The increasing wealth gap in the cricket world is the subject of this revealing documentary
This is a contentious argument to venture during an Ashes summer, but it’s worth hearing – and ready made for discussion in the Test Match Special lunch slot. ★★★☆☆ Largely due to its popularity in the Indian sub-continent, cricket is now the second most popular sport in the world. In 2011, two journalists, Brit Sam Collins and Aussie Jarrod Kimber, united by a love of the game, set out to make a film about the future of Test cricket. Death of a Gentleman (2015), directed by Collins, Kimber and Johnny Blank is a record of their journey. References to a gentleman's game and the spirit of the sport open proceedings. The purest form of the game, two innings Test cricket is a legacy of imperialism and is scheduled to last five days. Collins and Kimber believe that this traditional form is under threat from the rise in popularity of three-hour Twenty20 cricket.

Cricket journalists Sam Collins and Jarrod Kimber spent several years making the film. They start by asking whether there is a future for Test cricket and go on to rail against the state of the modern game.
Test cricket, says Tony Greig, one of many former players and commentators featured in the film, is “a character builder”. But the five-day game is threatened by the rise of T20, which has condensed cricket into three-hour, bite-sized chunks of entertainment with big hitters and cheerleaders. India, the main driver of TV revenue, calls the shots to the detriment of the wider game outside the “big three” of India,...
