In her latest film “Depravity,” Victoria Justice steps away from her typically wholesome roles into mature territory. The thriller follows college roommates Grace and Aria, played by Justice and Devon Ross, as they investigate their mysterious neighbor Mr. Evers. Their investigation leads them to discover stolen artwork and spirals into a dangerous situation.
Justice portrays Grace, a thrill-seeking law student drawn to danger. “She finds the excitement and risk really appealing,” Justice said. For her first intimate scene filmed on the first day, Justice was nervous but credited the director with creating a comfortable environment. Her co-star Taylor John Smith regularly checked on her comfort level to ease tensions.
Ross depicts the more reserved Aria, who is still coping with past trauma. “Aria is an introverted creative type,” Ross explained. “She likely doesn’t want more darkness in her life.” Despite Aria’s reluctance, Ross enjoyed filming physical fight scenes...

Set in 1914, amidst the early months of World War I, The Last Front takes us to a lesser-known period of history. Director Julien Hayet-Kerknawi brings us to Flanders, Belgium, to witness the horrific “Rape of Belgium” as invading German forces unleash violence upon innocent civilians.
We follow farmer Leonard Lambert and his family, whose quiet lives are shattered with the arrival of the brutal Lieutenant Laurentz and his regiment. Though not a large production, Hayet-Kerknawi’s debut feature aims high. With its focus on ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, the film spotlights a tragic chapter that has faded from memory.
While an imperfect work, strong central performances help elevate the dramatic tale. Iain Glen and up-and-coming actress Sasha Luss anchor the film with grounded and feeling portrayals of parents fighting to protect their children from the ravages of war.

Iain Glen, Ser Jorah Mormont in Game Of Thrones, is feisty as ever as a family man facing down the tumultuous start of World War I in The Last Front by Belgian filmmaker Julien Hayet-Kerknawi, the first release by his new indie label Enigma. It opens on 250 screens.
Metrograph Pictures is out with Good One, its first title since expanding into theatrical releasing under the leadership of former A24 executive David Laub. The debut feature by India Donaldson has great reviews at 96% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes and starts in limited release on three screens in New York and LA.
The theatrical market is pretty complicated right now and original independent films have fewer champions. These new indie distributors — and there are others — see a necessity and a business proposition in nurturing them.
“There is still very much an audience for these movies when they are really good,” Laub tells Deadline.

The Last Front
Director Julien Hayet-Kerknawi's war film, The Last Front, is set in a small Belgian village during the first days of World War I. Widower Leonard Lambert (Iain Glen) tends his farm and looks after his children. Tension mounts between him and his son, Adrien (James Downie), who has entered into a love affair with Louise Janssen (Sasha Luss), a young woman outside of his social class. Leonard warns him that he's asking Louise to make the same sacrifice his mother made, and stresses the hardship of life on a farm that grinds a woman down. He pleads with Adrien to let her go, but the pair are committed to one another. Meanwhile, two German officers, a father (Philippe Brenninkmeyer) and son (Joe Anderson), are locked in their own tense relationship, and when the two families cross paths, the impulsive young men ignite a spark that engulfs Leonard,...

Written and directed by James Croke, Latency is about an agoraphobic gamer trying a new technological device that reads one's brain. As the film progresses, the device does more than that. Said gamer is Hana, played by Sasha Luss. Hana is a so-called "has been" who glimpses a chance to win back glory, and also money, through a gaming tournament. The new device, which sits in the back of her head, improves her reaction time, and allows her to type or play without even touching the keyboard or screen. The calibrating scenes, essentially a training montage, are fun, and there is a promising one titled "pain". It promised too much; Hana only had to cut herself a little. Similarly, the tournament is disappointing as the...

"The more you wear the Omnia, the faster it will learn." Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an indie tech horror thriller called Latency, from filmmaker James Croke. This is another of these intriguing A.I. horror films, more of a sci-fi thriller, though it also has some scary moments in it. Starring Sasha Luss (Anna) and Alexis Ren (The Enforcer), Latency marks the feature debut of writer / director James Croke. This sci-fi thriller follows a professional gamer battling acute agoraphobia, tasked with testing new gaming equipment powered by A.I. - capable of reading her mind. As they experiment with this new tech, the line between reality and Hana's subconscious begins to blur and she starts to wonder if the device is helping her or serving a more sinister force. A.I. serving a more sinister force? Yes, it definitely is (that sinister force being greed). This looks a bit derivative,...

