In the wake of two seasons and a just-released Halloween special, it appears that Max’s adult animated Scooby-Doo series “Velma” has been cancelled by the Warner Bros. streamer.
Background artist Davey Cummings shares on Instagram this week, “There will not be a Season 3, but I hope I get to work with these amazing talented people again one day.”
Max has yet to release an official statement. Stay tuned for more.
“Velma” is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang.
In this year’s second season of the Max animated series: “When an even spookier mystery grips Crystal Cove, Velma (Mindy Kaling) must find a way to balance her detective work with the demands of her newfound popularity before it’s too late. Eli Roth’s Borderlands film comes to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this November – more on the release here.
After something akin to a crash and burn at the box office in August, Lionsgate will be hoping for better return when Borderlands gets its physical media release. It was quickly made available on video on demand services, but the studio has – and good on it – committed to a full physical media release for the film as well.
Directed by Eli Roth, the film is an adaptation of the videogame series, and it attracted quite a cast too. Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis are all part of the ensemble. Our review of the film – and we were one of the few who got something out of it, it seems – can be found here.

Based on her creative output over the last few years, it's genuinely astonishing that actress Ariana Greenblatt isn't even old enough to legally order a drink yet. Born in August 2007 in New York City to an industry family, Greenblatt booked her first big role in 2016 thanks to the Disney Channel original series "Stuck in the Middle," which cast her as Daphne Diaz — the youngest of seven kids, who still loves playing with dolls but is also pretty vindictive for such a little kid.
After making her film debut in a small supporting role in "A Bad Moms Christmas" in 2017, Greenblatt's career really took off. So, what are her best projects so far? Bear in mind that Greenblatt is still early in her career, and based on her work thus far, her future is incredibly bright. Still, she's made some pretty solid stuff since 2017, including some absolutely enormous blockbusters. Here are her five best roles,...

With the momentum of stardom in her favor after Netflix’s Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega will surely take on more Hollywood projects following Season 2 of Wednesday, which is currently in production.
Before these two Tim Burton projects, Ortega had roles in several other Netflix films and a television show as well as separate feature films. She got her start in a Colgate toothpaste commercial and then a Disney Channel show that mirrored the aspect of her big family.
Some might recognize Ortega as the actress who portrayed the younger version of Jane Gloriana Villanueva (portrayed by Gina Rodriguez when she’s older) in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. She also appeared in Studio 666 a horror film in which the Foo Fighters move into a storied rock ‘n roll studio that starts to haunt their work. “Borderlands” is an action movie starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart. With Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt and Florian Munteanu. It is directed by Eli Roth.
When you have the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis leading the charge in a film, you’re assured a certain level of excellence in the production. At the very least, you can expect the movie to exude quality. “Borderlands” is an exuberant spectacle of high-caliber mischief, boasting impressive visual effects and a script that doesn’t overcomplicate itself. It’s a wild, unbridled, and utterly entertaining ride.
This comedy quickly abandons any pretense of serious storytelling within the first five minutes, opting instead to revel in its fresh, carefree, and anarchic style. Despite its chaotic nature, it carries that unmistakable Jack Black flair: a film that pushes boundaries just enough to be provocative while remaining suitable for all audiences,...

Borderlands is coming home... less than a month after it was released in theaters.
Lionsgate has announced that the star-studded but critically-panned video game adaptation will be available to purchase on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) and Premium Electronic Sell-Through (Est) from this Friday, August 30.
We didn't expect the movie to stay in theaters for too much longer after a disastrous stint at the box office (it grossed just over $24 million with an estimated $120 million budget), but its home release is happening quite a bit sooner than analysts had predicted.
There's always a slim chance the movie will find a new lease of life on Digital and Blu-ray, but between the dismal Bo returns and the similarly awful reviews, it's probably safe to assume that this franchise is well and truly dead in the water.

Lionsgate is bringing Eli Roth’s Borderlands to Premium Video on Demand later this month to lick its wounds after a dismal box office performance. Beginning August 30, you can purchase Borderlands via PVOD and Premium Electronic Sell-Through. The tale of the film’s journey to the silver screen and subsequent failure at the box office is legend, with journalists and fans baffled by the movie’s ability to misfire despite boasting 17.75 million guns.
I don’t know that anything could have saved Borderlands from its unfortunate fate. The humor of the video game franchise is obnoxious and dated at best, with characters barking in leet speak amidst a Warrior Road-like setting. While colorful characters populate the franchise, production for Borderlands became a hellish experience, with delays, rewrites, and a lack of real stakes making the project’s success an up-dune battle.

