There are few people on planet Earth who can rap as fast as J Noa — and even fewer who actually have something to say. On her 2023 debut EP, Autodidactica, the 18-year-old Mc from the 5 de Abril barrio in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, showcased one of the most nimble flows in rap of any language, along with a penchant for strings-laden throwback beats and a modern perspective. Beyond merely precocious, her voice carries the weight of one who’s seen some things and lived to tell about them.

Kali Uchis has shared her new album Orquídeas, her fourth studio album overall and her second sung entirely in Spanish.
Orquídeas includes the previously released singles “Muñekita” featuring El Alfa and City Girls’ Jt, “Te Mata,” and “Labios Mordidos” featuring Karol G. Other collaborators on the 14-track album include Peso Pluma, and Rauw Alejandro, as well as her real-life partner Don Toliver, with whom she just revealed she’s expecting her first child in the new music video for “Tu Corazón Es Mío / Diosa.”
Orquídeas translates to “orchid,” and Uchis explained the significance of the album’s botanical title in a statement: “The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth,” she said. “I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower. This album is inspired by the timeless, eerie, mystic, striking, graceful, and sensual allure of the orchid.

Few artists can set a scene like Kali Uchis. Each of her albums has proven that she’s a master of mood boards and a queen of aesthetics: Her 2018 debut album, Isolation, was a lush world of retro R&b best enjoyed on a heart-shaped couch; 2023’s Red Moon in Venus included cosmic, shape-shifting pop songs to be drunk up during a lunar eclipse. Across each project, she’s stitched disparate sonic textures together like fabric swatches and placed her voice front and center — allowing it to gently guide her...

Two Colombiana reinas have teamed up to bring back Og reggaeton: Kali Uchis just released “Labios Mordidos,” a new collaboration with fellow superstar Karol G. The song carries an old-school reggaetón energy, as the artists sing sensually to each other about getting dirty in the dark, with Uchis declaring, “Tonight I’m a lesbian, you make me want it.”
Both stars have been teasing their new collab, which follows Bichota Season‘s “Me Tengo Que Ir,” for some time now. Karol G recently sang her verse in the collaboration while...

Kali Uchis has announced her new album Orquídeas, out January 12th, 2024. It’ll mark her fourth studio album overall and her second sung entirely in Spanish.
While Uchis hasn’t offered many more details about the record, she did explain the significance of its botanical title: “The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth,” she explains in a press release. “I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower. This album is inspired by the timeless, eerie, mystic, striking, graceful and sensual allure of the orchid. With this vast scope of fresh energy, I wish to re-define the way we look at Latinas in music.”
Pre-orders are ongoing. See the artwork for Orquídeas below.
Orquídeas will arrive less than a year after her last LP, Red Moon in Venus. In August, she shared the single “Muñekita” featuring El Alfa and City Girls’ Jt.

Lately, Peso Pluma’s raspy twang seems to be everywhere. It’s there, creaking with grit and originality, on his Eslabón Armado hit “Ella Baila Sola,” which became the first regional Mexican song to reach the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100. (Fans have been so enamored by the way he croaks out “Bella!” in his opening verse that they’ve started a viral TikTok challenge, imitating the singer.) His distinct delivery on “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55,” his collaboration with famed Argentine producer Bizarrap, drove the track to Number One on Spotify’s Global charts.

In our Q&a feature series Tell Me Más, we ask some of our favorite Latine artists to answer the questions only their BFFs know about them, revealing everything from their most recent read to the songs that get them hyped. This month, we sit down with Mexican pop star Danna Paola.
Danna Paola may have gained fame as a child star, but her development as a woman in the music industry is a work in process for this Mexican artist. While being a singer is something that she has been doing her whole life, this new era for Paola is all about self-discovery. Danna was chosen to play Amy Granados, the lead in the successful children's series "Amy, la niña de la mochila azul," which premiered in 2004. She also voiced Rapunzel for the Latin American Spanish-language dubbing of the Disney film "Tangled" and worked in Netflix's hit Spanish teen drama series "Elite,...

Fresh off the success of her third studio album, Red Moon in Venus, and a sold-out tour, Kali Uchis is back with more dates and more new music.
Featuring Dominican dembow singer El Alfa and City Girls’ Jt, “Muñekita” is a grooving track with a fairly standard, irresistibly-dancey reggaeton beat (though Uchis has posted online that the album will not be primarily in the reggaeton style). Still, the single marks the onset of “a new era of Spanish-language music” for Uchis, according to the press release.
For her part, Uchis explained how excited she was to work with El Alfa and Jt. She first connected with the artists via DMs, and the collaboration was born out of the three’s mutual admiration. “I love bringing artists together that you’d least expect,” Uchis said in a statement. “El Alfa is a Latino legend and Jt is someone I’ve admired forever.

The music video opens with the kids (and the dembow legend) walking out of a private jet and dancing in front of a bouncy house.

El Alfa never stops. Throughout his 15-year career, the Dominican pioneer has worked relentlessly to bring dembow to the world — and it’s worked. The genre has gone massively global with him at the center, respected among his peers and the whole of the Latin music industry as dembow’s fierce leader.
Over the last year, he’s brought new innovations to his sound, particularly on this spring’s Sabiduria, a bold, wide-ranging album that included guaracha influences, experiments with Mexican traditions, and collaborations with American rappers like French Montana and Lil Pump.

