I’m no historian, but America circa 1857 was a brutal, eye-opening time in the nation’s history. During these dark days, blood and bodies enriched the soil while poisoning the minds and hearts of people fighting to survive. Today, Pete Berg takes audiences back to a time of strife for Netflix‘s latest limited series, American Primeval. The six-episode series hails from The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith, with Berg directing and executive producing. On Tuesday, Netflix unveiled the show’s January 9, 2025, release date and first-look images for the upcoming series, depicting an oppressive atmosphere with bone-crunching combat, unions crumbling to pieces, and non-negotiable alliances paving a road to ruin.
Here’s the official logline for American Primeval courtesy of Netflix:

Netflix has revealed a first look at American Primeval, a Western television series that will premiere on January 9, 2025. All six one-hour episodes will be available on that day.
The series comes from director/executive producer Pete Berg (Friday Night Lights), writer/creator/executive producer Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), and executive producers Eric Newman (Griselda) and Alex Gayner.
This is America…1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, and innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion.
There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival. American Primeval is a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land.

Devotion is a film directed by J.D. Dillard starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell.
This is a movie that delivers what it promises, no more and no less, and does just enough (or even a little less) in the story department and ferociously and devotedly hangs onto the technical department of recreation and, above all, the action scenes.
Premise
During the Fifties, in the Cold War times, two very different pilots will be forced to fight the enemy and test their friendship in combat.
About the Movie Devotion (2022)
Devotion is one of those movies about heroes in a war with all against each other, all the clichés we can find in this genre applied to a historic recreation that is technically brilliant, but loses power because of its simple screenplay with barely any depth to it and which bases its strength on the excellent scenes of fighter pilot aircraft in combat.

“Devotion” adapts the remarkable true story of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, Navy pilots following WWII and before The Korean War who had each other’s backs no matter what. Ensign Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) was the first African American carrier pilot to serve in the navy. He found his calling from a super young age, realizing it fully when he saw a poster advertising flying for the Navy at Ohio State University. Lieutenant Tom Hudner passed up Harvard to go to the Naval Academy, and he became Jesse’s wingman.
Based on the book by Adam Makos, “Devotion” follows Jesse and Tom’s journey alongside Fighting 32, their assigned Flight Squadron, as tension built following World War II to bleed into The Korean War. Alongside the starring pair, Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas and more appear.

The Los Angeles premiere of “Devotion,” starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, served as both a salute to the legacy and lineage of Korean War heroes Jesse L. Brown, the first African American Navy aviator, and Thomas Hudner, his devoted wingman, as well as a celebration of the familial bonds forged during the shoot.
“This movie, in so many ways, is a family effort,” director Jd Dillard said, introducing the film’s cast and crew before a packed house inside the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood on Tuesday night. “We all moved together like the boys shipping off to war to make this movie.”
Dillard then asked the few dozen descendants of Brown and Hudner in attendance to stand for a round of applause. It’s overwhelming to share these moments with the families, Dillard told Variety on the red carpet, but, he added, “There’s no other way to do it.

If you believe the marketing, then Devotion, an inspirational aerial combat epic set during the Korean War, would like very much to be thought of as Top Gun: Corsair.
Strip away the IMAX scope, the booming score and the flyboy swagger, however, and all that remains is a hollow shell of bland, beaten-down war movie tropes that leave Jonathan Majors to effectively fend for himself with his deeply-rooted lead portrayal of the first Black aviator in Navy history.
Based on the book of the same name by Adam Makos, which described the friendship between Majors’ Jesse Brown and his fellow wingman, Tom Hudner (played by Glen Powell), the story has been brought to the screen by director J.D. Dillard (himself the son of only the second African American member of the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels squadron) with a great deal of respect but insufficient dramatic depth.

Charmed is finally giving its fans the “Parkerita” fix they’ve been desperately craving. Following a six-episode absence from the CW drama, Nick Hargrove returns as Parker Caine on Friday (8/7c), and it looks like Maggie is ready to welcome him back into her life with open arms.
We last saw Parker leaving Hilltowne at the end of Charmed‘s first season finale. “After everything we’ve been through, you can’t leave,” Maggie pleaded. “There has to be a way for us to be together.” Parker offered a solution (“What if you come with me? Let’s both get out of this stupid town!

