Sofia Kenin will return to action at the Hobart International on January 8 as the American player aims to bounce back quickly from a disappointing start to 2024.
Kenin had high hopes for progression at her first tournament entry of 2024 at the Brisbane International. However, things did not go as planned for the 25-year-old after she was beaten in the second round by Arina Rodionova in a straight sets defeat).
The loss came as a shock for the American player, especially after she ended 2023 with some impressive form. In the latter stages of last year's campaign, Kenin beat Caroline Garcia and also defeated world number two Aryna Sabalenka during the exhibition event, the World Tennis League.
Kenin's strong late-season form in 2023 also helped her to climb up to 33rd in the official Wta rankings, despite going as low as 280th in the standings at one stage.

Women's tennis could experience a major shakeup in rankings next season, with plenty of interesting names expected to make their mark.
Teenagers have not been left out of contending for the biggest Wta titles in the past few seasons. In four of the past five years, at least one teenager has won a Grand Slam, and there is a good chance that trend will continue next season.
But Grand Slams are not the only metric to determine a player's breakthrough. A Top 10 or even Top 20 win that serves as a catalyst to a productive season is well worthy of being classified in that category.
In this article, we shall list five of the likeliest teenagers who could enjoy a breakthrough year on the women's tour, culminating with a new career-high ranking and potentially even making quite the splash at Grand Slam level.
5. Brenda Fruhvirtova (16 years old)

Aryna Sabalenka was named the women's Itf World Champion for the 2023 season, but some fans were surprised that it wasn't world no. 1 on the Wta Tour, Iga Swiatek.
The 25-year-old had the best season of her career, and she was recognized for her efforts. However, the question is obvious, why was Sabalenka named the women's Itf World Champion if she didn't finish the year as world no. 1?
The first important fact to mention is that the year-end world no. 1 does not receive the Itf World Champion award every time. In the world of tennis, the Women's Tennis Association (Wta), or Association of Tennis Professionals (Atp), takes care of the tournaments from the 1000 to 250 category.
However, it's another governing body, the International Tennis Federation (Itf), that takes care of the Grand Slam tournaments, meaning those are important when it comes to their awards, and that was a factor this year.

Garbine Muguruza is currently on an indefinite break from tennis, and compatriot Paula Badosa has spoken highly of the two-time Grand Slam champion.
In an interview with Spanish outlet El Pais, Badosa discussed extensively on a wide range of topics, including tournament scheduling, her relationship with Atp star Stefanos Tsitsipas, and the current squabble between the Wta and the players.
Badosa also talked about former World No. 1 Garbine Muguruza in high regard. According to her, Muguruza has been a "reference" as someone she's always looked up to and worked to model her game to that of her compatriot.
Muguruza won two Grand Slams (French Open and Wimbledon) in addition to other prestigious Wta trophies like the Wta Finals. Badosa placed the 30-year-old in the same bracket as some gaudy names in Spanish women's tennis like Conchita Martinez and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

Maria Sakkari was torn between empathy and excitement in the wake of Karolina Muchova's withdrawal from the 2023 Wta Finals.
The Greek was the first alternate to replace any player who would pull out from the season finale, having finished ninth in the Wta Race, behind Muchova. The 27-year-old Muchova along with fellow Czech Marketa Vondrousova were all set to make their debuts at the event.
But Vondrousova will be the one heading there alone after her countrywoman withdrew due to a persistent wrist injury . On Tuesday, Muchova shared the disappointing news, that despite taking extra precautionary measures with doctors, the injury did not heal in time.
Since her last appearance at the US Open (where she fell to a straight sets defeat to eventual champion Coco Gauff in the semifinal), Muchova spent nearly two months on the sidelines. She sacrificed the entire Asian swing in order to recuperate. But...

Wta 's inactive star Garbine Muguruza received an award during a prize-giving ceremony called Women In Sport in her native Spain.
The Women In Sport Awards usually recognizes the work and dedication of sportswomen in Spain and the promoters who use their platforms to create awareness of the role of women in sports. It is held annually converging a pool of talent from many sports.
Muguruza arrived at the third edition of the Women In Sport Awards in Barcelona in a sparkling halter-neck red gown during the night ceremony. She shared a photo dump on her Instagram of her appearance at the ceremony, which also included a sharp picture with her trophy.
Muguruza, who celebrated her 30th birthday less than two weeks ago, was honored with the "Sports Talent Award" on a night when Barcelona women's footballer Aitana Bonmati, boxer Joana Pastrana, and snowboarder Queralt Castellet also received their share of the spoils.

