A sizable chunk of my formative years were spent watching late night Discovery Channel, so I think it makes sense that I used to be unreasonably terrified of being abducted by aliens. After all, growing up in the presence of (faked) alien autopsies and sensationalist coverage of the Betty and Barney Hill incident is bound to have a few long-term ramifications. However, this irrational fear of extraterrestrials also resulted in a paradoxical fascination with all things UFO-related – especially when it came to videogames.
If it featured a Grey Alien on the box-art, you better believe that I played it and later suffered the consequences (usually in the form of vivid nightmares). Of course, not all alien visits are created equal, and some of these video game moments were more terrifying (and unexpected) than others. And with the Greyhill Incident announcement trailer reminding gamers that they should look up to the skies in dread,...

Here at /Film, we're obviously obsessed with movies and TV. But sometimes it's nice to crack open a good book. Of course, since our brains are always thinking about cinema and television, that means we love books that allow us to dig deeper into the big screen and the increasingly large flickering box that isn't much of a small screen anymore. That's why, after Part 1 and Part 2 of the 2022 /Film Holiday Gift Guide highlighted a bunch of movies and TV shows on physical media, Part 3 is focused on a truckload of books for the pop culture nerd in your life.
We've assembled a huge list of books here, including memoirs from your favorite actors like Alan Rickman, Steve Martin, Geena Davis, Bob Odenkirk, Viola Davis, and the late Michael K. Williams. There are plenty of in-depth, behind-the-scenes chronicles of classics such as "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" and new blockbusters like "Avatar: The Way of Water.

Our latest roundup of recommended reads related to film and pop culture is full of wonderfully outsized personalities like Nicolas Cage, Michael Cimino, and Dennis Hopper; brilliant filmmakers like Sofia Coppola and Sarah Polley; and entertaining figures both real and fictional (James Bond).
Let’s start with Cage, who has more than earned a lengthy career overview.
Age of Cage: Four Decades of Hollywood Through One Singular Career by Keith Phipps (Henry Holt & Co.)
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Nicolas Cage brought up Keith Phipps’ Age of Cage, commenting that the author “said some pretty articulate, intelligent things about the transformations the filmmaking industry has gone through in the 40 years” Cage has been working. It is very Nicolas Cage for the actor to not only be aware of Phipps’ stupendous book, but to bring it up himself, unsolicited, in an interview. Indeed, Age of Cage is as astute, entertaining,...

"Show me who you are." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a second official trailer for a crime thriller titled Ecco, or Ecco, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Ben Medina. We posted another trailer for this back in 2019, but it's just now getting a VOD release hence a new trailer. Ecco is about a former assassin named Michael, living a new life in the shadows with his family, who emerges from hiding to discover the origin of his lethal beginnings. To protect his family and to pursue his only chance at redemption, he must hunt those running the organization that once used to control him. Lathrop Walker stars, with Tabitha Bastien, Helena Grace Donald, Mahria Zook, S. Joe Downing, Mark Sehlbach, plus Michael Winters. This doesn't look as bad as so many other action films recently - might actually be worth a watch. Here's the second official trailer for Ben Medina's film Ecco,...

In just a few hours, the five-year journey that’s been Gotham will have finally come to an end. With the “No Man’s Land” story arc now being behind us, the series will jump forward by ten years in order to show the Batman that its version of Bruce Wayne ultimately becomes. Not only that, but we’ll also see more fully developed iterations of the Riddler, Penguin and Joker.
Speaking of the Joker, we’ve been given one tease after another when it comes to him, be it via official or unofficial channels. But who we’ve seen remarkably less of is that of Jeremiah Valeska’s main squeeze, Ecco. For all intents and purposes, she’s this series’ take on Harley Quinn because that character is off limits for some stupid reason. In my view, not allowing a Batman series of any sort access to Joker and...

The bird has been sprung from his cage, and just in time to see how it all ends.
In TheWrap’s exclusive clip from Thursday’s series finale of “Gotham,” Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) has been released from prison and is walking out of his jail cell to a slew of Gotham’s press, dressed in all the penguin-suit glory fans of Fox’s Batman prequel series have been waiting for.
When he’s asked by a journalist about the first thing he’ll do now that he’s a free man, he responds: “I will lay flowers on the grave of my beloved mother.”
However, when the topic of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) — and how Gordon put him in prison — comes up, Cobblepot says this: “The best revenge against Jim Gordon will be a life spent serving the city I love.”

