It’s a well-established fact that the respective creators of South Park and Family Guy hate each other, and that’s to be expected — theater geeks just love drama.
The animated comedy community is rife with rivalries, and some are much friendlier than others. Ever since the Golden Age of Warner Bros. and Disney, the cartoon business has always had a healthy spirit of competition between the power players that can occasionally spill over into ugly acrimony — like how Seth MacFarlane responded to a Simpsons gag about Peter Griffin being a clone of Homer by having Quagmire straight up sexually assault Marge and murder her family. However, MacFarlane’s most heated and most personal feud somehow isn’t with the predecessor series to which his Family Guy is so often compared, but with the outspoken creative duo of Trey Parker and Matt Stone who made their feelings about MacFarlane’s...

As technological advances make even more astonishing imagery possible for many of the leading contenders in the animated feature Oscar race, they’re still leaning toward the skilled hands of the artisans who’ve mastered their craft and away from AI or machine learning.
While some may use machine learning — a type of AI — in the early stages of motion capture or to iterate ideas, the knowledge of experienced VFX artists and the performance capabilities of animators are central to creating the unique imagery sought by the filmmakers behind these movies. Some films, like “Lord of the Rings: The Lord of the Rohirrim,” are more focused on traditional low-tech tools to create their look.
“Transformers One,” an origin story helmed by Josh Cooley, was designed with heavy research on both previous Transformers storytelling and the types of metals that could be used to create the impact the filmmakers wanted. Cooley...

“Ena – Queen Victoria Eugenia,” the screening highlight in Mipcom’s Spain Country of Honor celebrations, begins with a bang.
Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, Queen Victoria youngest granddaughter, marries Spain’s Alfonso Xiii at Madrid’s San Jerónimo Royal Monastery on May 31, 1906. Splendid first scenes see the couple after the wedding in their carriage, Ena smiling as crowds cry her name as the royal carriage sweeps past.
But her happiness lasted less than two miles, the distance between Los Jerónimos to Madrid’s old part Calle Mayor where an anarchist throws a bomb. The opening scenes end with Ena and Alfonso slumped unconscious in their carriage.
Created by ‘The Department of Time’s’ Javier Olivares and directed by Anaïs Pareto and Estel Díaz, “Ena” is produced by Spanish public broadcaster Rtve, and Spain’s biggest royal drama to date.
What it isn’t, however, is a “The Crown” or “Maxima” knock-off.

The American Society of Cinematographers is training its career-honor lens on Andrzej Bartkowiak, who will receive the group’s 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award. The longtime Sidney Lumet collaborator will be feted February 23 during 39th annual ASC Awards at the Beverly Hilton.

“Transformers One,” the animated reboot from Paramount/Hasbro and director Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”), leverages the format as never before with a brand new handmade look and an emphasis on emotional performance that helps us better connect with the robots. Also, transformations are key as homages to the original toys and the ’80s G1 cartoon series, with every piece of the robot having a corresponding place on the vehicle.
This plays into the origin story of Cybertron and the roots of its destruction by focusing on the friendship between lowly miners Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry). They eventually transform into the legendary Autobots Optimus Prime and Megatron, only to become bitter enemies divided by optimism and anger.
Ilm was tasked with the animation (only its third feature following “Ultraman: Rising” and the Oscar-winning “Rango”), overseen by VFX supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation supervisor Stephen King.

British director Joe Wright, who helmed Winston Churchill drama “Darkest Hour,” is at the Venice Film Festival with another historical piece, high-end TV drama “M. Son of the Century.” The series chronicles Benito Mussolini’s rise to power and is particularly timely as populist leaders are sprouting up all over the world.
Based on Italian author Antonio Scurati’s eponymous bestselling novel which traces the birth of Fascism in Italy, “M” reconstructs Mussolini’s ascent with an innovative approach. Luca Marinelli plays the despotic leader during the period between 1919, when he founded the fascist party in Italy, and 1925 when – having gained power with the 1922 March on Rome – Mussolini made an infamous speech in the Italian Chamber of Deputies declaring himself a dictator.
“M” is produced by Sky Studios and Lorenzo Mieli for Fremantle-owned The Apartment Pictures in collaboration with Pathé and Small Forward. The show, which was largely shot at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios,...