Garbine Muguruza admitted in a recent interview that she has no intention of returning to tennis any time soon.
Muguruza has been on a break from tennis since earlier this year. It wasn't a huge surprise when she announced it because she seemed to be over it for a very long time before announcing the break.
Losing a couple of matches at the start of the 2023 Wta season finally pushed her to the edge, and she opted to leave the Tour for an undisclosed period, which seems to be extending.
We didn't hear much from her since then, but here and there, she said some things that gave fans some hope. One of those things was that she isn't saying goodbye to tennis for eternity , which is good news, but this most recent interview might slightly disappoint fans.

Garbine Muguruza is currently on a hiatus from tennis, and judging by her comments, she's not going to come back any time soon.
Muguruza only played a couple of matches this year, opting for a long hiatus after a couple of really disappointing losses at the start of the year.
She's been frustrated by tennis for over a year now and clearly needed a break from the whole Tour, especially with how fondly she spoke about her time away from tennis.
We haven't heard much from her since she went on a hiatus, but she got engaged and spoke about that in a recent interview. Now, talking to the Women's Health Magazine , Muguruza admitted that she's not even thinking about tennis, let alone a comeback to the sport, as she still enjoys her time away from it.

Garbine Muguruza opted to take a break from tennis earlier this year, and she's not yet considering making a comeback.
Muguruza was quite open about her reasons for taking a break, and it was mostly due to fatigue. She had a terrible 2022 season and started 2023 with more disappointments, eventually just growing sick of it. She's not the only player who opted for a break, as we saw Bianca Andreescu and Amanda Anisimova do it, too.
Life away from the courts has been good for Muguruza as she was quite enjoying not having to deal with the stressful nature of being a tennis player. She enjoyed time at home, recovered well, visited places, and even got engaged .
There doesn't seem to be any desire to return to tennis and compete on the Wta Tour right now, even though she always admitted that she was not retired and would make a comeback...

Coco Gauff has spoken favourably about Amanda Anisimova 's decision to prioritise her mental health ahead of tennis.
The American player has long been touted as the next best tennis player on the Wta Tour, but the tremendous pressure got to her more than once. Earlier this year, Anisimova announced a break from tennis and recently provided an update explaining that she's enjoying time away from the sport.
Obviously, Anisimova does miss the sport , but like her fellow colleague Garbine Muguruza, she found happiness away from the sport as well. Fellow American Coco Gauff was asked ahead of the 2023 US Open about her colleague's decision to step away, and she supports it.
Yeah, I would say when she announced the initial break, I was surprised. I don't think anybody was expecting it or anything. But I can understand really. There is probably a lot of players who need to take...

In only one year, four of ten players that were ranked in the Top 10 on the Wta Tour are nowhere near, with one of them retired and the rest on a hiatus.
From last year's US Open , half of the Top 10 have stayed there. Only Poland's Iga Swiatek and Tunisia's Ons Jabeur have maintained the same position of first and fifth, respectively. Swiatek and Jabeur contested last year's showpiece final in New York , and it will be interesting to see if history could repeat itself.
Aryna Sabalenka, who was ranked sixth in last year's tournament, enters this year's event ranked in second spot and with more than twice the ranking points. Greece's Maria Sakkari drops down to eighth this time, a far cry from her career-high mark of third from 2022, while Jessica Pegula has shelved four spots to third place.
But the major subplot here is the list of absentees.

Amanda Anisimova stepped away from tennis earlier this year due to burnout, and she's making moves towards shining a light on mental health.
Stepping away from the game to focus on one's mental health wasn't done by Anisimova first. We saw a few players like Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu do that on the Wta Tour. It's not just specific to the younger generation of players, as Garbine Muguruza did it earlier this year .
Amanda Anisimova opted to pause her tennis career , citing burnout, and it's been something she's enjoyed despite missing the sport. Anisimova launched a website to highlight further the need to protect your mental health.
The website will serve as a platform to sell her original paintings because she's been dedicating time to that hobby while away from the sport. The launch of the website contained some words from Anisimova on the endeavour.

