A topical historical drama depicting the creation of IVF; a paranoid thriller series starring Colman Domingo; a bracingly original crime musical, and awards contender, from Jacques Audiard; the second part of the final season of Cobra Kai; and a reverential big-screen adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning August Wilson play are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in November.
On Nov. 7, action and mystery drama Outer Banks returns to Netflix. The first half of season four ended with several cliff-hangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season. Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke. The cast have promised “craziness” so expect some more jaw-dropping revelations.

Colman Domingo plays a media pundit who stumbles on a murder he fears he’s being framed for in the trailer for The Madness, the upcoming conspiracy thriller from Netflix, that dropped on Monday.
“I got a bull’s eye on my back,” a paranoid Domingo, in the role of Muncie Daniels, says at one point in the fast-paced teaser after he visits a murder scene deep in the woods of the Poconos and finds he’s the only witness to a crime.
As the walls close in and he fears a set-up to make him take the fall, Daniels strives to reconnect with his estranged family — and his lost ideals — in order to clear his name. The eight-episode thriller, with the Emmy winner in the starring role, is set to bow on Netflix Nov. 28.
The ensemble cast for The Madness includes Marsha Stephanie Blake, Gabrielle Graham, John Ortiz, Tamsin Topolski and Thaddeus J.

As Emmy Award winner Colman Domingo heads toward his second consecutive Best Actor Oscar nomination, the “Sing Sing” star will likely dominate the holiday season Netflix charts with “The Madness.” The drama series with a juicy premise debuted its first teaser on Monday, one month before its streaming debut.
Domingo, an Oscar nominee this year for Netflix’s “Rustin” and an expected contender in 2025 for the A24 prison drama, stars as Mncie Daniels on the series “a political consultant-turned-tv pundit who may have lost his way in life.”
But wanderlust is the least of Muncie’s issues, as the Netflix plot description reveals: “While on a work sabbatical in the Poconos to write the great American novel, Muncie finds himself the only witness to the murder of a well-known white supremacist, and now he’s being framed for the crime. Plot: A man from the future, now trapped in the past, tries to live a lowkey life without disrupting predetermined events, oblivious to the consequences of his foolish actions.
Review: Traveling to the past is a risky business. If you’re not careful, the slightest mistake could alter the course of history, triggering a domino effect of events never intended. Your best strategy to survive the ordeal is to lay low, complete your mission, and return to your time. In Relax, I’m From the Future, Casper (Rhys Darby) thinks rules are malleable and gaming the system to live comfortably is worth the risk of upending the universe. He isn’t looking to harm anyone, quite the opposite. Still, Casper isn’t the brightest crayon in the box, and when things don’t work out as intended, he quickly discovers it takes more than one person to make a difference.

I’ve watched enough Doctor Who to know time is a complicated construct with rules fluctuating from one interpretation to the next. Thankfully, Rhys Darby’s Casper has time travel all figured out in Relax, I’m From the Future, a new time-traveling comedy that finally breaks the multiversal merry-go-round we’ve been riding for the past few years. In today’s exclusive Relax, I’m From the Future clip, Casper dismisses the Butterfly Effect and misinformation about multiple realities.
The scene finds Casper and Holly (Gabrielle Graham) discussing multiversal misnomers in a dimly lit diner over piping hot mugs of jitter juice. Casper explains how there’s only one reality, and that time is more like a mushy blob than anything we’ve seen in movies. Doc Brown lied to us, folks! Oh, the humanity! While branching paths in the timeline exist, they eventually converge in the same direction, leading toward a pre-determined future.

"You're a very disappointing time traveler." Blue Fox Ent. has revealed an official US trailer for an indie sci-fi comedy from Canada titled Relax, I'm From the Future, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Luke Higginson. The film premiered at a few festivals in Canada earlier in 2023, and is now set to open in art house theaters in the US later this month. A man from the future, now trapped in the past, tries to make a life for himself, oblivious to the consequences he has set in motion. Rhys Darby stars as Casper, who is now in his "past", our present, who teams up with a nonconformist skeptic to bring about his "plan" of saving the world. The cast also includes Gabrielle Graham, Julian Richings, and Janine Theriault. It looks like a properly wacky indie creation that seems just goofy enough to be mostly enjoyable. Have fun. // Continue...

Colton Haynes stars in Lifetime's Swindler Seduction in a dual role as two questionable twin brothers.
You can tell by the title that he'll be up to no good, and the film follows how his character cozies up to a young woman named Louisa (Gabrielle Graham) and proceeds to turn her life upside down.

What about the dual role appealed to you?
They sent me the script when I was filming Teen Wolf, and I told my agent, I was like, "I have to do this because I haven't really had an opportunity to play [anything like this]."
It's twin brothers, but at the same time, they both, especially Mitch, take on different identities. So I think it was at least five different characters, one of which, I speak French, which I don't sound French at all; I sound like Borat. So...

It's twin brothers, but at the same time, they both, especially Mitch, take on different identities. So I think it was at least five different characters, one of which, I speak French, which I don't sound French at all; I sound like Borat. So...