Filmmaker Joe Wright takes a 180 in the portrayal of World War II prime ministers, pivoting from the wise and measured Winston Churchill in 2017’s Darkest Hour (which delivered a Best Actor Oscar win to Gary Oldman) to the spontaneous, hot blooded and short-fused Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini in the Fremantle/Apartment/Sky/Pathe series M. Son of the Century, which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival today. While the Lido gets to see the series’ full eight hours that Wright directed and executive produced, TIFF will be treated to the first two episodes.
We spoke with Wright while he was editing the punk-rock stylized series. He originally shot M. from October 2022-April 2023; the show carrying all the filmmaker’s tonal sensibilities, i.e., deep amber colors, flickering shadows, fierce pacing which we’ve seen in his award-winning features Darkest Hour, Atonement, Anna Karenina and more.

William Shatner became a legend for playing the role of Captain James T. Kirk in the show Star Trek. The actor played the role in all three seasons of the original series and even returned for the seven films with the Og cast. He also made an appearance on Star Trek: Generations, which passed the torch to the spinoff show The Next Generation.
While the film received mixed responses, one aspect of the film tested so badly with the audience that Paramount reportedly decided to change the scene. The scene involved the death of Shatner’s Captain Kirk. The veteran actor still seemed to be disappointed with it, but did not want another do-over.

Greetings friends! Have you ever dreamed of exploring a post-apocalyptic London? Well now you can, thanks to the ambitious fan project Fallout: London.
This enormous mod transforms the beloved Fallout 4 into a whole new game, transporting the action across the Atlantic. No longer bound by America’s ruined cities, the setting is reimagined in our own capital following a nuclear war.
London lies in ruins, but pockets of civilization endure among the wreckage. Gangs carve out rough territories as factions battle for control. Meanwhile, mysteries lurk involving a shadowy group called Angel. Your character awakens with amnesia, thrust into a quest to uncover their past and this new world.
I’ve spent dozens of hours already adventuring through the wastelands of Ol’ Blighty. From dens of bandits to the blasted streets of boroughs, each new area holds surprises. Iconic landmarks stand as reminders of the past, presiding over the chaos.

Chris Rock is set to direct the English language remake of the Oscar-winning Another Round: more here.
The Oscar-winning 2020 black comedy Another Round is a superb film, a mainstream-leaning movie about drink dependency starring Mads Mikkelsen in the lead role. Thomas Vinterberg directed the film, and around the time Another Round became a hit, there was talk of an English-language remake.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way picked up the rights, and there’s been development work presumably going on since around that time. Not that there’s been much word on the project popping up in the press.
Now, though: some news. As you’d expect, given the headline and the fact that this non-ai-generated article exists.
Chris Rock is returning to directing for the English-language Another Round. Stuart Bloomberg had penned a draft of the script, yet there’s now going to be a new writer...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Two entries ago, we discussed Thomas J. Churchill’s vampire-themed, title card only “franchise” entry, The Amityville Harvest. I knew that the writer/director had a sequel film, so going into The Amityville Moon was an interesting exercise.
As it turns out, sequel is a generous term for Churchill’s second Amityville film. It shares the same visual aesthetic as Harvest, an actor (Michael Cervantes), and may even be shot in the same location. Aside from that, however, the characters are all new and, in place of a vampire, The Amityville Moon features a werewolf as its central protagonist.
One thing that hasn’t changed: this is another in a long line of Amityville films that uses the famous title as an IP cash grab.

“Churchill said about Fdr that it was like opening your first bottle of champagne to encounter him. There was such sparkle,” says leading presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, executive producer of Fdr, a three-part documentary series about America’s longest-serving — and possibly most effervescent — president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt held office from 1933 until his death in 1945 and famously led the nation out of the Great Depression and toward victory in World War II. The sociable, naturally optimistic Harvard grad comes to life in vivid dramatizations based on letters and diaries. Context is provided by archival footage, interviews with historians and scholars, and prized documents — like a draft of his speech after the Pearl Harbor attack, where he crossed out “world history” and wrote “infamy.” The doc (premiering May 29 on the History Channel) also looks at Fdr’s formative years, including as a spunky young boy in elite Hyde Park, New York.

