Born in 1924 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Anderson attended: J.P.McCaskey High School, Millersville State Teachers College, and New York University, where she got a degree in psychology. An early job babysitting for New York City based independent and documentary filmmaker Richard Leacock gave her the connection she needed to move into the world of television and cinema. She is credited as the first American born black woman to produce and direct a TV documentary, the first to direct and produce a syndicated Tv series, the first black woman to join the film editors union, and the first black employee of either gender at New York City's public TV channel WNET. Another achievement is her helping to found the first black owned public Tv channel, WHUT at Howard University in Washington DC.Among the honors she has received is the POV award from the San Francisco International Film Festival in April of 2019.