The experience was “uncomfortable” but the crew pulled it off with “taste.”

Asphalt City (Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire)
I entered Asphalt City at last year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival with nothing but morbid curiosity. Having engendered some rank responses from its Cannes premiere and not secured any known U.S. distributor, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s film had the right kind of bad-object energy one needs at the jetlagged start to their week in a small Polish city. (Or just the comfort I personally get from a Brooklyn-shot feature featuring two Club Random guests.) I walked away boasting complicated, fascinated enthusiasm: nearly every second is ridiculous and never boring, and it doesn’t not deserve to play at a cinematography festival––having the most cinematography counts for something. Whatever one may think of Luc Besson’s oeuvre, his films work best when they live up to their trashy potential. The director’s cinema is littered with all-out demented interludes and comic-book exaggerations. Think of Rihanna quoting Paul Verlaine’s poem “A Poor Young Shepherd” while gyrating on a stripper pole in his intergalactic romp Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets; or, more recently, Russian supermodel Sasha Luss mowing down throngs of thugs inside a restaurant in Anna. Besson’s always been particularly fluent in the art of the unreal, and Dogman, his latest, is engineered as one such tale: a pulpy story of an outcast who turns a whole pack of dogs into loyal allies in his fight against injustice. But the film never owns up to its deranged premise, and a staid, predetermined script sands off its most shamelessly ridiculous moments––the only moments when Dogman truly comes to life.

"She's crazy!" Paramount has revealed an official trailer for Sheroes, an action thriller comedy arriving in theaters and on VOD to watch this June. This is one of these pretend "female empowerment" movies that is actually written and directed by a man, who has never directed a movie before (only produced them), which does not bode well. When four thick-as-thieves friends arrive in Thailand for a hedonistic adventure, they quickly find themselves in over their heads when one of them gets kidnapped by a notorious drug lord. As they fight to stay alive and protect one another, they employ a unique set of skills in a heart-pumping battle for survival. The movie stars Sasha Luss, Wallis Day, and Isabelle Fuhrman as three main ladies, plus Jack Kesy, Joseph Angelo, and Skai Jackson. Plus an unnamed Thai cast. So they stole that line from Taken and they're not ashamed about it?...

Irish producer Paul Thompstone and Sorin Baluta have launched a new sales agency out of Ireland. The company, Studio Atlantic, launches in Cannes with a World War II feature set to shoot in Belgium this fall.
Having specialized in production finance, Thompstone has a large network of funders, including private equity, for high-concept feature films and television. One of the company’s first titles is Julian Kerknawi’s World War II feature “The Last Front,” which will star Sasha Luss (“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”) and begin shooting in September.
Situated on Ireland’s west coast, Studio Atlantic is encouraging overseas producers to get in touch if they are considering Ireland — which hosted high-profile shoots such as “Vikings” and “The Favourite” — as a potential location in upcoming productions.

Luc Besson returns to cinema screens with his first, and presumably last, film he will be afforded to make after the colossal financial failure of his predeceasing feature Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, that has plunged his production company into chaos and, has been levelled a string of sexual assault allegations against the famed director whose credits include Leon and The Fifth Element. Besson’s latest, on paper at least, is exactly what he needs to fight against in his dark corner of sexual aggression. Gaining back an audience’s trust while also generating a significant profit margin to secure a future for his production company. However with Anna, his latest, Besson fails on both fronts.

Luc Besson captured my attention with Léon the Professional in 1994 and since then, I’ve wanted to love everything he’s done, but the man is incredibly inconsistent so it’s as if every other film is worth a look. However, he hasn’t really scored since 2014’s Lucy. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was a pretty misfire and now we have Anna.
The film, out now on disc from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, is another in a long line of admirable female empowerment tales. Stars: Sasha Luss, Helen Mirren, Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy, Lera Abova, Alexander Petrov, Nikita Pavlenk, Anna Krippa, Aleksey Maslodudov, Eric Godon, Ivan Franek, Jean-Baptiste Puech, Adrian Can | Written and Directed by Luc Besson