Ahmedabad, May 10 (Ians) In a top of the table clash from Group B, Sethu Madurai Fc and Kickstart Fc played out a goalless draw at the TransStadia in the Indian Women’s League, here on Wednesday.
The result preserved Sethu’s unbeaten run — while breaking their perfect record so far and also kept Kickstart’s five-match unbeaten streak alive. For the latter though, it came at the cost of dropping a place on the table.
Both sides were evenly matched throughout the match, both missing multiple opportunities to take the lead, and failing to apply the finishing touches. For Sethu Madurai, the result was all the more tougher to digest, the former champions were presented with far cleaner chances, only to be thwarted by an imperious Maibam Linthoigambi Devi in the Kickstart goal.

Movie star John Wayne once expressed his positive thoughts toward Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Winston Churchill. He was known to be politically vocal, unafraid to express his support or disapproval of politicians. Here’s a look at why Wayne thought Churchill was the “most terrific fella of our century.”
John Wayne was vocally anti-communist John Wayne | Martin Mills/Getty Images
Wayne was closely associated with his conservative Republican views. However, he didn’t always think that he aligned with the political party. In fact, Wayne considered himself a liberal before the world reminded him that he held very traditionalist, conservative views.

Wayne was closely associated with his conservative Republican views. However, he didn’t always think that he aligned with the political party. In fact, Wayne considered himself a liberal before the world reminded him that he held very traditionalist, conservative views.

Srinagar, Nov 29 (Ians) Real Kashmir continued their unbeaten run in the 2022-23 Hero I-League with a 1-0 win over Churchill Brothers at the Trc Stadium here.
A second-half header by the substitute Ibrahim Nurudeen proved enough for the hosts as they defeated Churchill Brothers for the first time in the I-League.
Churchill Brothers maintained possession right from the first whistle, however, the first major chance of the game fell for the home side at the quarter-hour mark as midfielder Yakubu Wadudu’s shot was deflected onto the post by goalkeeper Albino Gomes.
In the 18th minute, Real Kashmir’s Lalnuntluanga Bawitlung took a powerful shot from 30-yards out but the Churchill custodian Albino Gomes made a great save, diving to his left to keep the ball out of his goal.
The 28-year-old was called into action again in the 34th minute, making another acrobatic save, this time from Samuel Kynshi’s effort.

Theatre is the quintessential art of reinterpretation. Every time a play is revived it is “remade”. With something so joyously provisional, why would you want to be definitive? And so with that in mind, let’s be clear that what follows is not some Olympian effort to decree “the best plays of all time”. Instead, it is a selection of pieces we find continually rewarding.
Inevitably, such a list reflects the work that’s staged, celebrated, and studied in the UK; it draws on a western canon. There are more men than women, more white writers than people of colour, although limiting ourselves to a single work by any author – dead white male or not – should help to widen the scope a little; yes, that means only one play by Shakespeare. We hope you will check out these plays – ideally in performance but, if you can’t find one, by reading the text.

Astonishing Tales of Terror: Rocktapussy! opens in 1957 when a strange opening in the wall of a mine attracts the attention of a trio of miners. They crawl through to explore but find way more than they expected. The only survivor closes the opening with some convenient dynamite.
In the present Hunter Hazelton has broken a story of corruption in city hall. She had to go undercover as a stripper to do it, which doesn’t seem to have gone over well with her colleagues. Or her father for that matter. “Next time you go undercover, can you be a bit more covered?”
However when a technology demonstration at that same mine awakens the creature we saw in the prologue, what she’s wearing will be the least of her worries,...

