It’s unkind to revel in someone else’s failure, but what a gift that this is The Amber Spyglass adaptation we got. It’s hard to imagine New Line Cinema’s defunct film trilogy getting anywhere near so much so right.
The Mulefa, the Land of the Dead, Marisa Coulter’s transformation… all of Philip Pullman’s weirdest and most beautiful ideas have been cradled on their way to the screen by this extraordinary creative team and cast. His story’s been translated in a way that loses nothing and heralds its most vital message: the transformative and rebellious potential of love and storytelling.
If that last part sounds at all hokey to you, know that it’s rendered here with zero schmaltz. Episode five ‘No Way Out’ is a horror movie with a surrealist setting, and actual monsters. There...

As the Summer box office slowly begins to cool off, it may be time for another entry in one of Hollywood’s most lucrative franchises. “Why do you want to be real when you can be famous?”
Such is the haunting question at the center of Disney+’s “Pinocchio,” premiering September 8. Co-written and directed by Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis, the live-action/animated hybrid retelling of the beloved classic tale stars Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the titular wooden doll who dreams of becoming a real boy.
Yet as “Honest” John (Keegan-Michael Key) lures Pinocchio, a talking puppet, into performing as the “eighth wonder of the world,” it’s up to Geppetto, the Blue Fairy (Cynthia Erivo), and Jiminy Cricket (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to guide the boy built with “no conscience.”
Lorraine Bracco, Luke Evans, Kyanne Lamaya, Jaquita Ta’Le, Giuseppe Battiston, and Lewin Lloyd also star.
Based on the 1883 Italian book by Carlo Collodi and the 1940 Disney movie, the new “Pinocchio” has been in development since 2015. While a slew of writers and...

"Why on Earth would you want to be real when you can be… famous?!" Disney has revealed the full-length official trailer for their own live-action adaptation of Pinocchio, starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto. This new film is a remake of the 1940 Disney animated classic, which is itself based on the 1883 Italian book The Adventures of Pinocchio. Hanks is joined by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, a wooden puppet carved by Geppetto, who is turned into a living puppet by the Blue Fairy. Cynthia Erivo also co-stars with Luke Evans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the voice of Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as "Honest" John, a deceptive red fox, and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a brand new character. With Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana, Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli, and Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick. Disney is giving this one the same treatment as The Lion King and Aladdin before it, but unfortunately it looks like trash.

When you wish upon a star, you just might get the first teaser trailer for Disney’s live action “Pinocchio.” But you won’t get a look at Pinocchio himself in the footage just yet.
In the first-look footage, Tom Hanks is hard at work as Gepetto, with his beloved cat Figaro on hand too. He’s crafting the soon-to-be famous puppet Pinocchio, but as always, is very lonely. So, we see him start to make his ultimate wish. But before we see the puppet come to life, we meet his conscience, Jiminy Cricket.
In fact, Pinocchio isn’t seen at all in the footage, beyond just his hand. Instead, audiences get a tease of all the adventures he’ll have, through the eyes of Jiminy Cricket. But there is someone we do get to see: Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy. We even get a few bars of her...

His Dark Materials series one goes out with a bang and the promise of even better to come. Spoilers ahead…

His Dark Materials Episode 8
Before anything else, the feet have to be right. Whether you’re performing a dance move or throwing a jab, everything springs from the feet. In this finale, His Dark Materials was able to pull off balletic pirouettes and land every punch, all because, months ago, it put itself in a solid stance by casting the remarkable Dafne Keen.
Keen is remarkable. She has been throughout, but she’s especially so in this finale. Episode eight gave her a series of long, quiet, emotional two-handers – the kind of scenes that leave an actor nowhere to hide. Through clever editing and canny direction, there are tricks to make young actors look good. Fleeting moments can be captured...

His Dark Materials Episode 7
“We thought book one could not be adapted in fewer than eight episodes,” said His Dark Materials producer Jane Tranter at October’s launch event, “and I didn’t want to push my luck asking for more than eight.” Absolutely, quite right. No complaints here.
Except, if Tranter had pushed her luck to the tune of an extra five minutes for this week’s episode, a few things things might have been better explained. The story of Iorek’s homecoming had gaps that, if filled, would have made it more emotionally satisfying. Perhaps those answers are on their way in the finale, but without them here, Iorek’s redemptive arc lacked some weight. Lee Scoresby’s reaction to...

Actors Ruth Wilson and Clarke Peters took the dais at Ccxp to talk about HBO fantasy drama His Dark Materials, based on the best-selling novels by Philip Pullman. The two went into detail about their characters and how it has been like working on such an ambitious story about Dafne Keen’s Lyra, who, after searching for her kidnapped friend, uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust.
Keen wasn’t able to attend the panel and sent a message of thanks via a video before the actors talked about the show, which tackles intense and heavy topics and themes is just as relevant to children as it is to adults. “We shouldn’t underestimate children,” said Peters. He references a quote that says “Out of the mouths of babes comes truth.”
He adds, “With [His Dark Materials], there are mature themes. If discussed in front of children,...

