The Commodore of the Chathams Islands
- Actor
Peter Saunders who was a double Commodore of the Air (Aero Club Karewa) and of the Sea (Yacht Club Kaiangaroa) spent his life at Toro Toro just North of the Port Hutt turn off.
Star of the Film "The Wizard & the Commodore - Chathams Islands" about the Moriori and the religion of Peace.
Pete was the beating heart of a vibrant community on the Chathams Islands and he is missed by many. He had arrived from Akaroa where he ran the Ice Cream stall, and was also a lover of all Horticultural things being a student at Lincoln University. Aside from running vegetable tunnel houses at Torotoro, he also managed the vegetable gardens for Jim Muirson the owner of Kaiangaroa Station.
He was an avid reader and he would wile away the hours at his Crib looking out at Mount Chudleigh; and people on the mainland would send him good history books for him to read or sometimes a box of Bacon and Sausages.
His first love however was the Sea, and he spent many a happy day either welding Cray Pots with his best friend Scotty Reretti or out on the High Seas Codding and Crayfishing.
Pete was a stickler for rules and kept the Islanders on their toes; with a planned Yacht Race that he was working to make happen, before his life was cut short - "The Peter Saunders Open Ocean Round the Chathams Yacht Race"