As of this writing, Eli Roth's new action-comedy "Borderlands," based on the popular video game series, has grossed just over $24 million at the box office. This is an abysmal number, given that the film cost an estimated $120 million to make. It's a little too early to call it one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, but it's certainly one of the biggest bombs of the year. Given that it was based on a beloved video game property, the failure of "Borderlands" was particularly visible to a mass audience, playing into a long held prejudice against game adaptations. There are only scant great films to have been based on video games, and "Borderlands" certainly isn't one of them.
"Borderlands" received terrible notices, boasting a mere 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 151 reviews. /Film's own Bill Bria praised the film's candy-colored visuals, and enjoyed watching cast members...

After a blip that allowed another film sell some tickets, “Deadpool & Wolverine” returned to the top of box office charts in its fifth weekend of release. Marvel’s superhero adventure towered over the (albeit anemic) competition as two newcomers, “The Crow” and “Blink Twice,” misfired in their debuts.
Director Zoe Kravitz’s twisted thriller “Blink Twice” led among new releases but faltered in fourth place with $7.3 million from 3,067 theaters. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s R-rated reboot of “The Crow,” starring Bill Skarsgård as a murdered musician who is resurrected to avenge the deaths of himself and his fiancee, bombed with $4.6 million from 2,752 theaters to open in eighth place. Critics were fonder of “Blink Twice” compared to “The Crow” — the former landed a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes while the latter was saddled with a 20% “rotten” score — while audiences were mixed, giving both films a “B-” grade on CinemaScore. Welcome to the dog days of summer.
This weekend at the box office will be sluggish as two new releases — director Zoe Kravitz’s twisted thriller “Blink Twice” and “The Crow” reboot starring Bill Skarsgård — target middling debuts. “Blink Twice” is aiming for $7 million to $8 million from 3,000 venues while “The Crow” looks to bring in $6 million to $9 million from 2,500 theaters.
Despite the pair of newcomers, last weekend’s champ “Alien: Romulus” will duel with “Deadpool & Wolverine” for the top spot on North American charts. The R-rated “Romulus” is projected to add $16 million to $19 million in its sophomore outing, declining 55% to 60% from its $41 million debut. Meanwhile, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is targeting a similar $16 million to $18 million range in its fifth weekend of release. Marvel’s superhero adventure is the second-biggest movie of the year with $546 million in North America and $1.14 billion worldwide.

Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie is exiting cinemas at some speed, as Lionsgate prepares a video on demand release within weeks.
Much has been made of the $100m asking price for the long-awaited movie adaptation of the videogame series Borderlands. The successful games though were finally turned into a film of some resources, with Eli Roth directing and co-writing the script.
Still, even though there were a few outliers, the critical consensus was that Eli Roth and his team hadn’t quite hit the mark here. Furthermore, the box office returns suggest that Lionsgate’s investment in the feature might take some time to recoup, and that the cinema days of Borderlands have come to a fairly abrupt end.

Much has been made of the $100m asking price for the long-awaited movie adaptation of the videogame series Borderlands. The successful games though were finally turned into a film of some resources, with Eli Roth directing and co-writing the script.

“Alien: Romulus” ripped into the domestic box office with $41.5 million, marking the second-highest start in the long-running “Alien” franchise. Those ticket sales were enough for the newest chapter in Disney and 20th Century’s sci-fi horror saga to end the three-week reign of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which just overtook “Joker” as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history with $1.14 billion.
These achievements are capping off Disney’s stellar summer streak, which ignited with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (May’s highest grossing movie with $397 million) and continued through “Inside Out 2” (June’s highest grossing movie with $1.597 billion) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (July’s highest grossing movie with $1.14 billion). The studio earlier this month became the first of 2024 to surpass $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales and should continue to pad that total with “Moana 2” (Nov. 27) and “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Dec. 20) on the calendar through the year’s end.

