Marvel had a rough year in 2023. Many of its properties underperformed, and they lost their big villain due to Jonathan Majors being fired. Looking forward to their upcoming slate, comic fans have been excited about some of the studio’s projects over the next few years. Will these films help Marvel regain control? The upcoming Thunderbolts film has been one that fanboys have been hoping to see since the MCU started. With some recent news about the property coming up, it seems like the right time to break down what we know about the production.
Who Are The Thunderbolts?
The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1997 in an issue of The Incredible Hulk. They seemed to be a new group of superheroes that had arrived on the scene and gained acclaim very quickly. The reader was informed that the group was actually a group of supervillains led by Baron Zemo.

Wisin & Yandel’s first album, Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, came out in 2000. For millennial hip-hop heads, that was the year Outkast’s Stankonia and Ghostface Killah’s Supreme Clientele dropped. For rock fans, that’d be the year Radiohead released Kid A. And for zoomers, well, that was three years before Olivia Rodrigo was even born.
All of that is a long-winded way of saying Wisin has been around for a minute now. But if his new album, Mr. W, is any indication, he’s an O.G. who...

“I’m always waiting for something different, a different and new challenge,” reveals Anika Noni Rose. A worthy challenge arose in the form of Anton Chekhov, and the latest Broadway revival of his classic play “Uncle Vanya.” The actress had never performed in a Chekhov play before, but for her first Broadway role in 10 years, she “thought it was just time to do something for me that was going to be very different.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Rose portrays Yelena in the revival, who is wedded to the older and egotistical professor Serebryakov (Alfred Molina). At their rural estate, the glamorous Yelena expresses boredom and begins to question whether her life choices have led her to the right destination. When Yelena agrees to help Sonia (Alison Pill) discover if her feelings for Astrov (William Jackson Harper) are reciprocated, she unknowingly unleashes a fiery passion in him which overwhelms the estate.

For a lot of MCU fans, and Black Widow fans in particular, one of the most baffling choices the movies have made so far came in "Avengers: Endgame," when Black Widow/Natasha (Scarlett Johannsen) and Hawkeye/Clint (Jeremy Renner) tried to throw themselves off a cliff before the other could do it first. The cliff-jumping part made sense — one of them needed to die to save the world, and it was in character for both of them to sacrifice themself so the other could live. The questionable part was when Natasha successfully stopped Clint and flung herself to her death. It was a sad yet heroic end for her character, sure, but on a meta-level, wouldn't it make more sense for the movie to kill Clint?
No disrespect to Clint of course, but he was the less interesting of the two Avengers. He served his role well and had a heartwarming friendship with Natasha,...

It wouldn’t be the Marvel Cinematic Universe without teases, glances, and surprises around every corner. And keeping up the tradition of sneak peeks, Florence Pugh, who debuted in the MCU as Yelena Belova in Black Widow, has sent the Marvel fandom into a frenzy with her latest post on Instagram.
In this post, Pugh can be seen in costume from the sets of the highly anticipated movie Thunderbolts. Not just the post, but the caption too seems to have some easter eggs in it. There’s surely a lot to unpack with this one.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie is now in production in Atlanta, and Florence Pugh has shared a sneaky little set video on Instagram, which honestly shows off more than I would have expected. Those Marvel snipers must have been on break.

The Thunderbolts set video begins with Pugh exiting her trailer in full costume, with her hair looking shorter than it was in Black Widow. As she moves into the Atlanta studio, we see pieces of large sets before she comes across director Jake Schreier. You can see the Thunderbolts logo on the back of a chair as well as a brief snippet of footage on the monitor, which shows Yelena pointing a gun at someone. With any other movie, this might not seem particularly revealing, but for a Marvel movie… well, I’d be putting my will in order.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts is one of the highly anticipated films from the franchise that will hit theaters in 2025. After what seemed forever regarding the last part of the series, one of the foremost epics in the world of anime, “Attack on Titan” concluded its “trip”, which actually started back in 2013, in a way that is both impressive and somewhat disappointing. Let us take things from the beginning though.

