Producer Ali Afshar and Esx Entertainment has become a big supplier of holiday movies for HBO Max with count ’em, three coming up: two on Thanksgiving — Holiday Harmony and A Christmas Mystery and one one on Dec. 1, A Hollywood Christmas.
Holiday Harmony follows singer/songwriter Gail (Annelise Cepero) who lands an opportunity to compete for a once-in-a-lifetime shot at the big time, and heads cross country—until she breaks down in Harmony Springs, Oklahoma. With just two weeks to get to the iHeartRadio Christmas Eve performance of her dreams, she takes the advice of local Jack-of-all-trades, Jeremy (Jeremy Sumpter), and takes on a group of misfit kids hoping to perform in a Christmas Eve Gala of their own. Gail and Jeremy grow close, but if she’s going to fulfill her lifelong dream, she may have to leave him and the town she’s grown to love behind. Brooke Shields...

Set sometime in the 1950s, Monstrous opens as Laura puts her son Cody in the back seat of the car and hits the road for California as “See You Later Alligator” plays on the soundtrack.
She’s leaving Arizona and an abusive ex-husband behind and plans to start over in a safer environment for her and her son. She’s rented a beautiful house by a large pond from Mr. and Mrs. and a job working for Mr. Alonzo.
But this sunny bit of nostalgia is about to turn much darker. Cody is convinced a monster from the lake is stalking them. He also misses home, and despite the reasons for their leaving, his father. Speaking of whom, he’s gotten Laura’s phone number and begins calling.

“Monstrous” is a supernatural thriller that digs much deeper than it first appears: On the surface, Laura (Christina Ricci) is simply a mother looking to restart her life in a new town with her young son Cody. Considering the 1950s setting, a time when it might be unusual for a woman to raise a child alone in a town unfamiliar to her, it’s almost immediately clear that something is up with Laura. Figuring out what that is, however, is what fuels the mystery.
Making matters more curious, Laura and Cody’s new home is remote and near a pond. It’s one of those movie homes that screams “ghosts” and “monsters.” And true to the cliché, the house, while picturesque and perfect in Laura’s eyes, immediately has issues.
Before they can even unpack, Cody doesn’t feel well in the house. When his mom suggests a nap, he...

The hybrid movie "Monstrous" suffers from an identity crisis; taking cues from the genres of horror, mystery, period-drama, and thriller, it fails to capture the spirit of any — making for a dull 90-minute viewing experience. It's a sobering lesson in how "less is more" when it comes to indie films.
"Monstrous" is, on a basic level, the story of a 1950s American housewife, Laura (Christina Ricci), fleeing her abusive husband with their seven-year-old son, Cody (Santino Barnard). They move to California and rent a beautiful farmhouse, furnished with the best and brightest the decade has to offer. Cody goes to school with other local...

For much of her career Christina Ricci always seemed to have her toe dipped in the hot bath of horror cinema, whether it be The Addams Family, Cursed or Sleepy Hollow. Ricci was a key part of these ensemble movies, but now – 12 years after her last genre outing - she leads the way in Monstrous – a tale about a woman battling against more than one monster.
Ricci plays Laura, a mother trying to start a new life with her son, Cody (Santino Barnard). Laura tries to live a picturesque existence in a new home, with a new job, in new surroundings, but Cody appears less than thrilled about having to start over and doesn’t share his mother’s enthusiasm.
Set during the 1950s, complete with Chevys, swing dresses and a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack (Buddy Holly and Bill Haley & his Comets to name a few), Laura appears determined to...

Sometimes the situation at home is so unbearable that one has no choice but to pack up the car and go, leaving it all behind, hoping to make a fresh start somewhere new. That’s how Laura (Christina Ricci) finds her way to the house by the lake, on the outskirts of a small town where she will get a job as a typist and where she hopes her son will be able to find friends at school. Determined no to think about what she’s been through in the past, she’s stubbornly upbeat, her brightly coloured dresses and bright smile enlivening everything around her, but she will have her work cut out to stay that way.
It begins with night terrors. She hears Cody (Santino Barnard) crying out at night, and he insists that someone has been in his room. He takes to wandering near the lake and seems to be alternately.