Cate Blanchett stands as one of the greatest actresses of her generation, if not ever. And she is undoubtedly one of the most committed working today. This is something that Jamie Lee Curtis saw firsthand while making Borderlands with Blanchett, observing that she was practicing her Lydia Tár technique in between takes.
As Curtis – whose Everything Everywhere All at Once co-star Michelle Yeoh beat out Cate Blanchett for Best Actress – remembered, she would see Blanchett practicing conducting while in full Lilith get-up, which only added to the confusion. “I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ She said, ‘Oh, I have this job I’m going to next.’ She went straight to Berlin from Budapest. That’s how long ago we made this movie,” referring to the movie beginning filming in April 2021, four months before cameras on the Todd Field film rolled.

Deadline reports that Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) is in talks to star as Anthony Bourdain in Tony, a biopic directed by Matt Johnson (BlackBerry). The outlet adds that A24 is in negotiations to acquire the project.
After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Anthony Bourdain worked in many kitchens in New York City, including as an executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles. His fame exploded with the publication of Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, a New York Times best-selling book that detailed the seedy underbelly of the restaurant world and his own rampant drug use. He hosted several popular shows that explored culture and cuisine around the world, including Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown on CNN. Sadly, he committed suicide in 2018.

The latest post-apocalyptic landscape sprawling wannabe sci-fi epic, Borderlands is not only both and extremely tedious and dull film, but it is also strikingly uninteresting and consequently sets a new low standard for director Eli Roth, whose previous output was nothing to brag about either.
Centered around a bounty hunter named Lilith (Cate Blanchett), the story follows her as she is given the assignment of locating the daughter of a powerful criminal named Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). This young lady – named Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt) – is currently on the run with Roland (Kevin Hart) and Krieg (Florian Munteanu), when Lilith catches up to her and, with the assistance of Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and wise-cracking robot Claptrap (Jack Black), becomes intertwined in a quest to unearth the greatest secrets in the universe (all of which appear to be stored somewhere inside a planet called Pandora.

This weekend’s biggest theatrical release was the novel-based romantic drama “It Ends with Us,” starring Blake Lively, taking on the seemingly unstoppable “Deadpool and Wolverine” juggernaut. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Lively’s movie did very well, better than some expected, “Deadpool and Wolverine” stayed on top for a third weekend in a row with $54.2 million, down just 44% to bring its domestic total to $494.3 million. Marvel Studios’ latest is just one or two days away from hitting the $500 million milestone, a benchmark achieved by a mere 21 movies — see the complete list.
The Ryan Reynolds–Hugh Jackman blockbuster grossed another $57.8 million internationally this weekend for an overseas total of $535.2 million, and sure enough, it crossed the $1 billion mark globally, remaining the second-biggest blockbuster of 2024. Another landmark of note is the $78 million the movie has made on global IMAX screens, divided at $41.3 million domestic and $36.7 million international.

Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine delivered $54.2m in its third weekend as the newly crowned $1bn global smash surged to $494.3m in North America, staying top ahead of a spectacular $50m debut for Sony’s romantic drama It Ends With Us.
It was a great weekend for the Ryan Reynolds-Blake Lively household that maintained an encouraging summer season and for the first time saw two films earn $50m or more in the same weekend in the traditionally slow month of August. Studios will confirm numbers on Monday.

Based on the action role-playing first-person video game of the same name, set in a space Western science fantasy setting, Borderlands is the newest addition to the heavily saturated video-game adaptation sub-genre. The movie is directed by Eli Roth, a filmmaker famous for his entries into the horror franchise, particularly those of an incredibly gory nature including Hostel and last year’s Thanksgiving. Starring Cate Blanchett (Tar), Kevin Hart (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) and Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Borderlands follows a ragtag team of misfits who embark on a mission to save a missing girl who holds the key to unimaginable power. Despite boasting a competent cast and colorful visuals, Borderlands is severely let down by poor dialogue, an uninteresting story and complete ignorance of the source material.
The success of a video game adaptation largely relies on one thing – how true it stays to the lore of the game.

