It’s been six years since Comedy Central’s The Daily Show last brought on a new correspondent, but it’s making up for lost time—by naming three.
Troy Iwata, Josh Johnson, and Grace Kuhlenschmidt are now officially full-fledged correspondents.
As regular viewers already know, all three have been familiar faces on The Daily Show for several months now.
Iwata and Kuhlenschmidt both first appeared on the show last October in in-studio “remote” pieces. Johnson first appeared on air in February with a pre-taped report on sneakerheads’ reactions to Donald Trump’s release of Trump-branded shoes, but has been a writer for the show since 2017.
Tds had not added a new face to its correspondent lineup since 2018, when Jaboukie Young-White was hired. (Young-White departed in 2021.)

The Comedy Central series has signed up three new correspondents to its news team: Troy Iwata, Josh Johnson, Grace Kuhlenschmidt.

The last new correspondent still on the show was Dulcé Sloan, who joined in September 2017 (Jordan Klepper returned in December 2019 having previously been featured on the show).
Iwata and Kuhlenschmidt joined the show in October 2023 and Johnson, who was previously a writer on the show, made his on-screen debut in February. The move to official correspondents just happened, despite being on the show for a few months.

Twitter recently lost one of its premier chaos agents: Jaboukie Young-White, the ace comic responsible for maybe the best single act of trolling in the hellsite’s history.

He was branded “gloriously extra” (BuzzFeed’s words), featured on Rolling Stone’s 25 Under 25 list, wrote for Big Mouth and American Vandal, and spent a few years as a Daily Show correspondent. Note: This story contains spoilers for the “Rap Sh!t” Season 2 finale.
The Season 2 finale of Max’s “Rap Sh!t” sees up-and-coming rap group Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) cementing their management with Francois Boom (Jaboukie Young-White) as they attempt to “fast track” their success in the hip-hop world, according to showrunner Syreeta Singleton, leaving their longtime alliance with Chastity (Jonica Booth) in the dust.
“He’s shinier and he comes with shinier people,” Singleton told TheWrap of Francois Boom, pointing to rapper and songwriter Pardison Fontaine, who is introduced to Shawna and Mia by Francois at the beginning of the final episode. “What it takes to make it a lot of times it’s like alright, ‘Where am I going to get the most eyes?'”
After working with Pardi on what the duo thinks could be their next hit, Singleton notes that they are drawn to the access provided by Francios’ connections,...

“Exmas” filmmaker Jonah Feingold is directing a new romantic comedy, “31 Candles.”
The independent film will feature the ensemble cast of Jackie Sandler, Dale Moss of “The Bachelorette” fame, comedian Jared Freid, Catherine Cohen (“The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous”), “Abbot Elementary” actor Larry Owens and newcomer Sarah Coffey.
The call sheet also includes Caroline Aaron (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Djouliet Amara (“The Big Door Prize” on Apple TV+), Seth Barrish (“Billion”) and Lori Tan Chinn (“Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens”). It recently wrapped in production in New York City.
“31 Candles” is inspired by Feingold’s life and follows a 30-year-old New Yorker named Leo Kadner (Feingold), who has a Bar Mitzvah after running into his former summer camp crush, Eva Shapiro (Coffey). He must navigate situationships, exes, and relatives to complete his Mitzvah project… and maybe even grow up. The coming-of-age film explores tradition, identity, and how far someone will go for a former love.

Rap group Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) are headed on tour in the sophomore installment of Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t,” but tensions mount as the duo struggles to get on the same page, with Rae noting “they don’t trust each other.”
“Trust is literally the biggest thing — trusting each other, but also trusting each other’s intentions for the group and for where they’re headed,” showrunner Syreeta Singleton told TheWrap. “Where you find them, even in Season 2, I don’t know that they’re completely aligned. They’re both still very much figuring out what they want for themselves and are both, at many moments, coming at it from a selfish place.”
After landing their first show together at the end of the Max comedy’s freshman season, Shawna immediately compromised their reputation — and Mia’s trust — with an unpredictable performance going back to her masked video days.

As befits its two rising rap artists who are constantly rethinking and remaking themselves in pursuit of success, “Rap Sh!t” Season 2 has a whole new look. The Max series created by Issa Rae and staring Aida Osman and KaMillion as Shawna and Mia spent its first season being as inventive as its characters, emphasizing the reels, FaceTimes, and social media chaos that they leverage to secure interest (if not paydays) from the music industry establishment. Season 2 doesn’t expand so much as explode the visual scope of the series, focusing on Shawna and Mia’s offline lives.
“We’re peeling back the layers, and we’re going deeper and we’re kind of living with these characters in real time a little more,” showrunner Syreeta Singleton told IndieWire. “So I feel like there was a lot of flexibility and freedom to kind of create a new look.”

Any artist will tell you that “making it” is a myth. Whether it’s music, dance, acting, writing, or anything else — there’s no point at which most people with a creative passion feel it entirely achieved and therefore no longer a priority. Ambition is a hungry beast with a growing appetite, and the standards for success change at every level — and differ between friends and collaborators, testing them every step of the way.
It’s a truth baked into Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t,” which premiered its second season on November 9. Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) are officially going on tour as a group, still miles from the kind of fame and acclaim they dream of, but clearly moving forward, even with a few steps back. “Rap Sh!t,” like “Atlanta” before it, doesn’t shy away from the girls’ increasing respect and access, but reminds viewers that the hardship isn’t over.