Colton Haynes will be headlining a new “Ripped From the Headlines” movie for “Lifetime.” The former “Teen Wolf” and “Arrow” star will portray two crooked twin brothers in “Swindler Seduction.”
The channel also announced the upcoming movie “An Amish Sin” with Kellie Martin, Dylan Ratzlaff and Rukiya Bernard.
Premiering on Oct. 22, “Swindler Seduction” features Haynes as a con-man who fools and steals from women like Gabrielle Graham’s Louisa, à la the “Tinder Swindler.” The inspired-by-true events thriller exposes the world of the romantic con artists, with Haynes portraying a seemingly perfect angel investor and entrepreneur named Steve who eventually swindles Louisa out of thousands of dollars. When the authorities refuse to help her, she must track him and his twin down in her attempts to seek justice for herself and other women.

With that in mind here are a few films that stood out to me from the announced schedule and, hopefully, a few we’ll get to bring you reviews of in the near future! You can also check out Alain’s preview of Fantasia right here.

Since its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the people behind Possessor have been desperate for audiences to know how violent the film is. At its first Sundance screening, there was reportedly personnel at the door dutifully checking IDs, which is rare at festival screenings, especially when the film hasn’t yet been rated by the MPAA. As if reactions touting “serious levels of violence and gore” and “gore [that’s] impossible to shake” weren’t enough, Neon recently retitled the film Possessor Uncut. It’s a marketing ploy to hype up the film’s ultraviolence that’s particularly feeble given the film hasn’t been altered from its Sundance version at all. Possessor Uncut––written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of body horror pioneer David Cronenberg––is indeed violent. But it’s telling of how thin the film’s story is that its gory spectacle is all...

Lena Waithe’s breakout hit Twenties will be back for a second go-round. BET has renewed the series for a second season. Additionally, the network announced an Fyc partnership with Showtime, which will air season 1 starting July 6.
The series, which ranks as the No.1 new comedy series on cable for African-Americans 18-49, according to Nielsen L+same day, is receiving awards buzz for Waithe’s creative direction and Jonica T. Gibbs’ lead actress performance.
Created and written by Waithe, Twenties stars Gibbs as Hattie, a queer black girl who is chasing her dreams of being a screenwriter in Los Angeles alongside her two best friends, Marie and Nia, played by Christina Elmore (Insecure) and Gabrielle Graham (Possessor) respectively. While they live separate lives, the girls lean on each other for guidance as they navigate their twenties and test the limits of diversity, love and inclusion.

‘Twenties’ Review: Lena Waithe Revisits Her Earlier, Messier Days as an Aspiring Writer in Hollywood
After scurrying between networks for a decade, Lena Waithe’s comedy series “Twenties” is finally getting its television debut on Bet. The half-hour comedy is the end result of a concept Waithe, now 35 years old, had been working on since her mid-20s. But at the time, no studio would touch a series with a black female lead who unapologetically eschews traditional gender norms. Times have certainly changed, and with “Twenties,” Waithe is able to prove there’s room in Hollywood for stories like this, which, for the first in primetime TV, centers the story of a masculine-of-center black woman, with a little help from the Bette Davis classic, “All About Eve.”
The opening scene of “Twenties” comprises of an inharmonious mishmash of atmosphere and style. A rapidly-edited montage of tangled limbs and ecstatic grins belonging to a pair of black women, thrashing underneath rose-colored sheets in a “bougiefied” Silver Lake apartment.

Though Lena Waithe’s latest project “Twenties” — a comedy that follows the adventures of a young, black, queer woman and her two straight friends struggling to make it in Hollywood — is semi-autobiographical, the 35-year-old actor says that that due to strides made by the industry, the series no longer resembles her journey.
“It’s not that close to my life anymore,” Waithe told reporters at the Bet series’ premiere at Paramount Studios on Monday night in Hollywood. “When I was in my 20s, it was a very different Hollywood than now. People really are into diverse stories a little bit more than when I was in my 20s, living out here.”
One example, Waithe voices the first openly Lgbtq character in Disney-Pixar’s history in upcoming animated film “Onward.” And Waithe confirmed that the groundbreaking move was her idea.
“It was written as a straight [character],” Waithe recalled. “I said,...

There have been dozens of shows about people trying to Make It in Hollywood, but none that quite look like “Twenties,” Lena Waithe’s new comedy based on her own life as an aspiring TV writer. In this Bet series, black women are the leads, not the sidekicks. It stands to reason, then, that the problems and entertainment industry knots they have to untangle are inherently different than those we’ve seen TV depict over and over again with white and/or male protagonists.
Given the tenor and trajectory of the show’s first four episodes, that’s exactly the kind of lofty introductory paragraph that Waithe and co-showrunner Susan Fales-Hill knew might be coming in reviews. “Twenties” is aware of its unique place in the TV canon, and makes moves in its very first episode to both acknowledge and dismiss it. In one of the pilot’s most memorable scenes,...