"I think I have a demon in my house." It seems like she does indeed! Screen Media Films has debuted the first official trailer for a horror thriller titled Monstrous, the latest from filmmaker Chris Sivertson. This is arriving in early May for anyone who wants to watch and find out. The film's story centers on a traumatized woman named Laura fleeing from her abusive ex-husband with her 7-year-old son. In their new, remote sanctuary at a lakeside farmhouse they find they have a bigger, more terrifying monster to deal with. It's not what you think, but it really seems like something supernatural and very scary! But who or what is it after? There's a number of cliche horror shots in this that will definitely make the hair on the back of your neck stand up anyway. Starring Christina Ricci with Santino Barnard, Don Baldaramos, Colleen Camp, Lew Temple, and Carol Anne Watts.

Christina Ricci plays a troubled mother in Monstrous, a supernatural thriller that premiered in the FrightFest strand of the Glasgow Film Festival and was recently acquired by Screen Media for North America. Written by Carol Chrest (The Prophet’s Game) and directed by Chris Sivertson, it morphs from stylish psychological drama to creature feature, delivering an impact that’s best appreciated after the credits roll.
The immaculately-dressed Laura (Ricci) drives her turquoise Chevy to a remote new home in California. With her is her seven-year-old son, Cody (Santino Barnard). They start to settle in, but sinister phone calls indicate that Laura’s abusive husband is intent on tracking them down. Meanwhile, Cody becomes fascinated by the nearby lake, where he claims a monster is lurking.

We all know by now how popular the 80s are in modern day. The nostalgia of the past is a huge selling point in media, be it video games, books, TV shows or, indeed, movies. Well festive film 8-Bit Christmas follows suit as the adult Jake Doyle (Neil Patrick Harris) tells his daughter the story of child Jake Doyle (Winslow Fegley) and his attempt to get hold of a Nintendo Entertainment System back in the 80s. The film is told with Harris’s narration on top, for the most-part, in a flashback style. A Christmas movie set in the eighties with a story centered around a child that is desperate to a Nintendo Entertainment System (Nes for short) as his main present?! 8-Bit Christmas is one of those movies that seems made for me (and I’m sure many other people of a similar age). In fact it could almost be written about me too – again, I’m sure there’s plenty of people that feel the same! Getting past the nostalgia though, can this movie remain entertaining.
The story is told through Neil Patrick Harris, as Jake, as an adult in modern day. He introduces his daughter to the Nes and then tells her the story of how he got it.

This Penny Dreadful: City of Angels review contains spoilers.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 7
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 7, “Maria and the Beast,” brings into focus the question we’ve all been asking since the series began: Why is the Vega family being picked on so badly? Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo ) left her mark on Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) when he was a young boy and lost his father, and she hasn’t let up since then.
The Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) confession is big time news. They’re calling him a mad dog killer and Detective Tiago Vega’s local bartender says he should get a medal for the arrest. But, it doesn’t look like he gave Tiago a free drink. At least he can get a free shave from Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé). That’s what she does for the homeless who come into her soup kitchen.

It’s in the prologue of Sunday’s premiere of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels that shapeshifting demon Magda (Natalie Dorman) asks what could pass for a rhetorical question: “Are you ready?” Of course we are. But could City of Angels possibly live up to the promise of its bloodline? Would we be drawn in as quickly and deeply by Magda, her accomplices and opponents, as we were Vanessa Ives and the Creature? After you’ve checked out TVLine’s review,...