Shawna and Mia are finally getting their first taste of fame in "Rap Sh!t," though they're still fighting for a spot on their own tour. In this exclusive sneak peek at season two, the estranged high school-friends-turned-rap duo (played by KaMillion and Aida Osman) get good news from their manager, Francois (Jaboukie Young-White), regarding their first-ever tour - but there's a catch. Despite their viral success and thousands of presale tickets, the pair are informed they can't perform their biggest hit, "Seduce and Scheme," because of their tour mate, headliner Reina Reign.
"That is not on the set list," he tells them and their other manager, Chasity (Jonica Booth). He adds, "We really only got room for 'Tongue,'" referring to their remixed track with Reina.
Confused about the lack of stage time, Shawna asks, "What, they can't give us 10 minutes? We have two songs."

There's an old adage in Hollywood that says "No one wants to be the first, but everyone wants to be the second." This is in reference to the hesitancy studios have to make something that has never been done before out of fear that it won't bring home massive profits, but are eager to chase trends after one of their competitors is rewarded for taking a risk. Studios will also often chase said trends and oversaturate the market until audiences are sick of it, thereby tainting whatever good the trend once held.

One week before the originally scheduled Aug. 10 return of “Rap Sh!t,” Max has delayed the comedy series’ second season to Nov. 9. Season 2 will debut with two episodes followed by weekly drops until the Dec. 21 finale.

“Rap Sh!t” isn’t the first summer series to delay its debut; last week, FX announced that “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin,...

After making a name for himself as a writer, actor, comedian and a must-follow on Twitter, Jaboukie Young-White is on to his next venture: music.
Young-White is dropping his debut album, All Who Can’t Hear Must Feel, this summer via Interscope Records, after the release of three singles earlier this year.
“I kind of Forrest Gump-ed my way into it,” he told THR of his new music career, which began when he was working with Interscope Films as a writer and an executive sent his demo to A&r, leading the label to turn around and offer him a record deal. “It’s always been a very personal thing, so I’m really excited to be able to share it,” Young-White adds, noting that although he’s known for his jokes, he tries to keep the two lanes separate. “I wouldn’t say it’s like musical comedy, but...

Warning: This post contains plot spoilers from “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken.”
Lana Condor, who voices the lead in “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken,” finds Dreamworks’ first female title character very relatable.
Ruby lives in Oceanside with her family, who disguise their secret Kraken identities by claiming they moved from Canada. Unaware of her Kraken lineage, she worries more about typical teenage things like the boy she has a crush on, Connor (Jaboukie Young-White) and the upcoming prom that she wants to attend with her friends.
“I’ve always wanted to work with DreamWorks. I think like so. For so many people in the world, DreamWorks is a major part of their childhood, and growing up, I am and was just such a fan of movies. DreamWorks movies are comfort films,” Condor told TheWrap. “What I loved about it is that it is DreamWorks’ first female title character. I was really excited...

Shy, quirky Oceanside resident Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) mostly keeps to herself — and her favorite subject math — until she discovers some life-changing news in Universal’s “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken.” Her friends desperately want her to attend their high school prom on a boat, but Ruby’s mother Agatha (Toni Collette) doesn’t want her anywhere near the ocean.
Ruby accidentally knocks her crush Connor (Jaboukie Young-White) into the ocean. Ruby jumps in to save Connor, which alerts her Grandmamah — the queen of the Krakens — to her presence. Ruby’s uncle Brill (Sam Richardson) goes to the surface to convince Agatha to let Ruby follow her calling: to be a giant Kraken princess.
In addition to Agatha, there’s a few obstacles — including a mermaid and a suspicious pirate — that stand in Ruby’s way to answer her Kraken calling, but it’s nothing a growing teenager can’t handle.

Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) and Grandmamah (Jane Fonda) in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken’
For decades, movies have been telling stories of various sea creatures residing in the oceans, ranging from man-eating sharks to friendly whales, beautiful mermaids, and even a fish searching for his lost son. However, the latest animated coming-of-age comedy by DreamWorks, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, tells the story of perhaps the most misunderstood sea creature of them all – the Kraken.
The film opens in the little town of Oceanside, where 15-year-old Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor) does her best to fit in at school by posing as a human, even though she’s a sea creature. She has a group of friends and is working up the courage to ask her crush, skater-boy Connor (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White), to the prom. The problem is that her mom, Agatha (voiced by Toni Collette), won...

Prom is a pivotal moment in every high schooler’s life. For Ruby Gillman (voiced by To All the Boys’ Lana Condor) and her friends, the plan was to pivot away from prom night entirely and enjoy a group hang instead. Shunning the formalwear rite of passage also meant Ruby could obey her mum’s rule of staying away from the ocean. A school dance on a boat would mean sailing dangerously close to the line she must never cross and Ruby determines to stay on dry land.
But teens are contrary creatures and as Ruby’s friends pair off it becomes increasingly obvious that the lure of prom is too strong to resist. And Ruby’s crush on fellow mathlete and effortlessly cool skateboarder Connor (Jaboukie Young-White) is compelling her to don a cute gown and follow the crowd…
Ruby’s parents are divided on how much freedom to give their girl.

