Exclusive: Oscar nominee Catherine Keener has landed a major role opposite Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel Joker: Folie à Deux for Warner Bros. and DC Films. Deadline recently broke the news that Brendan Gleeson would be joining the ensemble as well as Zazie Beetz.
Warner Bros also recently announced that the film would bow on October 4, 2024. Production is expected to get underway this December.
Warner Bros had no comment on Keener’s casting.
Phillips is returning to direct and also co-wrote the script with Scott Silver, who penned the original pic. Not much is known about the sequel, though insiders believe it will have musical elements and will be set in Arkham Asylum, which is where the first film leaves off after Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) has been sent there. It is also unknown who Keener will be playing.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” including the ending.]
There are times when “Brand New Cherry Flavor” seems to exist in its own universe. The Netflix series, based on Todd Grimson’s book of the same name, takes place in an early-’90s Los Angeles, bathed in equal layers of possibility and dread.
Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) arrives in this thick rainbow soup of a city with only one valuable item in tow: a short film called “Lucy’s Eye” that transfixes anyone who watches it. Director Matt Sobel, who was behind the camera for the show’s fourth and fifth episodes, directed the film-within-a-film. It’s an ideal example of how “Brand New Cherry Flavor” takes a hazy, fictional version of LA filled with inexplicable oddities and delivers something tangible.
“It’s got this raw energy, right? It’s not supposed to be this perfect masterpiece,” said series co-creator and co-showrunner Nick Antosca. “It’s supposed to show...

Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion had hard rules for Brand New Cherry Flavor. The co-creators of the new Netflix show, who previously worked together on the late, great Channel Zero, knew what would and wouldn’t fly in their adaptation of Todd Grimson‘s novel. Nonetheless, Antosca and Zion won’t reveal what those exact rules were for their nightmarish Netflix limited […]

This article contains spoilers for Brand New Cherry Flavor.
Brand New Cherry Flavor is an intense, at times bizarre experience. The Netflix horror series based on the Todd Grimson book of the same name intends to capture a dream-like witchiness in early ‘90s L.A. To that end, it’s hard to argue that the endeavor is not successful.
The show, run by Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion (Channel Zero), is so dreamlike, however, that sometimes it can be difficult to determine just what is going on. Throughout the first season, we see indie filmmaker Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) dip her toe into some dark magic, but who’s to say she wasn’t experienced in the subject all along?
It’s all compounded by the fact that Brand New Cherry Flavor’s ending doesn’t conclude as definitively as one might expect. The door is clearly open for a second season.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” streaming now on Netflix.
Netflix’s new limited series “Brand New Cherry Flavor” promised twists, turns and kittens right from the start, but it’s hard to imagine anyone could have guessed exactly how those felines would come into play.
It seemed innocuous enough at first, with a mysterious woman going by the name of Boro (Catherine Keener) cradling a cat at a Hollywood event. There are enough eccentrics in Tinseltown that characters barely batted an eye. But after budding filmmaker Lisa (Rosa Salazar) took Boro up on her offer to put a curse on a producer (Eric Lange) who misled her and put her in a #MeToo situation, it was revealed those cats were Boro’s payments. And they were coming from inside those with whom she struck deals.

A few days after enlisting enigmatic witch Boro (Catherine Keener) to put a curse on a director who’s wronged her, young filmmaker Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) is sick of throwing up slimy, mewling kittens as a consequence. “No!” she practically growls, staring Boro down. “No more throwing up kittens!”
Boro shrugs, less than bothered. “Fine, no more throwing up kittens,” she says as she steps back into the shadows, disappearing into the lush jungle that’s overtaken her Los Angeles home. Lisa’s temporarily mollified — until she experiences the bodily result of that request, which is, to say the least, far worse than any of her previous retching. Resigned, she sighs. “Tell her I’ll go back to puking,” Lisa says to Boro’s stupefied lackey (Mark Acheson), who can only grunt in response as he shuffles away.

Most of the kittens in new Netflix horror series Brand New Cherry Flavor are puppets. Sometimes, however, you need the real thing…like for a scene in which a gang of gatos devour a dead coyote.
“We love cats. So that was a fun day,” series co-creator Nick Antosca tells Den of Geek. “The cats are professional actors. So they do exactly what you tell them and they never mess up a take. That’s a joke.”
Why open a story about a horror series with an anecdote about kittens, you might ask? Because, as the coyote-eating portion of that anecdote might indicate, Brand New Cherry Flavor isn’t your typical kind of horror tale. Based on a novel of the same name from Todd Grimson, the show is set in early ‘90s Hollywood and follows a talented indie filmmaker Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) as she does whatever it takes...

Netflix’s horror opus is a lucid love letter to revenge that thrives on nightmare logic, unhinged performances, and Hollywood’s fake veneer. “Curses aren’t real.” There’s a line of dialogue early on in Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion’s Brand New Cherry Flavor where a character innocently remarks, “You know those nights where every twenty minutes you […]...

"The backstory is in like 2007 or 2008. I read the novel because I had become like email pen pals with Ty Grimson, and I've never met him in real life," Antosca shared.
"We talked by email and phone, and I didn't even know that he was a novelist. I just knew he had some short stories online. He sent me the book. I was blown away by it. I became really fascinated by this kind of complex amoral yet relatable protagonists with this really intense creative drive," he added.

Few things are more frustrating to watch than a show that is all style and very little substance. But the themes of Netflix’s new Gothic horror series, “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” are so resonant and timely that it wouldn’t be entirely fair to accuse it of that offense even though it makes no good use of them. Instead, the show overcompensates by using horror staples like the undead, a witch’s curse and a classic rock soundtrack to cover up what it lacks — a point.
And yet the premise is so promising! Creators Lenore Zion and Nick Antosca present a dark fiction piece set in early-’90s Los Angeles that hinges on the terrible treatment of female filmmakers whose work is often ignored or even co-opted by greedy, old white men with more clout. This still happens, with myriad think pieces interrogating the problem, and particularly to young...