Colleen Hoover’s literary sensation “It Ends With Us” is now a box office smash.
A film adaptation of her 2016 novel, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (who also directed), has collected a stellar $50 million from 3,611 venues in its opening weekend. It’s a huge win for the Sony Pictures movie, which cost $25 million to produce. “It Ends With Us” tells the story of Lily Bloom (Lively), a small business owner who gets caught in a love triangle between a charming but abusive neurosurgeon, Ryle (Baldoni) and her first love, Atlas (Brandon Sklenar). Critics were mixed but audiences have responded enthusiastically to the PG-13 romantic drama, which notched an “A-” on CinemaScore.
“This is a sensational opening for a dramatic romance film,” David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Pure romance is not a big performer at the box office, but occasionally the right story...

Gina Gershon nearly put her first onscreen love interest in the hospital.
The actress recently recalled filming her “first love scene ever” with Tom Cruise in their 1988 movie Cocktail, during which he was a total “gentleman,” despite the fact that she “kneed him right in the nose.”
“At one point, he starts off under the covers, and I told him I was very ticklish,” she explained this week on Watch What Happens Live. “I said, ‘No, no, don’t ever do that.’ And in one take — I think he wanted a reaction — and he grabbed my stomach, and I kneed him right in the nose. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I just broke Tom Cruise’s nose.’ He’s like, ‘No, no, you told me.’ I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry,’ he was like, ‘No, it was my fault.’ And he was so overprotective over me. He was great.

The August box office is looking Lively with Sony’s drama “It Ends With Us” scoring a spectacular opening day of $24 million from 3,611 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2016 bestselling novel is now looking at even higher projections north of $45 million across the three-day frame — a fantastic start for a drama with a mere $25 million production budget, well below the spend of the typical studio summer tentpole.
The popularity of Hoover’s novel on TikTok and marketing’s slant toward female audiences led many analysts to believe that “It Ends With Us” could come in well above earlier tracking. The film now seems primed for a second place opening through the weekend, coming in close to the third outing Marvel’s mega-hit “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Blake Lively’s spouse Ryan Reynolds. “It Ends With Us” was the top grosser on its opening day,...

Eli Roth’s long-awaited Borderlands movie has finally hit theaters, but unfortunately, it isn’t off to a great start. The project started production in 2021, and according to stunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee, they were told that Borderlands would shoot with the assumption that it would be R-rated.
“We were shooting an R-rated movie when we did it. We always knew that we were going to go either 15 or R rating, it’s 15 in UK, for a slightly mature audience,” O’Dee told ScreenRant. “So, we were blowing people’s heads off. And we were cutting feet off. We were doing all of that. But then, you know, a lot happens. We shot that nearly three years ago, or we just finished it. So, I guess a lot happens in post, and they see where it’s going to go and what market they’re aiming for. But literally the idea and the brief was carnage,...

Lionsgate and director Eli Roth's Borderlands video game adaptation arrives in theaters today on the heels of some of the worst reviews we've seen for a major studio release in quite some time.
As we know, negative reviews don't always have an impact on audience interest, but in this instance, it's probably safe to say that cinemagoers haven't exactly been convinced to give it a shot!
Despite a starry cast and a family-friendly PG-13 rating, the movie took in just $1.3 million from Thursday night previews, and is now tracking to earn between $10M-$18M at the domestic box office over the course of its opening weekend.
International numbers could wind up giving it a bit of a boost, but taking Borderlands' estimated $100M+ budget into account, and we're almost certainly looking at a massive flop here.
It's not all bad news, though, because Borderlands is no longer showing as 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands is an adaptation of the popular video game series developed by Gearbox Software. Essentially an action thriller about a rag-tag gang of space mercenaries, it tries hard to generate Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, but is let down by a lack of chemistry between the cast, largely flat direction and a series of uninspired fight scenes.

In a galaxy far, far away, a psychotic wasteland dweller is strapped to a pole with explosives. Thirteen-year-old Tiny Tina comes skipping along, singing “Pop Goes the Weasel” before detonating the explosives and causing bits of the psychotic wasteland dweller to litter the landscape. She then introduces our hero to “the fine-ass ladies”—two explosive-stuffed rabbits named Mushy Snugglebites and Felicia Sexopants—who can help them with a major heist.
As juvenile as that description is, I wish I could tell you that Eli Roth’s Borderlands starts by directly copying an iconic scene from the Borderlands 2 game that introduces the ever-chaotic and maniacally performed Tiny Tina in an act of cartoonish violence. At least that would show that, like the games in the series, the film had some semblance of a personality, even if it’s a 4chan anon’s idea of one. And that would at least be...