Mexican American pop artist Becky G has spoken frequently about the way she’s elevated her career by collaborating with her female peers, especially those in the Latin-music landscape. She’s also worked with some well-known men who dominate the charts — from Bad Bunny (2017’s “Mayores”) to Maluma (2019’s “La Respuesta”). That sense of community is all over her new album, too. Yet, there comes a time when an artist has to assert their autonomy — and on Esquemas, Becky G takes center stage, even when she’s collaborating. The result is her best music yet.

If there’s one person who represents the global force that Dominican dembow has become, it’s El Alfa. He’s become a go-to collaborator for stars such as Bad Bunny, Farruko, and Nicky Jam, who have tapped him to get authentic dembow sounds, and across the industry, he’s recognized and respected as a pioneer who’s helped build a red-hot sound from the ground up.

Legacy artists need exit strategies. These days, with pandemic disruptions closing off lucrative live-performance opportunities, a lot of the biggest names in rock and pop history have taken headline-grabbing catalog buyouts of their sizable discographies for eight- to nine-figure sums. But departing the entertainment industry isn’t solely about cashing out; it’s also about leaving one’s fans on the best possible terms, ensuring that those who supported you all those years aren’t left unsatisfied. So over this past weekend, when Daddy Yankee formally announced his retirement from music,...

With every successful cultural movement, you’re bound to have bandwagon jumpers. As a plurality of reggaetoneros, traperos, and pop singers from across Latin America enjoy unprecedented albeit overdue global success, tourists like DJ Khaled, DJ Snake, and Tyga have inevitably glommed onto their sound, with varying degrees of success.
None of these attempts have felt quite so cravenly opportunistic and sonically shallow as that of the Black Eyed Peas, who have struggled to maintain a semblance of their former cultural omnipresence in the years since the departure of Fergie.

Few people have a résumé as eclectic as Paris Cabezas. He grew up in rural Cuba, where his mother urged him to take up the piano “to get out of the farm.” He later picked up a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics from M.I.

During the last two years, Bad Bunny has left no box unchecked en route to attaining global superstardom. His 2018 debut X 100pre (which featured assists from a small handful of co-stars including Diplo, El Alfa and Drake) was a crossover experiment that saw El Conejo level up from newcomer to pop titan. Since then, the 25-year-old Latin trap artist has graced Coachella’s main stage, collaborated with J Balvin on the joint LP Oasis, worked with pals Residente and Ricky Martin to help oust the Governor of Puerto Rico, received three Grammy nominations,...

The Latin Grammys shortchanged Bad Bunny during the nomination process this year, but they gave him the honor of closing out the festivities in Las Vegas on Thursday night.
Before the star even took the stage, a full orchestra played instrumental versions of several songs from X100Pre, which won Best Urban Music Album earlier in the night. Bad Bunny arrived wearing bright red, which stood out against the head-to-toe white of his musicians. He performed his recent single “Callaíta,” a collaboration with Tainy that has earned almost 500 million streams on Spotify.

Two months ago, Awez Darbar, an Indian dancer and choreographer with a sizable following — 1.7 million subscribers on YouTube and close to 19 million followers on TikTok — posted a new dance video online. Most of his clips are set to songs that are popular in India; occasionally Darbar dabbles in English-language hits like Drake’s “In My Feelings” or Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You.” But at the end of September, the dancer was writhing around on the floor and punching his fists skyward, trying to keep up with the jackhammering raps of El Alfa.

Major Lazer and Khalid use a gunshot as a breakup metaphor on their reflective new song, “Trigger.”
“It’s obvious that you’re already gone/So unleash your weapon, aim it at my chest,” Khalid sings over the group’s simmering synths and minimal electronics. “If our love is a drug, you’re the one with the trigger/Shoot me down, shoot me down/I don’t wanna remember you.”
The brief track — two verses, two choruses — builds to a wordless hook of trendy, pitch-shifted vocals and a stuttering dance beat.

Major Lazer light up the club — or in this case, a party cave in the jungle — in their new video for “Que Calor.” With the help of Colombian megastar J Balvin and Dominican dembow veteran El Alfa, the American Edm collective close out the summer with a bang.
The Spanish-language track kicks off with an arresting flute sample, sourced from the 1993 Colombian cumbia classic, “Curura,” by Afro-Colombian group Totó La Momposina y sus Tambores. It’s followed by a brisk dancehall-meets-dembow rhythm, which sets the pace for total anarchy on the dance floor.

It was 8 p.m. on a Saturday in New York City — and somewhere inside Madison Square Garden, a Bad Bunny fan was missing a chancla. Although it seemed rather early in the night for misplacing odd articles of footwear, the lone rubber sandal with ‘Puerto Rico’ printed on its strap, abandoned at the base of an escalator, would foreshadow a wild night to come.

Puerto Rican reggaeton star Bad Bunny has dropped the new video for “La Romana,” co-starring Dominican dembow artist El Alfa. The bachata-trap party number is the latest single off Bad Bunny’s 2018 album, X 100Pre.
“¡Pasame la hookah!” sings Bunny, aptly sporting a “Free the hookah” shirt in his brand new visual. He makes a neighborly visit to the streets of Santo Domingo: where local men play round after round of dominoes, and local women, both young and old, are wooed by the singer’s dance moves.