“Brand New Cherry Flavor” takes place roughly 30 years ago. If the murderer’s row of college radio deep cuts didn’t eventually tip you off, the on-screen setup puts the new Netflix show somewhere in the “early ’90s.” What transpires after that simple introduction is a meticulous, slow-motion fever dream, one that transpires with the occasional help of pay phones, VHS tapes, and print headlines.
The new limited series has plenty more on its mind than aping a particular time and place. “Brand New Cherry Flavor” carries all the psychological trappings that come with the curdled glamor of Los Angeles, but this is a specific kind of Hollywood story; one that exists in its own self-contained universe, detached from a conventional decade-signaling aesthetic. Very quickly, the show establishes its primary concern isn’t enduring stardom or lavish luxury. It’s a supernatural revenge tale brought on by what’s ostensibly a simple legal dispute.

Brand New Cherry Flavor looks like one of the wildest shows of the year -- and that's a good thing.
Netflix on Friday dropped the full-length trailer.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around what went down because of how out there it was, but it looks exciting.
"Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) comes to LA dead set on directing her first movie," reads the logline.
"But when she trusts the wrong person and gets stabbed in the back, everything goes sideways, and a dream project turns into a nightmare," it continues.
"This particular nightmare has zombies, hit men, supernatural kittens, and a mysterious tattoo artist who likes to put curses on people."
"And Lisa’s going to have to figure out some secrets from her own past in order to get out alive."
Sounds like a nightmare, right?

Premiering — a bit fittingly — on Friday the 13th (of August), the horror thriller stars Rosa Salazar (Undone, Parenthood) as Lisa Nova, a filmmaker who heads to Hollywood in the early ‘90s to make a movie, only to clearly be let down by her producer (played by Perry Mason‘s Eric Lange). After that, Lisa “tumbles down a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge — and kittens,” the official synopsis reads.

Rosa Salazar is navigating through Hollywood’s seedy underbelly in the first look teaser trailer (above) for the Netflix limited series Brand New Cherry Flavor and things are looking grim.
The Peruvian and French Canadian action star portrays Lisa Nova, an aspiring film director in the sun-drenched but seamy world of 1990s Los Angeles who embarks on a mind-altering journey — from the streets of Beverly Hills to the forests of Brazil — of supernatural revenge. Lisa is an Alice in Wonderland of sorts except the rabbit hole leads her down a hallucinatory path of sex, magic, revenge— and kittens.
Netflix will release the 8 episode series (60 minutes each), written and executive produced by Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion, on Friday, August 13.
Series costars include Oscar nominee Catherine Keener, The Good Place‘s Manny Jacinto, Eric Lange, and Marvel’s Agents of Shield’s Jeff Ward.

Although he’s expanded his scope with bigger and bigger budgets, for my money, Denis Villeneuve’s finest work is still Enemy, the enigmatic psychological thriller that launched his creative relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal that would be followed by Prisoners. Now, their next collaboration has been solidified on a long-gestating project.
After they became attached to a feature film adaptation of Jo Nesbø’s hit novel The Son a few years back, the project is now moving forward as an HBO limited series with Villeneuve as director and Gyllenhaal set to star, Deadline reports. Billions producer Lenore Zion will be the showrunner, while Jonathan Nolan is on board as executive producer.

Nick Antosca, who co-created Hulu’s “The Act,” is delving into another crazy real-life story.
The “Channel Zero” producer is teaming up with Ucp to develop a limited series about Jan Broberg and her multiple kidnappings. Ucp, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, nabbed the rights to Broberg’s stranger-than-fiction story series in what sources describe as a competitive bidding situation.
Broberg’s story was the subject of a Netflix documentary called “Abducted in Plain Sight.” Both Broberg and her mother Mary Ann are on board with this new project as producers.
The untitled Broberg series will follow the bizarre true story of how Jan was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by a charismatic, obsessed family “friend.” The Brobergs — devoted to their faith, family, and community — were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them.

Netflix has given a series order to “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” an eight-episode horror-thriller with Rosa Salazar tapped as the lead, a Netflix representative told TheWrap.
Eric Lange (“Escape at Dannemora”), Catherine Keener (“Kidding”), Manny Jacinto (“The Good Place”) and Jeff Ward (Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) have also been cast in the series, based on the horror novel by Todd Grimson, published in 2011 by Schaffner Press.
Netflix describes “Brand New Cherry Flavor” as telling the story of Lisa Nova (Salazar), an aspiring film director in the sun-drenched but seamy world of 1990 Los Angeles who embarks on a mind-altering journey — from the streets of Beverly Hills to the forests of Brazil — of supernatural revenge.

Taylor Mason and the writers pull another fast one with Billions Season 4 Episode 8, "Fight Night."
This Billions review contains spoilers.
Billions Season 4 Episode 8
In last week’s “Infinite Game,” the gestating plans of Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff) reached the final, simmering stage of their poisonous brewing when, armed with the knowledge of Taylor Mason’s (Asia Kate Dillon) attempts to rekindle their relationship with their estranged father Douglas (Kevin Pollak), Axe Capital threw the mother of all monkey wrenches into the reunited family’s big plans. The result? Government bureaucracy and late stage capitalism at their finest. The Masons are no longer on speaking terms and Bobby Axelrod’s (Damian Lewis) can now flourish unimpeded.
Unfortunately, not everything is as peachy as the episode’s concluding pizzeria dining experience would have you believe. Things are becoming increasingly worse for Wendy and her husband Chuck (Paul Giamatti). Their marriage is on...
