World War II was still raging in May 1944. The allied invasion of Normandy — aka D-Day — was just around the corner on June 6th. Americans kept the home fires burning and escaped from the global conflict by going to the movies. Two of the biggest films of the year, Leo McCarey’s “Going My Way” and George Cukor’s “Gaslight,” recently celebrated their 80th anniversaries.
Actually, “Going My Way” had a special “Fighting Front” premiere on April 27th: 65 prints were shipped to battle fronts and shown “from Alaska to Italy, and from England to the jungles of Burma.” The sentimental comedy-drama-musical arrived in New York on May 3rd.
And it was just the uplifting film audiences needed. Bing Crosby starred as Father O’Malley, a laid-back young priest who arrives at a debt-ridden New York City church that is run by the older, set-in-his ways Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald). The elder...

Grammy lineups are lucky if they include one bona fide classic. But it is the rarest of occasions when we get three nominated together. That was the case in 1970, where The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” The 5th Dimension’s “The Age of Aquarius” and Crosby, Stills and Nash’s self-titled record were all up for Album of the Year. All three had strong narratives that could have led to possible wins … but they didn’t. Perhaps infamously, the Grammy went to jazz rock band Blood, Sweat and Tears for their successful self-titled album. While nowadays that could be dismissed as a bad win, the reality is that there were a lot of reasons why the band won and why their competitors didn’t. So let’s look more deeply into the race.

Peggy Judd and Terry Thomas Crosby, both members of the Cochise County, Arizona Election Board, have been indicted on charges related to their alleged efforts to subvert the certification of Arizona’s 2022 midterm results.
Arizona’s Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes announced on Wednesday that an Arizona grand jury had indicted Judd and Crosby on Monday. Just two years after Anita of “West Side Story” became the first non-white fictional character to inspire multiple Academy Award nominations, three others are on their way to earning the same distinction. As was the case in 1986, 30% of 2024’s female acting Oscar slots could be filled by stars of “The Color Purple,” the new version of which serves as an adaptation of the similarly titled stage musical rather than Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. If Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, and Taraji P. Henson all reap bids for their fresh takes on the parts for which Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Margaret Avery were previously recognized, the overall list of doubly Oscar-nominated fictional characters will expand to include 20 examples.
In “The Color Purple,” Barrino executes the lead role of Celie Johnson, who she initially played on Broadway as a direct successor to 2006 Tony-winning originator Lachanze. As in the book and first film,...

Zac Efron says he is “honored to hear” that his late 17 Again co-star Matthew Perry had recently expressed a wish to see the younger actor portray the Friends star in a biopic.
“I’m honored to hear he was thinking of me to play him,” Efron told People magazine yesterday during a Dallas red carpet interview for the film The Iron Claw. “We’ll see. I’d be honored to do it.”
Continued Efron: “He was a mentor to me, and we made a really cool film together. I looked up to him, I learned comedic timing from that guy. I mean, when we were filming 17 Again, it was so surreal for me to look across and have him be there, because I’ve learned so much from him, from his whole life.”
Efron portrayed a younger version of Perry’s character in the 2009 comedy fantasy 17 Again.

Matthew Perry was eager to make a movie about his life, the late actor’s friend Athenna Crosby recently told Entertainment Tonight Canada. Crosby had met with Perry for lunch the day before his unexpected passing. The “Friends” star died Oct. 28 at 54 years old. According to Crosby, Perry was keen on getting a biopic of his life off the ground and even floated the idea of having Zac Efron star as him.
“He said that he wanted to make a movie about his life,” Crosby said. “And he had worked with Zac Efron in the past on a movie. He said that he wanted Zac Efron to play him as a younger version and that he was gonna ask him soon to do that.”
“He was just looking forward to sharing more about his story and his recovery from addiction, and really championing that cause to help more people,” Crosby added.

Bill Saluga, whose trademark lines that began with “You can call me Ray” cracked up a generation of comedy fans, has died, according to his friend, Eric Brenner. He was 85.
Saluga’s March 28 death in Los Angeles was attributed to complications of heart failure and arthritis, according to his friend, Bill Minkin, who joined with him, Fred Willard, Patti Deutsch, Michael Mislove and George Memmoli in the improv troupe Ace Trucking Company.
