Representation and inclusion matter. Everyone should be able to see themselves reflected in characters in film and TV and not merely in the lip service one-dimensional stories often seen, especially in relation to those with disabilities. My Eyes are Up Here, directed by Nathan Morris, is a perfect example of how to do it the right way. A classic story of waking up, bleary-eyed next to someone who you don’t know very well and the ensuing panic upon discovering a split condom. It’s a widely universal tale and treated exactly that way by Morris. The New Zealand-born director immediately connected with Aminder Virdee’s script whose authenticity and raw character-led narrative he could easily see translated visually. My Eyes Are Up Here is at its very core a familiar tale of girl meets boy, yet goes beyond that simplistic framing to reflect on the way we treat people we deem as different.

Janelle Monaé is making more waves with the release of the second music video from her latest album The Age of Pleasure. She and director Alan Ferguson (who also worked on “Lipstick Lover,” Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky” and Lizzo’s “Good as Hell”) collaborated to bring “Waterslide” to life.
Like “Lipstick Lover,” the video for “Waterslide” is marked by vintage flower-power style and colorful, grainy shots. In the clip, Janelle and a crew party and perform — with her musical collaborator Nate Wonder on the drums — at a lush,...

It’s the morning after, and Sonya (Jillian Mercado) moans, rolls over...and falls out of bed. Many readers will doubtless relate. It’s not because of her disability, beyond the fact that anyone might be at least temporarily disabled at 8am after a night of too many whisky sours. Tom (Ben Cura) is woken by the noise and tries to help her, but she insists on taking care of herself – a good call, given that he too plainly has difficulty standing. He needs coffee. He suggests they have some together, but when she discovers that the condom broke, Sonya is anxious to get to a pharmacy, and she would rather do that by herself.
Unable to help, Tom is at a loss. “I’m an assistant,” he feebly protests. “That’s what I do. I assist.”
He is not her assistant. He works for the place where she’s currently doing a modelling job.

Maribel is an outspoken lawyer who is fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She also doesn’t let anyone play with her. There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to representation on Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q. But one conversation arguably caught the most attention during season two: the sex scene involving Leo Sheng’s Micah Lee and Jillian Mercado’s Maribel Suarez.
The sequence is the perfect amount of silly, sensual and sensitive. It’s the kind of moment hardly seen on TV, and not just because of who it features: a Chinese-American trans man and an Afro-Latina with a physical disability. It’s a rare moment because it’s more than a sex scene.
It’s an intimacy scene, one that bares both flesh ...

“The whole world ’bout to testify,” Janelle Monáe promises on the song and music video for “Turntables.” It is the multifaceted artist’s first song since 2019’s “That’s Enough,” for the Disney+ live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp.
The song is featured in All In: The Fight for Democracy. Directed by Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés (The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion), the Amazon Studios documentary is about voter suppression which is being released in tandem with the studio’s #AllInForVoting bipartisan campaign. The campaign intends to inspire voter turnout during the 2020 presidential election season. And what is more inspiring than a Janelle Monáe song? Her last album, Dirty Computer, which was released two years ago, ended with the anthemic “Americans.”
Working with long-time collaborator Nate “Rocket” Wonder, Monáe amplifies the voices of people putting themselves on the front line. Directed by Child, the song’s accompanying emotion...