After the last season brought the whole story into perspective, and particularly the fact that the events of the present are parts of a millennium long history, the set is prepared for an all out battle involving every character that has survived so far. As such, the Rumbling, directed by Eren, aims at destroying all humanity outside the Paradise Island, with the Colossal Titans killing countless people, including Ramzi and his brother and Grisha's parents, and destroying civilizations all over the world. Though it took far too many years to get a solo film for the titular character, Marvel's "Black Widow" finally arrived in 2021. Despite the fact that Natasha Romanov (Scarlett Johansson) had already died in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by that point, at least we got a proper send-off for the character and the introduction of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, the clear Mvp of the film.
We also got a really fun performance from David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian, who, along with Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), acted as sleeper Russian agents living in Ohio with the young Yelena (Violet McGraw) and Natasha (Ever Anderson). At the beginning of the film, these four are living as a family undercover, but when they're made, they have to take off in a rush for a flight to Cuba, in fear for their lives. Marvel’s Thunderbolts is bringing a fresh narrative to the table, with David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova at the center of its intriguing storyline. Harbour, in a recent interview with ScreenRant, shed light on the complex dynamics between these two characters.
He revealed that the film delves into the characters’ shared history, particularly their time as spies in the Midwest. This aspect of their past plays a significant role in the movie, adding depth to their relationship. For instance, it mirrors the depth seen in the ‘Black Widow’ film, notably in the scene featuring the song “American Pie.”
What stands out in Harbour’s description is the nuanced relationship between Red Guardian and Yelena. Despite Yelena’s apparent disdain for him, she relies on him in ways that she might not fully understand. This reflects the often complicated nature of real-life relationships, where the...

Superhero movies are ubiquitous at this point, and the biggest name in the game is Marvel. Not just any Marvel, mind you, but Marvel Studios. Starting with 2008’s “Iron Man,” Marvel Studios and its now-president Kevin Feige started experimenting with the idea of telling one long, interconnected story over multiple movies with different lead characters, crossing over from time to time – just like in the comics. That experiment proved successful with 2012’s “The Avengers,” and it’s been hit after hit ever since.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow, even in the wake of the conclusive nature of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” and it can be hard to keep track of what’s coming down the pike. Below, we’ve assembled a list of every confirmed MCU movie currently in the works, when it’s coming out, who’s in it, and what we know about each project so far.

In the years since "Avengers: Endgame" brought a close to the "Infinity Saga", the superhero studio quickly pivoted to replacing its original line-up with a host of new and relatively lesser-known figures. 2021's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" led the charge of fresh faces that also included the ensemble cast of "Eternals," Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova in "Black Widow," Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," and the team-up between Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) with Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in "The Marvels." Are these characters meant to ring in the next generation of Avengers (or, in Yelena's case, Thunderbolts)? That appears to be the plan, but with the next couple of major crossover movies already spoken for (hint: these include "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and "Avengers: Secret Wars"), Kevin Feige will be hard-pressed...

Loyalty is essential to a person’s character, and breaking away from the norm to explore other avenues often comes at a price. For Florence Pugh, her signing to play Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe rubbed people in the indie film community the wrong way. Some actors see the Marvel community as a blight against their craft. In contrast, others embrace the opportunity to star in a money-printing blockbuster alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood. In a Time Next Generation Leaders profile, Pugh admits she’s experienced backlash for starring in Marvel properties like Black Widow and the Disney+ series Hawkeye.
“So many people in the indie film world were really pissed off at me. They were like, ‘Great, now she’s gone forever,'” Pugh told Time. “And I’m like, no, I’m working as hard as I used to work. I’ve always done back-to-back movies.

Florence Pugh revealed to Time magazine that a lot of people in the independent film community were “pissed off” at her when she decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pugh made a name for herself with acclaimed roles in indies such as “Lady Macbeth” and “Midsommar” before earning an Oscar nomination for Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women.” She joined the MCU as Yelena Belova in “Black Widow” and reprised the role in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.” Yelena will be back in Marvel’s upcoming tentpole film “Thunderbolts.”

If you’re one of the many folks who flocked to see Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3, you no doubt wiped away a tear or ten when you watched Rocket Raccoon’s tragic backstory play out. But, is his origin the most traffic MCU Original of them all? Indeed, the MCU has dominated cinema for the past decade and a half and has given audiences some of the most memorable on-screen moments in history. Fans have developed close personal relationships with the heroes and characters to the point that they feel as if they’re real people existing in the real world. While that may not be true, it’s still a testament to how emotionally powerful the MCU has become that it allows audiences to empathize and care about completely fictional beings.

