Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Michel Franco’s Memory, the thoughtful drama that won Peter Sarsgaard the Best Actor Volpi Cup in Venice earlier this year. Franco directs and wrote the movie that also stars Jessica Chastain.
The latter plays Sylvia, a social worker who leads a simple and structured life: her daughter, her job, her AA meetings. This is blown open when Saul (Sarsgaard), who suffers from bouts of dementia, follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise encounter will profoundly impact both of them as they open the door to the past.
In Venice, Franco told the press corps, “My biggest fear is losing my mind, which is what brought me to (the subject of) dementia. If you don’t know who you are, are you still yourself? It triggers many questions for a scriptwriter.”

Jessica Chastain plays a social worker and single mother whose structured life is thrown into chaos when a young man dealing with dementia, played by Peter Sarsgaard, follows her home from their high school reunion in the trailer for Memory, which dropped Tuesday.
Michel Franco’s austere family drama about trauma and connection has Chastain playing Sylvia. Her regimented days at first revolve around her daughter, her job and her AA meetings, but are disrupted when the surprise encounter with Saul (Sarsgaard) opens a door to past memories and childhood experiences that surface like raw nerves.

While Jessica Chastain and director Michel Franco walked carpets and conducted press conferences at the Venice Film Festival, where they were feted for their film Memory, the duo were also holding a little secret close to their vests.
Prior to Memory hitting Venice, Chastain and Franco completed shooting a feature this summer in San Francisco.
Dreams stars Chastain along with Mexican ballet dancer and actor Isaac Hernandez and Rupert Friend, the British actor who has become a Wes Anderson featured player of late.
Details are scarce but the story involves a possible forbidden romance between a woman, who works for an arts foundation, and a ballet dancer. Franco wrote the script and is directing.
The movie shot in San Francisco with a budget of around $3 million, according to sources. It did have a SAG-AFTRA waiver allowing it to shoot during the actors strike.

Location, Location, Location. After the affluent neighbourhood somewhere in Mexico with New Order, the wasteland of Acapulco with Sundown and more recently, the New York City scapes in the Venice-tipped Memory, it appears that Michel Franco might be setting up shop in San Francisco for a project titled Dreams. Producer Eréndira Núñez Larios and Yves Cape would re-team with Franco.
The project was once said to see Franco work with Jessica Chastain again – but that rumor was put to rest and it would be impossible if the project were to get greenlit. At this point we don’t know if this would be a false start, if this is a smaller scale project or if it is way too early but Production Weekly originally had this set as a July production start date.…...

During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s 2023 winter press tour, Paramount+ debuted new teaser art for the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which premieres on Feb. 16. During the panel about the series however, the team behind the series didn’t seem so sure that this would be the end.
“Who knows?” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said when asked about the ending of the series, with star Patrick Stewart saying that if the show could “maintain the work quality” of the first three seasons, he would be open to reappearing. He also noted that the storylines of the final season intentionally “leave doors open.”
The series stars Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, who he played for seven seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd also star.

We learned that Cannes and Venice winning filmmaker Michel Franco was possibly circling the country of Poland for his next project. Well, the filmmaker has indeed embarked on a new project but it isn’t in Eastern Europe but Brooklyn instead. Physically present for several in-person promotional activities for Sundown back in January and possibly being hands on as an executive producer for Jonah Feingold’s current sophomore feature in production (we interviewed the filmmaker for Dating and New York), the NYC staycation equates to a eighth feature film with some major talents in: Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard. There is no title yet for the under-the-radar project which could be produced by Eréndira Núñez Larios and Cristina Velasco, but we know that Chastain would hav signed up recently – she made the mention when she was doing the rounds for all the award galas related to The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Bleecker Street has landed North American rights to “Sundown,” a suspenseful drama about family and privilege.
Filmmaker Michel Franco (” After Lucia”) wrote and directed the movie, which will be released in theaters sometime in 2022.
“Sundown” — starring Tim Roth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Iazua Larios and Henry Goodman — follows a wealthy British family on a vacation abruptly cut short in Acapulco. When one relative disrupts the family’s tight-knit order, simmering tensions threaten to expose long-gestating rifts.
It premiered at Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival to solid reviews. Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge praised “Sundown,” calling it the “high-minded director’s most successful film to date.”
“‘Sundown’ is an intricate, unconventional puzzle — a mystery, complete with murder, in which the solution isn’t nearly so important as the process of putting it all together,” Debruge wrote in his review.
Franco says he hopes the movie sparks a dialogue.