Describing the plot of His Dark Materials is no small feat. Philip Pullman’s seminal trilogy, upon which this lavish BBC-HBO co-production is based, was defined by its ambition. Spanning worlds and bursting with theological discussion, the books see daemons and witches stand side by side with armoured bears, spectres and angels.
Thankfully, perhaps, the series opens in a much more restrained manner, with the opening two episodes focusing on the strange disappearance of children in London and Oxford at the hands of the ‘Gobblers.’ Meanwhile, the pioneering Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) is voyaging north in search of other worlds and to discover more about Dust, a secretive substance which The Magisterium is willing to obscure by any means necessary.

Question: What does your daemon look like? Is it a ferret, a fox, a monkey, a regal snow leopard? In the world of His Dark Materials, the joint BBC-HBO adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s hugely acclaimed young-adult fantasy series, everybody’s got a literal spirit animal — magical creatures called “daemons” that function like having an external animal-shaped soul you can run around with and talk to. As a way to engage the audience, daemons rank right up there with Harry Potter’s Gryffindor-to-Hufflepuff sorting matrix, or Game of Thrones‘ great houses,...

His Dark Materials Episode 1
There’s a frisson surrounding the launch of His Dark Materials, and not just from fans of Philip Pullman’s books anxious to see justice done. Shadowy forces are circling, murmuring about the risk posed by the BBC-HBO adaptation’s high budget. Isn’t it a gamble, worry these concerned bystanders. And with a second series already filmed, wouldn’t it be just dreadful if it failed?
A cynic might say that failure is precisely what’s being wished on the BBC from those quarters, and that, unless the premiere is met with unqualified rapture and towering ratings,...

Renee Zellweger gives a knockout performance as the legendary Judy Garland, in a biopic set in her later years. as the star struggles to make a living, battles alcoholism and self-destructive behavior and tries to keep her two young children close. Judy takes a sympathetic view of the star in her twilight years, a difficult time when she was still famous enough to draw crowds but when her voice was fading and her reputation for unreliability made it hard to find work.
Renee Zellweger’s turn as Judy Garland is the film’s major asset. The film, which is based on the play “End of the Rainbow” by Peter Quilty, is directed by Rupert Goold. Famous people playing other famous people can be a tricky business. At its worst, the exercise yields nothing but an embarrassing impersonation, but there’s always the hope for that moment of transcendence, in which one legend disappears into the skin of another. In recent years, Michael Douglas managed it, playing Liberace in “Behind the Candelabra,” and a pre-“Black Panther” Chadwick Boseman accomplished it twice, as Jackie Robinson in “42” and James Brown in “Get On Up.”
To that list, we must add Renee Zellweger in “Judy,” giving the kind of masterful performance that requires that we forget everything we think we know about Zellweger as an actor. For 118 minutes, she becomes Judy Garland, which is no easy task — Garland is one of the 20th century’s greatest icons, and while any number of drag queens over the years have paid her varying degrees of homage, she was a...

Renée Zellweger performs miracles playing Judy Garland: singing her heart out, baring her bruised soul and acting with a ferocity that ultimately rises to a state of grace. Yes, Judy, the well-meaning but wobbly biopic that can barely contain her take on the late Star Is Born star, is pure Oscarbait — ready made for an Academy campaign and rarely soaring to the level of a portrayal that’s a dazzling, deeply felt tribute from one artist to another.

The first season of His Dark Materials, which is written by Jack Thorne, follows Lyra, played by Dafne Keen, whose search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. If it’s taken so long for a bigscreen biopic of Judy Garland to come to fruition, perhaps it’s because the lady herself warned off any attempts with one of her most famous quotes: “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” It is not, admittedly, a saying that has deterred Hollywood from its ongoing fascination with famous people playing other famous people, though it’s a practice that yields more successful Oscar campaigns than for-the-ages performances: Prosthetically enhanced impersonation, for the most part, isn’t a repeatedly dazzling trick. Yet director Rupert Goold and resurgent star Renée Zellweger have pulled off something unusual and affecting in “Judy”: a biographical portrait in which performer and subject meet halfway, illuminating something of each other in the process.

The creative team behind His Dark Materials has called the Philip Pullman adaptation a “challenging” show to write but the “quintessential” HBO/BBC co-production.
Writer Jack Thorne and exec producer Jane Tranter, who runs production company Bad Wolf, spoke about the big-budget fantasy epic alongside stars including Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its TCA press tour panel.
Thorne admitted that he wrote several dozens drafts for the first episode of the show, which is set to launch on HBO in October. “We wrote papers to ourselves about all the different ideas in the show. We wanted to do a Ph.D. in Phillip Pullman and we tried to do a Ph.D. in His Dark Materials. I wrote 46 drafts of episode one in order to find a way to tell this story as elegantly as possible. “His Dark Materials,” the fantasy trilogy by Philip Pullman that has captivated readers since its publication in the late 90s, has proven difficult to adapt in the past. If the forthcoming HBO and BBC series doesn’t hit the mark, viewers and critics will once again be sharpening their subtle knives.
The show took over Hall H at Comic-Con on Thursday afternoon, with stars James McAvoy (Lord Asriel), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby), Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter) and Dafne Keen (Lyra Belacqua) all present to show off a new trailer.
The trailer teased the war with the evil organization known the magisterium, with Lord Asriel on one side and Mrs. Coulter on the other. Also mentioned was the child abduction plot at the center of the show.

Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town.