Anett Kontaveit didn't bow out of tennis in round one of Wimbledon but rather round two against Marie Bouzkova who was just too strong to overcome.
Ending your career at 27 rarely happens willingly and in the case of Anett Kontaveit, it certainly didn't. The Estonian player is only about two years removed from some of her best tennis ever as she was ranked number two following a superb run late in the season.
She won multiple trophies that year and booked a spot at the Wta Finals where she played well and reached the semi-final. In an interesting coincidence, Kontaveit faced Garbine Muguruza, a player who is also away from tennis right now, with the Spaniard winning the match and the trophy.
She's been in the sport for years after turning professional in 2010 posting some solid and consistent results. Since then Kontaveit won six trophies, five of which came in the last two years.

Garbine Muguruza is away from tennis after announcing a break from the sport earlier this year and she likely won't be coming back to the Wta Tour this year.
The Spaniard has been struggling with her tennis for a very long time being unable to find her best tennis. She struggled for much of 2022 with this year continuing the struggles prompting to her to simply walk away from the sport .
It was not a retirement but rather a break with no date of return known. She announced her engagement in the meantime , admitting that life has been very good to her even if she's not playing tennis. Being able to step away from the sport was quite nice for her because most of her life has been dedicated to the sport.
Recently, the 29-year-old was back in Spain at the Chamartín Tennis Club where she received the Gold Medal for Sports Merit.

Garbine Muguruza has been away from tennis for a while but she's spent some quality time with family dropping the news in an interview.

The dynamic Spanish duo of Garbine Muguruza and Conchita Martinez have announced the end of their partnership.

Dubai, Feb 26 (Ians) Barbora Krejcikova took home the first Wta 1000 title of her career after pulling off a 6-4, 6-2 upset of World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the Dubai Tennis Championships women’s singles final, here on Saturday.

She was followed into the second week by Sabalenka, who maintained her undefeated run of 2023 by easing past her former doubles partner, No.26 seed Elise Mertens, 6-2, 6-3.

Melbourne, Jan 21 (Ians) Switzerland’s 12th seed Belinda Bencic on Saturday stormed into the women’s singles fourth round at the Australian Open with a hard-fought 6-2 7-5 victory over Camila Giorgi of Italy.
The two players have not met since 2019 but Bencic, the Tokyo Olympic Games gold medallist, enjoyed a 3-2 head-to-head advantage going into their sixth clash. She is also on an unbeaten run in January, having begun the 2023 season with a bang, defeating players like Garbine Muguruza, Caroline Garcia and Daria Kasatkina en route to the Adelaide International title.
But Giorgi has a reputation for slaying seeds and that set the scene for an intriguing clash in the Round of 32 at Melbourne Park on Saturday.
However, Bencic held the upper hand in the first set and broke Giorgi’s serve in the third and seventh games to pocket the set 6-2. In the second set, the two...

Fort Worth (Texas), Nov 7 (Ians) The No.7 seed Aryna Sabalenka stunned World No.1 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in their 2-hour and 7-minute semifinal here on Sunday.
Sabalenka prevailed in her tour-leading 28th three-set match of this season to reach her third final of the year.
At the start of the week, Sabalenka called it a “miracle” that she even qualified for the Wta Finals. But now, after a massive semifinal upset, her miracle has extended all the way into the singles final in Fort Worth.
Sabalenka will now meet No.6 seed, Caroline Garcia, for the Wta Finals singles trophy, which will break their currently deadlocked 2-2 head-to-head. With their semifinal wins, both Sabalenka and Garcia will finish the year inside the Top 5.

Forth Worth (Texas) Ons Jabeur came back to defeat Jessica Pegula 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a thrilling match at the Wta Finals here on Thursday.
Jabeur came back to defeat Pegula and this victory will likely have larger ramifications for the Tunisian. Previously, she had dropped seven of the past eight matches against Top 10 players. This was the kind of victory she can use toward maintaining her place among the elite in women’s tennis.
All four of the singles winners over the first two days happened to be the four players who had previously played in the year-end championship. A coincidence? Perhaps not.
Based solely on seeding, three of the four matches were upsets, as first-timers No.2 Ons Jabeur, No.3 Jessica Pegula and No.4 Coco Gauff were defeated, respectively, by Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari and Caroline Garcia.