Sony/Wayfarer’s “It Ends With Us” is providing exactly the kind of secondary support movie theaters are hoping for, as it has earned $7 million at the Thursday box office largely from fans of Colleen Hoover’s romantic drama novel.
Starring Blake Lively alongside director Justin Baldoni, “It Ends With Us” is as female-driven as expected, with Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak reporting that 82% of the Thursday night audience were women. Hoover’s fans were not disappointed, as the film received a score of 4.5/5 from audiences.
Sporting a $25 million budget co-financed by Sony and Wayfarer, “It Ends With Us” will be an easy theatrical hit as it is set for a $40 million-plus opening weekend, a fine addition to the continued holdover grosses from the Marvel megahit “Deadpool & Wolverine” and Universal’s PG-13 blockbuster alternative “Twisters.”

Many video game fans will know that Borderlands is one of the most beloved action games of all time. Currently, there are four main games in the series, as well as some spin-offs and crossovers, but regardless of that, the series is undoubtedly one of the more popular ones.
In light of the recent successes of video game adaptations, a Borderlands movie was demanded by fans, and we now know that the movie is coming out today, but it seems that most fans will be disappointed, wishing that the movie – at least in this format – had never been made.
Namely, ahead of the US premiere of the Borderlands movie, which is happening today – on August 9, 2024 – the first critics’ reviews (for those who’ve seen the previews) are in and the critics have absolutely destroyed the movie, and it seems that the first audience reactions are also very disappointing.

It almost feels right that an Eli Roth movie based on Gearbox Software's Borderlands, a garish video game grind-a-thon that indulges nimrod irreverence and cartoon havoc, would disrupt the good vibes that video game adaptations have been bestowed of late. Roth's film, cobbled together from pixels, sheet metal,...

Going in, I had my doubts about Borderlands, the latest overblown video game adaptation created to entice PG-13 moviegoers.
First off, it has a near decade-long history of failed attempts to crack its code, including Craig Mazin, who now shares a co-writing credit using “Joe Crombie”.
If this is the case, after wild small-screen success with Chernobyl and The Last of Us, you could understand why he wouldn’t want to be associated with the final product. Then its original director and credited co-writer and story creator Eli Roth shot the film during the pandemic in 2021. But when two weeks of reshoots were required, he had to turn it over to someone else due to his commitment to completing last year’s hoot of a holiday horror movie Thanksgiving. Thus, Tim Miller (2016’s...

Lionsgate’s Borderlands hits theaters Aug. 9, but the review embargo for the film broke Thursday, and the early reaction from critics has been dire.
A live-action adaptation of Gearbox Software’s popular video game series, Eli Roth’s film takes place on the planet Pandora and tells the story of a band of outlaw misfits. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Jack Black providing the voice of a wisecracking robot.
As of Thursday evening, the review aggregator sites have damning scores for Borderlands. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s score clocked in at a lowly 6 percent from 45 reviews. Mercifully, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is markedly higher at 51 percent so far. On Metacritic, the critic score was 29 based on 23 reviews and things were no better on Letterboxd, where users gave Borderlands a score of 2.1/5.
Below are key excerpts from some of the most prominent early reviews.

This article contains major spoilers for "Borderlands."
The "Borderlands" series of video games are a unique breed: they can be thought of as action-oriented shooters, or they can be considered as character-based RPGs. Like so many "open-world" games of the last decade or so, they're structured in such a way that you could either spend your time curating a character and gallivanting across the wasteland of Pandora, or you could jump right into story-based missions and follow a scripted tale like the single-player games of old.
"Borderlands," the feature film adaptation, cannot possibly replicate the open-world aspects of the video game, so it must by default hone in on those story missions. As such, director and co-writer Eli Roth (with Joe Crombie officially co-credited on writing duties) attempts to distill the expansive universe of the "Borderlands" series into a coherent movie, and at least where coherence is concerned, does a pretty decent job.