Now that ABC has “fully and finally cancelled” Whiskey Cavalier — and before the window of opportunity closes for the network to rethink another of its more dubious decisions — may I suggest that it make haste and un-axe The Kids Are Alright?
In the interest of full disclosure, I’ll admit upfront that I’d implore ABC to reconsider dumping the 1970s-set series even if it didn’t make (dollars and) sense to do so. As we inch closer to upfronts week, the broadcast networks are cleaning house to make room for some new series.
As such, ABC has now swung the ax on freshman comedy The Kids Are Alright, and freshman drama The Fix.
Of the two cancellations, The Kids Are Alright is the biggest surprise. The Mary McCormack and Michael Cudlitz-fronted series had strong reviews.
It started strong in the ratings, but has tailed off in recent weeks. It is currently averaging 4.1 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating in the demo in live + same day measures.

The Kids Are Alright stars Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack, Sam Straley, Caleb Foote, Sawyer Barth, Christopher Paul Richards, Jack Gore, Andy Walken, and Santino Barnard. The 1970s-period comedy centers on the Clearys, an Irish-Catholic family living on the outskirts of Los Angeles. ABC has canceled “The Kids Are Alright” and “The Fix” after one season each.
The news on “The Kids Are Alright” was announced by series creator Tim Doyle on Twitter. “‘The Kids Are Alright’ is dead. I just got the call. Goodbye,” he wrote.
The ensemble comedy, set in the 1970s, centers on a traditional Irish-Catholic family, the Clearys. Mom Peggy (Mary McCormack) and dad Mike (Michael Cudlitz) are raising eight boisterous boys, who spend their days with little supervision, against the backdrop of one of America’s most turbulent decades.
The series also starred Sam Straley as Lawrence Cleary, Caleb Foote as Eddie Cleary, Sawyer Barth as Frank Cleary, Christopher Paul Richards as Joey Cleary, Jack Gore as Timmy Cleary, Andy Walken as William Cleary and Santino Barnard as Pat Cleary.

The Tim Doyle-created The Kids Are Alright has been canceled by ABC.
Penned and executive produced by the former Last Man Standing showrunner, the first season of the 1970s-set ensemble comedy premiered October 16 last year and is scheduled to wrap up on May 21 in what will now be a series finale.
Following a very traditional Irish-Catholic family in suburban L.A. amidst the hangover from the 1960s, parents Mike (Michael Cudlitz) and Peggy (Mary McCormack) are overwhelmed raising eight boys and are hit by a figurative truck when oldest son Lawrence (Sam Straley) returns home to declare he’s quitting the seminary to “save the world.”
As Doyle stated repeatedly when the show was picked up by the Disney-owned net to series in 2018, the Tkaa is inspired by his family and childhood with fifth son Timmy (Jack Gore) essentially playing the Ep as a boy.

ABC has given back orders to Tuesday comedy series The Kids Are Alright and Splitting Up Together. With that, the network has picked up additional episodes of all of its fall series that did not have full-season orders.
ABC would not specify the size of the pickups for freshman Kids Are Alright and sophomore Splitting Up Together beyond calling them full-season orders. I hear Kids Are Alright has received a Back 9 order for a traditional 22-episode full season, while Splitting Up Together will produced five additional episodes for a 18-episode second season.
Kids Are Alright, from ABC Studios, has been the stronger ratings performer of the two, as the 1970s blue-collar family comedy, airing at 8:30 Pm, is benefiting from a stronger lead-in from The Conners. Romantic comedy Splitting Up Together, from Warner Bros TV, airs behind Black-ish at 9:30 Pm and regularly ranks as the least=watched ABC series...

ABC ordered a mix of comedy pilots this season — most revolved around families but some ventured into workplace and even the superhero genre. In the end, the ones that made the cut to series are the 1970s-set The Kids Are Alright (fka untitled Tim Doyle), which just got the nod, and Single Parents, which was picked up earlier today. Both are family comedies, as are all renewed ABC half-hour series.
ABC last year tried to broaden up its comedy field with The Mayor, its most profile new comedy series and the only one to get a fall launch. It fizzled as did another comedy that had a strong workplace component, Alex Inc. Meanwhile, the revival of ABC’s classic family comedy Roseanne had a blockbuster premiere. The family-themed new comedy Splitting Up Together, which launched behind Roseanne, was the only freshman ABC comedy to make it to Season 2.