One of the more interesting projects on Marvel Studio's slate is "Thunderbolts," a movie that will bring together some of Marvel's shadier characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a sort of Dark Avengers. Marvel has already released a concept art line-up that includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Fontaine, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes, David Harbour's Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Wyatt Russell back as Dollar General Captain America, aka John Walker, better known as US Agent.
We also know that Steven Yeun and "The Bear" actor Ayo Edebiri is in the cast, although these two will be new MCU characters with Yeun heavily rumored to be playing comic book fan-favorite character Sentry, an insanely powerful hero who has a very, very dark side. Like literally, there's a supervillain that lives within him and is an extension of his own powerful self.

Florence Pugh is an actor in high demand thanks to her numerous excellent performances in movies of various genres. Some superhero stories truly glide on the idea of a hero’s redemption. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have seen characters like Tony Stark, Stephen Strange, Natasha Romanoff, and Gamora make up for their past sins via heroism. A viewer’s love for a great redemption story occasionally mixes itself with the concept of a villain so likable that you no longer want to root against them.

Israel’s submission for the international feature Oscar, the intimate, prize-winning drama “Cinema Sabaya,” is one of the country’s relatively few movies centering on a collaboration between Jews and Arabs. It follows a video workshop where eight women, four Jewish and four Muslim, are assigned to film their lives. As they share their footage, barriers are broken, beliefs are challenged and they learn more about each other and themselves. Based on helmer-writer Orit Fouks Rotem’s experience as a teacher and the real women she encountered, the film is full of life, love, humor and authenticity without being didactic. At the same time, it cleverly questions the ethics and responsibility of filmmaking. This Kino Lorber pickup will open Stateside in February.

When Hawkeye debuted in the fall of 2021, all the colorful lights and Christmas trees crowding the sets were regarded as nothing more than that: decorations. The Jeremy Renner- and Hailee Steinfeld-starrer was a Marvel show that just so happened to be set during the holidays. But, in truth, Hawkeye is a Christmas story that just so happens to be a Marvel show – and it should absolutely be added into your annual Yuletide rotation.
Let’s start with the most obvious arrow in the quiver: Christmas is its own character in Hawkeye, arguably the fourth lead after Clint Barton, Kate Bishop, and Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox). Almost every scene carries some reminder of the season, be it a lone string of lights in Maya’s apartment or B-roll of a snowy December in New York City. Even the abandoned K·B Toys holds special significance for anyone who grew up in the 1980s,...

When characters have been around for decades, a number of people tend to leave their creative fingerprints on them. For example, Captain America was created in 1940 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for Timely Comics. He was a World War II soldier that went above and beyond the call of duty to aid in the fight against the Axis powers, particularly the Nazis. Later, when the company transitioned to Marvel, Stan Lee brought Cap into the modern day in 1963's "The Avengers" #4 as part of the popular super team. From there, a number of extremely talented people like Ed Brubaker, Mark Gruenwald, Roger Stern, Mark Waid, and Ta-Nehisi Coates have crafted character-defining stories for the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan. But as a character goes from creator to creator, they may change slightly. While it's certainly possible for people (fictional or otherwise) to be multifaceted in their personalities, those changes...

Marvel's "Thunderbolts" movie is still over a year away, but that won't stop Marvel fans — and the team here at /Film — from speculating about what the introduction of the "Suicide Squad"-like group of ragtag antiheroes will mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. There have been plenty of early theories swirling around about the group that includes Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), and Antonia Dreykov (Olga Kurylenko), but Harbour is apparently ready to throw a metaphorical bomb into all of them.
/Film's Bill Bria spoke with Harbour ahead of his upcoming film "Violent Night," and managed to squeeze in a question about the "Thunderbolts" film. When asked about the movie, in which he plays Alexei aka Red Guardian, Harbour says that he hasn't read the full script yet, but that there's something...

The mysterious Val shows up once again in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and as always, she’s an enigma. And if you’re thinking to yourself “What do you mean she showed up ‘again?'” — no one could blame you. She’s been pretty minor so far, but that clearly is about to change, so let’s refresh.
Val is a new character in Phase Four, played by “Veep” and “Seinfeld” star (and Emmys record-setter) Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She’s sassy and sarcastic, and boasts an incredible stripe of purple in her hair. But how she fits into the puzzle at large is a bit baffling so far.
Of course, Val originated in Marvel Comics where, as in the MCU, her full name is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.. Created by Jim Steranko in 1967, she started as an Italian jet setter who becomes an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