By this time, don’t we know just about everything there is to know about Alfred Hitchcock? Few, if any, other filmmakers have had their lives and careers examined, explored and analyzed as much as has the vaunted master of suspense. So unless incontrovertible evidence were to be suddenly found that the director secretly fathered a dozen illegitimate children by as many women and personally supplied Churchill with an untraceable poison powder to drop into Stalin’s tea in Yalta, only to see the prime minister chicken out, it’s quite unlikely that much new will ever be added to his life story that we don’t already know.
But leave it to the staggeringly prolific North Irish documentary filmmaker Mark Cousins to forge a new way to approach the subject with My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock; he engaged a skilled British impressionist and comic, Alistair McGowan, to give new...

In Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara, longtime Rolling Stone contributor Emily Zemler takes a deep dive into how various beloved princesses became the cultural icons they are today, from Snow White’s lasting reign to newer, inspiring royalty like Moana.
The book weaves interviews with historians and those who helped shape the characters, including directors and voice talent, alongside concept art and memorabilia, and breaks down important themes integral to how the princesses serve as inspirations.

It may not have Doris Day singing "Que Sera, Sera" like its 1956 remake, but Alfred Hitchcock's original 1934 film "The Man Who Knew Too Much" represents some of the master's best work before he came to Hollywood. It's got the Hitchcock magic, that strange movie logic that doesn't need to make complete sense to be wildly entertaining. Like so many of the movies he made later, it embraces some classic beats: a man on the run, complex international intrigue, and as much suspense as he could wring out of every moment.
It also opens with a moment of surprising levity, following British couple Bob and Jill Lawrence (Leslie Banks and Edna Best) on their holiday in the Swiss Alps. When their French friend Louis (Pierre Fresnay) is mysteriously shot while dancing, he divulges a crucial secret to Jill -- where to find a note with dangerous information about the planned...

All through Fairytale (aka Skazka), characters recite the opening of the Divine Comedy and Dante’s preamble to his plunge into hell. But the black-and-white world Alexander Sokurov’s souls are stranded in feels closer to a kind of purgatory. A liminal wasteland of derelict buildings, rubble, and skeletal trees, it’s a nightmare yanked out of a Gustav Doré print, and no surprise one of its denizens—none other than Winston Churchill himself—should wonder early on if it is all a (very bad) dream. Churchill shares the hallucination with a number of other iconic figures from the twentieth century, a sordid cast that includes the likes of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Joseph Stalin. But Fairytale has no cast, strictly speaking: these four play themselves. The film’s sleight of hand—and the source of its disquieting allure—lies in its technical wizardry. Brought to life by Sokurov...

Many people, when faced with the old question of who they’d invite to their dream dinner party, dutifully reel off a list of historical titans, which tends to prompt further, usually unasked questions: Would these undoubtedly interesting and consequential individuals make for great company together? Would they have much to say to each each other? And would it make for a better evening than, say, a gathering of your regular, undistinguished drinking buddies? Ever-experimental Russian formalist Alexander Sokurov drolly hints at the answer in his eccentric new film “Fairytale,” though not exactly in a dinner party context: Most of us aren’t hungry to spend an evening clinking glasses with Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, after all. Still, this brief, dreamlike musing assembles them — along with other daunting dead men of history, from Churchill to Mussolini to Jesus himself — in a kind of misty purgatory where they’re at liberty to converse.

Masterpiece/PBS and Maven Screen Media are developing a five-part series based on the public and private life of Clementine Churchill, the wife of the late prime minister Winston Churchill, alongside David Thomspon and Sayoko Teitelbaum’s Origin Pictures.
Emmy-nominated “Boardwalk Empire” writer Margaret Nagle will pen the script for the series (working title: “Mrs. Churchill”) and executive produce along with Thompson, Teitelbaum and Maven co-founders Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler, as well as Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.
The show centers on the “untold story of a fiercely Independent and very modern heroine who risked everything to save her country and the world from fascism—and her husband from himself.” While several dramatized narratives have focused on Winston’s story, the series aims to highlight Clementine’s achievements.
“Winston has said that the Second World War would have been impossible without Clementine, and yet she has not been given the credit she deserves.
