Let me just start by saying this: In the world we live in, the poor always get exploited by the rich. There is no way around this cold, hard fact, as we are all part of a capitalist society that most of us have accepted. I understand, this is not exactly what you would expect to read at the start of a movie review, but Avan Jogia’s debut feature, Door Mouse, sort of demands this contemplation. The Canadian actor-singer, who previously directed two very exciting shorts, shows his full potential here and confidently tells a kind of story that we might have heard before, but never really with this much style and precision. A kind of uber-coolness oozes out of literally every frame of Door Mouse, but the movie doesn’t just rely on that. Instead, it builds up a very relevant story, chapter by chapter, and delivers a scintillating climax in the end.

Played by Hayley Law, Mouse is a graphic artist and burlesque performer who takes a predictable but well-drawn route through the mean streets
Part noir thriller and part punky comic-book subcult story, this Canadian-made debut from writer-director Avan Jogia is a bit hit and miss but impressive all the same. Credit is due as much to lead Hayley Law, better known as a recording artist, who has a knack for deadpan line delivery and a tremendous screen presence.
Law plays Mouse, a young graphic artist who draws pornographic stories for a very niche indie comic book market. It’s not making her a lot of money so she also performs in a shady burlesque-strip club run by strict but protective matriarch Mama. Mouse has a weird platonic bond with Ugly (Keith Powers), whose name is an obvious misnomer. He follows her around all the time and is almost ignored by everyone else,...

Hollywood’s Streaming Gold Rush Keeps Ontario Soundstages at Full Capacity Despite Netflix’s Stumble
Click here to read the full article.
With Hollywood in need of cost-effective programming as the streamers begin to tighten their belts, local film studio operators see an opening for Ontario as the major studios reach for generous currency and tax credit savings.
Ontario is projected to add another 2.3 million square feet of studio space to an existing 3.7 million square feet of soundstages and production space over the next four years. Amid speculation about whether the video streaming market is finally oversaturated, studio operators in and around Toronto do not expect major streaming services to greatly cut back on content spending — at least in the near future.
“Netflix, Amazon, Apple, they’re still doing their production. The filtering down of [content] cutbacks, we haven’t felt that,” Paul Bronfman, chairman and CEO of studio operator Comweb Corp., tells The Hollywood Reporter amid talk of a Hollywood spending slump just as the Toronto Film Festival gets underway.

This article contains some spoilers for Spider-man: No Way Home
Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon have just made one of the highest-grossing movies of all time! What are they going to do next? Well, the answer probably isn’t “Go to Disneyland,” because Disney has likely already brought their biggest money-makers to the happiest place on earth. But the talents behind 2021’s most popular movie Spider-Man: No Way Home certainly have a lot of good work ahead of them!
Tom Holland
Before swinging into Captain America: Civil War as Spider-Man, Tom Holland impressed viewers by playing Billy Elliot on stage and a teenager surviving a tsunami in J.A. Bayona’s The Impossible. Holland’s natural charm and youthful wit made him a pleasing screen presence. But as Peter Parker graduates high school and moves onto the real world, it’s clear that Holland is ready for more complex and adult roles.

Hannah Marks just wants to work. Acting as early as age 11, and appearing in shows like Weeds and Necessary Roughness while still a teenager, Marks started as an actor, like her mother, Nova Ball. In the last five years, though, she’s gone from relative anonymity into writing and starring in Banana Split, working her way towards her solo directorial feature, Mark, Mary & Some Other People, which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and is now in theaters and on VOD.
When The Film Stage chatted with Marks she was shooting her newest film in New Zealand, an Amazon-backed drama-comedy starring John Cho titled Don’t Make Me Go. Also attached to the adaptation of John Green’s Turtles All The Way Down, she’s making waves, writing scripts, and directing high-profile actors as she hurtles toward her 29th birthday. Her scripts often tend toward the talkative, depicting friendships and...

After the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday night denied a request to issue emergency relief blocking Texas’ new law that bans abortion at six weeks and, say opponents, effectively eliminates access to abortions statewide, some big names in entertainment expressed their opinions about the legislation.
A group of prominent actors, musicians and other artists and companies swiftly responded to the news on social media. Reese Witherspoon, Alyssa Milano, Dua Lipa, Kerry Washington, St. Vincent, Eva Longoria Baston, Bad Robot and P!nk were among them. Washington also shared a link to a Planned Parenthood petition which, among other things, maintains that “health care — including safe, legal abortion — is a human right.

“Mark, Mary & Some Other People” opens with one of the strangest meet cutes in recent memory: Slacker dog-walker Mark (Ben Rosenfield) and brash singer Mary (Hayley Law) reconnect for the first time since college at a convenience store, where the former joins the latter in the bathroom — eventually singing loudly and crazily to boot — while she takes a pregnancy test. That introduction is emblematic of the jaunty weirdness of Hannah Marks’ romantic comedy, which concerns its protagonists’ ensuing decision to attempt an open relationship. Embellishing stock formula with plenty of personality, it’s

Mark, Mary & Some Other People represents a leap for Hannah Marks, the 28-year-old director premiering her first solo directorial narrative feature at the Tribeca Film Festival. After writing the acclaimed, easy-going Banana Split and co-helming After Everything with Joey Power in 2018, Marks returns with an effort aimed at a similar topic: young love. Staked in the evolving and devolving of a relationship between 20-somethings, Mark, Mary & Some Other People finds the director exploring polyamory through the lens of an open relationship.
Like Marks’ previous efforts, her latest work features quippy writing based on realistic, observant portrayals of young people, like those who met at an undie run in college. Mark (Ben Rosenfield) encounters Mary (Hayley Law) at a pharmacy as the latter buys a pregnancy test, attempting to remember his face and his name. He comforts her while she pees on a stick by singing an original, loud, gravelly song—sweet,...

