Couch Tomato has a new video series out that film fans might enjoy. The series will discuss where movie clichés come from. This first episode focuses on "The Chosen One."
Some of the best-known movies that explored the story of a "chosen one" include The Matrix, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Avatar and more. This video dives into the history of where this movie trope came from and the reasoning of why it has become so popular.
This is actually really fascinating and there's a lot of stuff that the video points out that I wasn't familiar with before. I learned something new today about movies thanks to this video, and that makes me happy. Watch the video for yourself and let us know what you think!

Check out these essentials even if you don’t catch the new movie.
Another week, another live-action remake of an animated classic. Well, you could argue that most of Ghost in the Shell isn’t really live action, since there’s so much that’s CG. You could also say it’s not a remake so much as a new adaptation of a Japanese comic book. Regardless, a lot of it is a pretty faithful copy, so a good percentage of this week’s list of Movies to Watch could apply to the manga or the anime versions of the story (I’m making it a given that you should see the original). That’s good for any of you boycotting the new movie due to its whitewashing controversy.
These 12 titles are worth seeing either way:

Wolverine is basically Old Man Peter Pan.
A new TV ad for Logan suggests that you don’t go see “The Beauty” this weekend, as in the just released Beauty and the Beast, but go see “The Beast” instead. I agree with the recommendation, yet if Wolverine is to be likened to any character from a Disney classic, it should only be Peter Pan. And with Logan the comparison is especially interesting.
Oddly enough, Hugh Jackman recently starred as the villain Blackbeard in a prequel to the Peter Pan story as we know it, and it was properly — pun intended — panned. Logan is the better reworking of the material, which originated with dramatic and literary works by J.M. Barrie. This time Jackman is the Peter figure in a kind of epilogue to the tale. Forget Hook, because Logan offers the only old man Peter Pan we need.