Before you know it, Gotham will be return with its final two episodes and we’ll be able to chat about everything that went down in what’s sure to be must-see TV. After having to deal with one more rerun in the form of “Ruin” on April 11th, “They Did What?” will see Bane unleash hell and cap off the present-day story arc on April 18th.
But on April 25th, things will really kick into high gear when the series finale itself graces screens and presents this universe’s iteration of Batman. Appropriately titled “The Beginning…,” the official synopsis sets the stage for what’s to come:

“Gotham” dropped a new trailer for the Fox drama’s Feb. 21 episode on Friday, revealing that (spoiler alert?) Cameron Monaghan’s Jeremiah Valeska is for sure The Joker. Yes, you’re shocked, we know.
Here’s the official description for next Thursday’s installment in the final season of the Batman prequel series, titled “Ace Chemicals,” which will feature Jeremiah’s “birth” into the famous villain who definitely no one already suspected he was:
Gordon races to uncover the criminal element threatening to end talks of Gotham’s reunification with the mainland. A very-much-alive Jeremiah (guest star Cameron Monaghan) returns and organizes a twisted recreation of the murder of Bruce’s parents, with the help of Jervis Tetch aka Mad Hatter (guest star Benedict Samuel) in the all-new “Ace Chemicals” episode of Gotham airing Thursday, Feb. 21 (8:00-9:00 Pm Et/Pt) on Fox.

On the one hand, I’ve been rather entertained by what Gotham‘s fifth and final season has offered thus far. But on the other, I’ve been waiting with bated breath to see all of the cool stuff teased in various trailers. I guess that’s to be expected when shooting wraps before the first episode has a chance to premiere.
One such thing I’ve been geeked for is that of the confrontation between Bruce Wayne and Jeremiah Valeska in the appropriately titled “Ace Chemicals.” In that episode, we can expect to see their feud build to a crescendo – and to possibly serve as the pivotal moment marking Jeremiah’s transformative experience.
But, until the big moment arrives, we can rely on this freshly released gallery of images to tide us over. As you begin to browse, notice how both the Mad Hatter and Ecco are there to...

Gotham begins to get a little lost in all its layers in "Pena Dura."
This Gotham review contains spoilers.
Gotham Season 5 Episode 5
Layers upon layers. Gotham continues to be a mass of concurrent storylines. This week, many of those arcs come together, and at times, the results are a blast. At others, the whole thing almost collapses in on itself. So let’s start peeling back the layers of Gotham’s onion as we barrel toward the series finale.
One of the promises Gotham made that it hasn’t really fulfilled is a deeper dive into Jim Gordon’s military past. Gordon as a vet is so intriguing and also sadly, pretty quickly forgotten about. Until this week, as we are introduced to a former army buddy of Jim’s named Eduardo Dorrance, played by Shane West.
We all know that West has been teased to be somehow connected to a major Bat baddie.

There doesn't seem to be any hope left for Gotham.
After a bomb ripped through Jim Gordon's Haven on Gotham Season 5 Episode 3, good citizens seem to be lacking, too.
It was a shocking turn of events after what seemed like a major victory for Gordon and the rest of the good guys after they secured a place people could call home until Gotham got back under control.
The Haven was a place where everyone sought refuge. It was a place of hope, but now all that is destroyed.
It has to be frustrating for Jim. His life is a series of one step forward and a million steps back.
He also continues to ride the line between a good cop and a cop willing to compromise his morals if it benefits him the long run.
Once again, Jim teamed up with Penguin to get himself out of a tough situation.

Riveting as Gotham‘s season premiere proved to be, it’s quite possible that I’m even more excited for this week’s episode. The reason I say that is because it’s set to feature the return of Jeremiah Valeska, the man who could very well wind up becoming this universe’s version of the Joker.
Strangely enough, he’s not shown in any of the photos promoting “Penguin, Our Hero,” but the official synopsis does guarantee the presence of actor Cameron Monaghan. Regardless, his involvement is teased by various other images included in the gallery, which I’ll elaborate on right now.
As you browse the slideshow below, you’ll come across a lone picture of Ecco, the not-Harley Quinn to Jeremiah’s not-Joker. So far, we’ve seen her breaking into Gcpd and leaving behind some graffiti hinting at her man’s omnipresence. This time, though, the...

Gotham star Cameron Monaghan decided to treat instead of trick his fans this Halloween as he took to Instagram to share some new photos from the upcoming season 5 which gave us a fresh look at his character Jeremiah Valeska. And, as we’ve heard before, he’s now got himself a girlfriend in the form of Francesca Root-Dodson’s Ecco, who looks like she’s going to become the proto-Harley Quinn to Jeremiah’s juvenile Joker.
Monaghan’s images depict the happy couple dancing together in some kind of abandoned creepy stock room. Dressed in matching striped outfits and with Jeremiah’s wide-brimmed hat and Ecco’s unique hairstyle, there’s definitely a Clown Prince and Princess of Crime vibe going on here. The actor captioned his post: “For some people, every day is Halloween.”