The power imbalance is there from the start: Mark (Ben Rosenfield) goes googly-eyed at the sight of his old college acquaintance Mary (Hayley Law), who is so busy fussing with her own dramas that she can’t quite place the guy at the convenience store who’s staring at her. It’s a re-meet-cute that sets off Hannah Marks’ sophomore directorial outing, “Mark, Mary & Some Other People,” as Mary not only remembers Mark, but soon ensnares him in said dramas, channeling that tricky power imbalance into something like actual intimacy. Ain’t love grand?
In Marks’ world it is, at least for a while. The actress and filmmaker’s first directorial outing, “After Everything,” similarly explored a young couple in the throes of both a big love and a big problem, and Marks’ love stories strike a delicate balance; they are always funny, but never at the cost of actual human empathy.

Katherine Langford has yet to miss in her young career.
The Australian actor already has a mighty impressive resume that includes two hit Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why and Cursed, as well as two esteemed films in Knives Out and Love, Simon. In her latest return to the screen, Langford stars in Brian Duffield’s Spontaneous, a high-concept sci-fi comedy that is currently registering a 97% score among Rotten Tomatoes critics.
Spontaneous focuses on Langford’s Mara and her budding relationship with Charlie Plummer’s Dylan. The catch is that their love story begins amid a rising pandemic involving spontaneously exploding teenagers at their high school. Even though the film was shot in early 2018, the film has direct parallels to the novel coronavirus pandemic, something none of the creatives could have seen coming.

A yarn about exploding teens is an intriguing comment on culture wars, Gen-z despair and even Covid quarantine
Surely somebody somewhere, is writing a PhD thesis right now on existential nihilism, self-harm and postmodern horror in American YA fiction, TV and films of the 2010s onwards. If not, I may write one myself, because there is a rich seam to draw on, and this latest one is sure to become part of the canon. Think The Fault in Our Stars meets 13 Reasons Why meets Chuck Palahniuk meets David Cronenberg’s Scanners. That last work is specifically referenced here because the film’s core conceit is that one day, for no logical reason, a teenager physically explodes during a maths class, splattering her fellow students with blood.
Narrator-protagonist Mara is sitting right behind her exploding classmate and gets a particular drenching. The experience is, of course, traumatic for her, her best...

"We're not just stealing, we're sending a message." Saban Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie crime action-thriller titled Echo Boomers, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Seth Savoy. The title is another reference to Millennials, as the term "Echo Boomers" is a synonym for this generation. Disillusioned by a world where economic odds seem stacked against them, and based on a true story, the film’s protagonists form a crime ring and begin breaking into the wealthiest Chicago homes and taking what they want. Echo Boomers stars Patrick Schwarzenegger, Michael Shannon, Alex Pettyfer, Hayley Law, Lesley Ann Warren, and Oliver Cooper. It's easy to spin this as a very negative, dangerous story of criminals, but it's really about people taking back what was taken from them. It's not a new "Robin Hood" story, as they keep it all for themselves, but the rest of this is...

"It happened again. A lot." Paramount has debuted a trailer for a wacky dark comedy titled Spontaneous, a remarkably strange love story of sorts. This is a film about two high schoolers who fall in love with each other. But that's not all. Students at their school start inexplicably dying when their heads explode without warning - spontaneous combustion. This feels like one of those jokes from high school turned into a script for a movie. And yes it's R-rated, not some family-friendly junk. Spontaneous stars Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer as Mara and Dylan, along with Yvonne Orji, Hayley Law, Rob Huebel, and Piper Perabo. This trailer still plays like an upbeat coming-of-age comedy, even though it's clear there are some horror elements to the film. Hopefully it balances all these tones and absurdity with some fun humor. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Brian Duffield's Spontaneous, from...

This Katy Keene review contains spoilers.
Katy Keene Episode 8
“When a crisis hits, a family comes together…no matter what.”
There’s a great line in Noah Baumbach’s Mr. Jealousy about how a character in that underrated romcom often “knocks on the door of profundity and runs away.” It’s a sentiment that frequently ran through my brain during this latest Katy Keene, an episode that took several moonshots at addressing everything from the importance of chosen families to the necessity of Lgbtq+ acceptance without any actually leaving the stratosphere.
Don’t get me wrong, the series continues to have its heart in the right place. It’s just that last week’s episode felt like such a turning point for the series that to gloss over the aftermath of Jorge and Bernardo’s gay-bashing felt like a cop out. Yes, that storyline provides the impetus for the dramatic...