Tokyo, Sep 25 (Ians) Russian tennis player Liudmila Samsonova edged Chinese teen Zheng Qinwen 7-5, 7-5 in the Toray Pan Pacific Open final on Sunday to clinch her third title of the year.
This was the world No. 30 Samsonova’s 18th victory in her last 19 matches. The 23-year-old has now won three tournaments over that span, having picked up back-to-back titles in Washington D.C. and Cleveland in August. She will rise to a new career-high ranking just outside the Top-20 on Monday.
Such has been Samsonova’s form in the tournament that she lost serve just six times in Tokyo with wins over Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, Zhang Shuai, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, and Wang Xinyu on way to the final.
“It was a really tough match because huge congrats to Qinwen and her team because she’s playing amazing. Seriously, congrats guys. It was a nervous match today. We were fighting every point.

Playing Tokyo for the first time in over a decade, Zhang is now into her third semifinal of the season. Earlier this year, she captured her third career singles title in Lyon and made the final in Birmingham.
The 33-year-old came into the fall season after a successful summer hard court season, which saw her make back-to-back quarterfinals in Cincinnati and Cleveland before making her first US Open Round of 16.
Zhang came into the quarterfinals looking for her first ever win over Martic. The Croatian had beaten her twice on hard courts. In their last match at 2019 Miami, Martic lost just three games.

New York, Sep 4 (Ians) Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova stormed into the fourth round of the US Open for the seventh time after overcoming No. 21 seed Garbiñe Muguruza in three sets on Saturday.
Kvitova, the No. 21 seed who won the Wimbledon women’s singles title in 2011 and 2014, saved two match points to beat Muguruza, the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon winner, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(10) in 2 hours and 38 minutes.
The clash of two-time Grand Slam champions, the seventh edition of a rivalry dating back to 2015, was a barnburner to the end. Muguruza served for the match at 5-3 in the third set and held two match points on Kvitova’s serve at 6-5, but the Czech escaped both situations to eventually convert her own fourth match point in the super-tiebreak.
Midway through the grass swing, Kvitova’s 2022 record was in the red at 10-13. But a title in Eastbourne has turned her season around: since then,...

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) World No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated former champion Sloane Stephens in straight sets at the US Open in just 1 hour, 13 minutes here Thursday.
Swiatek, who has earlier this year was on a dominant 37-match win streak, won 6-3, 6-2.
The free-swinging Swiatek, 21, a two-time Grand Slam champion, is increasingly looking like she may be ready to scale those heights again. But her current form is still far from the flawless play she exhibited in the spring and early summer.
Still, Swiatek-surprisingly playing for the first time on Arthur Ashe Stadium-easily passed the first significant hurdle in her campaign to add a US Open title to her resume. Stephens, now 29 and ranked No. 51, came in as a very dangerous floater. She was also unseeded, ranked just No. 83 when she won the US Open in 2017.

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) After advancing to the US Open’s second round, Serena Williams was asked if her opening victory had answered any questions she might have had about her ability to compete at the age of nearly 41.
“I don’t think I had any questions,” she said.
Williams defeated World No.2 Anett Kontaveit 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2 on Wednesday before another raucous, rollicking record crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Again facing the last singles match of her glorious career, she moved better and played freer than she has in recent outings.
For the second straight match, Williams’ opponent seemed more unnerved by the momentous circumstances, particularly in critical moments, than she did. After the high emotions of the opening night spectacle, she was more composed and consistent against a far better player ranked 78 spots higher.
“It’s no rush here. I am loving this crowd. I’m a pretty good player.

Earlier this month, Williams announced her impending retirement after the U.S Open. A champion in New York six times, she will face No.80 Kovinic for the first time.
The 27-year-old Montenegrin reached a career-high ranking of No.46 in 2016 and became the first woman from her country to win a Wta Tour title last year at Charleston.

Incredibly, both Gauff and Sabalenka won exactly 131 points each, posting identical success rates on service points (77-of-131) and return points (54-of-131).
Gauff will be considered one of the favourites in the tournament after world number one Iga Swiatek was sensationally eliminated by Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia. Swiatek was sloppy, committing nine double faults to just one from her opponent.
