it would take all day to recap them all. And while a third album remains unscheduled, she’ll be releasing songs throughout the summer and two of them arrived this morning: “Focus” and “No Angel.” The new tracks come on the heels of “5 in the Morning,” which dropped in May.
