Paramount+ is expanding in Asia. The streaming service will debut in Japan on Dec. 1 in partnership with Japanese cable provider J:Com and premium pay television channel WowWow, Paramount+ announced Tuesday.
However, Paramount+ won’t be available as a stand-alone streaming service as it is in North America. Instead, the streamer’s movies and TV shows will be available to as part of the on-demand offerings on J:com and WowWow.
It’s the Paramount-owned streamer’s second Asian market, following its launch in South Korea in 2022. The partnership is an expansion of existing agreements between Paramount, J:com and WowWow.
Paramount+ shows including “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will be available for the first time in Japan. The deal also includes movies and TV from Paramount’s back catalogue, such as “Mission: Impossible,” “Bumblebee” and “Gi-Joe” from Paramount pictures, CBS hits like “NCIS,” and Showtime...

Paramount+ has finally found a home in Japan. Paramount revealed Wednesday that the streaming service and its library will launch in the Japan market on Dec. 1 as a no-additional-cost addition to the on-demand services of local operators J:com and Wowow. J:com is one of Japan’s top cable television operators and broadband internet providers, while Wowow is the longstanding leading premium pay channel in the market.
The deal marks the second launch for Paramount+ in East Asia, following a similar arrangement set up last year in South Korea with TVing, the streaming service controlled by Korean entertainment giant Cj Enm. Parmount+ also launched in Australia via a partnership in August 2021. In Europe, the service is available through partnerships with Sky in Italy, the U.K., and Germany, and with Canal+ in France.

The Paramount+ streaming service will launch in Japan in December as a free-of-charge addition to cable and internet provider J:com’s platform and to pay-tv service Wowow.
Paramount+ originals including “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will be available at the launch of the service and for the first time in Japan.
Japan will be the second country in East Asia where the service becomes available, following a launch in South Korea in June last year. That launch followed a strategic partnership between Paramount and dominant Korean entertainment group Cj Enm and sees Paramount+ operate as a free tier on local streaming platform TVing. Elsewhere the service runs through partnerships with Sky in Italy, the U.K., and Germany and with Canal+ in France.

Paramount+ has launched its first mobile-only subscription plan.
Beginning in April, subs in Mexico and Brazil will be able to access the ‘Basic Plan’ for around $2.80 and $4.20 per month respectively.
Paramount+ mobile will have the same catalog as the streamer, with the likes of Yellowstone, Yellowjackets, 1923 and Star Trek: Picard available from launch.
Marco Nobili, Executive Vice President and International General Manager for Paramount+, said the mobile plan is “part of our broader strategy to scale Paramount+.”
“With mobile entertainment consumption increasing around the world, a mobile-only option will make our slate of programming more accessible to our audiences in mobile-first countries,” he added.
According to studies quoted by Paramount, more than 50% of the “online population” in both Mexico and Brazil use the smartphone to access streaming services for watching on-demand TV and movies.
The move comes after a period in which Paramount+ was rolled out to dozens of territories outside the U.

Ampere Report Paints Bleak Five-Year Picture for Entertainment Industry
According to an updated study by U.K. firm Ampere Analysis, the Covid-19 crisis will cost the global entertainment industry $160 billion over the next five years.

Prime Video Direct (Pvd), Amazon’s self-service program for studios, distributors, and content creators, has unveiled more than two dozen titles picked up from the 2018 Guadalajara Int’l Film Festival (Ficg) where it launched its Film Festival Stars program (Ffs) in the Latino market for the first time.
Introduced at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, the Ffs program offers cash bonuses and royalties to festival films seeking to self-distribute on Amazon Prime.
Prime Video Direct’s Film Festival Stars program addresses the fact that few festival films ever manage to secure full service distribution deals. The program gives them an opportunity to reach a broader premium audience.
Starting Monday Oct. 15, these 27 titles will be available on Prime Video in Mexico, including Ficg Jury Prize winner for Ibero-American Narrative Feature, Spanish dramedy “Vivir y Otras Ficciones” (“Living and other Fictions”) and Ficg Jury Prize Ibero-American doc winner, “El Espanto” (“The Dread”) from Argentina.