The CW's reboot of Charmed may be coming back for a sophomore run, but it looks like there will be some big changes.
Showrunner Carter Covington is bowing out after just one season and is being replaced by Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, according to Deadline.
The pair are said to be taking the series in a new direction, one that will focus more on the supernatural aspect as opposed to the family side of things.
While that's not to say the family dynamics will be left in the rear-view mirror, it does sound like the creative forces are more confident in taking the show in a darker direction.

Charmed season 2 has been confirmed, and is making some changes behind the scenes...
A spell is being cast on the Charmed reboot. THR reports that the current showrunner has left the series, which has provided very decent ratings for the network at home and strong international sales so far abroad.
Carter Covington is being replaced by Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro on Charmed season 2, and a new "creative direction" is being targeted for the trio of budding witches, with the series set to "lean harder into its supernatural storylines and less into the family dynamic" that formed the narrative anchor of season 1.
Kruger and Shapiro previously co-created Salvation for CBS and served as executive producers on the nixed Halle Berry-starring Extant. Elsewhere, they were behind USA Network's Necessary Roughness, and Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce.
More on Charmed season 2 as it arrives, so check back soon.

For a midseason premiere, that wasn’t half bad!
Structurally speaking, Charmed (2018) Season 1 Episode 10 was the biggest success thus far. Finally, storylines are beginning to come together and make for interesting television.
Opting to stray away from the “monster of the week” trope they’ve held on to so tightly, Charmed instead chose to focus more on the arcs which have spanned across the entire season.
Boy, did that work in their favor.
I have believed from the pilot if the writers would just focus on developing more intricate plot lines that aid in world-building, the show would inevitably take a turn for the better.
I’m extremely glad to see I was right.

Previously, things moved fast in all the wrong ways. A demon was introduced, the sisters would make a mess in failing and Harry would ultimately come to save them.

Jimmy Tatro and Scott Porter have been cast in an upcoming episode of the first season of the CW’s “Charmed,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Tatro, who is best known for “American Vandal” and a recent stint on the second season of “The Guest Book,” will guest star as a “bad boy” angel named Gideon, while Porter will guest star as “good guy” angel Levi.
Gideon and Levi are a brother duo from a show within the show — a 1990s TV drama called “Heaven’s Vice” — on which they are tasked with saving mankind from the devil and his minions. Through a “magical mix-up,” they cross over into the real world and arrive in Hilltown via a portal, understandably confused and “quite the handful” for the sisters.
This episode is set to air in the spring, towards the end of the show’s first season.

Charmed received quite a mixed reaction when viewers learned the popular series was being rebooted with a different twist. Now that the first nine episodes have aired, a fan base has begun to develop. The show is on hiatus for winter break, but when will Charmed return in 2019? The winter finale of Charmed was intense. The Power of Three really can’t catch a break when it comes to love, can they?
Charmed (2018) Season 1 Episode 7 threw one of the sisters for yet another heartbreaking loop: Maggie’s boyfriend is a demon.
Only a half demon, though. Which leads me to believe the show will be following in its predecessors' footsteps by recreating one of the best storylines Og Charmed ever attempted: The half-demon antagonist whose human side falls in love with a Charmed One.
In the original, that half-demon was Cole, played by powerhouse Julian MacMahon.
After his human side fell for youngest sister Phoebe, the sisters set out to help Cole rid himself of his father’s demonic blood. Throughout the course of multiple seasons, Cole managed to flip-flop from human to demon and back again, before ultimately ending up on the dark side, as the source of all evil.

Nick Hargrove is set as a series regular in the CW’s Charmed dramedy reboot, from Jane the Virgin creator-showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and CBS TV Studios.
Penned by Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin and created with Urman, the Charmed reboot centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.
Hargrove plays Parker. President of the Phi Delta Upsilon fraternity, Parker is the quintessential upper-class pretty boy with a wild streak and a sensitive side. His charm and confidence catch Maggie’s (Jeffery) eye when he defends her from a rude customer at her waitressing job.
Hargrove initially was cast as a recurring, then bumped up to series regular.