You’ve encountered Ruby Gillman, the protagonist of DreamWorks’ latest venture, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, before: She’s a nerdy teen (math is her favorite subject), who survives the cliquishness of high school with her close friends (they call themselves “the squad”). She frets about the usual affairs of adolescence, like asking her crush to prom and evading her mother’s watchful gaze. Her parents love her, but could stand to dial back their overprotective instincts. And, oh, Ruby has a big secret: She’s a kraken.
Like a host of supernatural creatures and people before her (Miles Morales of Spider-Man, which would make a pleasant double bill with this film; Darby of Darby and the Dead; and Wei-Chen in American Born Chinese), Ruby lives a double life. She can’t tell her friends that she’s a squid-like creature who, legends say, destroys ships and their sailors. Her parents moved to Oceanside,...

The stars of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, including Lana Condor, Jane Fonda, Annie Murphy, Liza Koshy and Jaboukie Young-White, gathered at the Los Angeles premiere of their DreamWorks film on Wednesday — which, because of the nature of voice work, was the first time some of the actors had actually met.
Noting that she was new to voice acting and “kind of just getting my feet under me with this,” Fonda told The Hollywood Reporter, “What’s strange is you don’t meet the other actors. … I haven’t met any of them. You’re just all by yourself and it’s a challenge, but it’s fun. I’m looking forward tonight to actually meeting these other people.”

Audiences might bemoan the lack of original thinking at the movies these days — all those sequels, remakes, and reboots! — but even new ideas can feel suddenly played out when faced with the horrifying specter of parallel thinking. Consider everything from “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” to “Dante’s Peak” and “Volcano,” “Capote” and “Infamous” to “No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits,” and those are just contemporary examples of the phenomenon. If you’ve got an idea for a movie — hopefully, a good one to boot — chances are, someone else has it, too. And they may even have it at the exact same time.
Such is the case with Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” which arrives on the heels (fins? paws?) of some very similar other animated adventures, like Pixar’s superior “Turning Red” and the studio’s less thrilling entry “Luca,” both of which use monstrous...

Kirk DeMicco’s Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken feels torn between being a story of racial difference and offering a compelling vision of teenage growing pains. Sweet but narratively thin and didactic, the latest from DreamWorks Animation always seems as if it’s trying to find its footing, which is apt insofar as its main character, a 15-year-old champion mathlete named Ruby (Lana Condor), is trying to understand her place in the world.
Ruby goes through high school wondering why her parents, Agatha (Toni Collette) and Arthur (Colman Domingo), are so strict about keeping her away from sea water. And, unfortunately for Ruby, that includes not being able to attend her high school prom, as it’s set to take place on a massive cruise ship in the ocean. One day, while flirting with Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), Ruby accidentally pushes her would-be paramour into the ocean, and upon diving in after...

New York-based actor, writer, and musician Jaboukie Young-White has announced his debut album, All Who Can’t Hear Must Feel, slated to drop on July 21 via Interscope Records. The announcement comes alongside the release of “Goner,” the third single from the album following the electro-rap “BBC” and the industrial punk-rap “Rockwhyler.” “Goner” boasts a similarly gritty, off-kilter style.
Young-White, best known for voicing Disney’s first openly gay character in last year’s Strange World, tells Slant that the concept of “Goner” as “a queer summer anthem” is “kind of tongue-in-cheek.” He believes the song could resonate with young people today because being burnt out and horny is a perennial issue. “There’s duality in realizing you’re fucked. On one hand, you’re fucked, but on the other, you really have nothing to lose,” he says.

If you’re going to make a movie about a kraken — those giant multi-tentacled sea monsters believed to wrestle ships from below — then computer animation is hands down the way to go. The trouble with doing so at a major American studio is that it comes with the imperative to turn these fantastical creatures into cutesy-wootsy kid-movie fodder, which is precisely what DreamWorks Animation does with the reasonably clever myth-twisting toon “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.” The creative team’s high-concept take suggests “Twilight” as a (literal) fish-out-of-water comedy, wherein a family of blue-skinned squid-things attempt to pass as human.
Fifteen years ago, Agatha (voiced by Toni Collette) and Peter (Colman Domingo) abandoned the ocean to raise their kids on land. Despite the obvious hurdles — their conspicuous cerulean tint, floppy limbs and invertebrate status — they’ve been reasonably successful at blending in. Anytime someone looks suspicious, Ruby (Lana Condor) just says she’s from Canada,...

A school teacher is under investigation by the Florida Department of Education after she showed the class the Disney animated movie Strange World.
Jenna Barbee, a teacher at Hernando County’s Winding Waters K-8 school, went viral on TikTok sharing her story on the social media platform.

The students were split in the afternoon between Barbee’s class and another teacher’s class into those that had finished their test and those that had not. Barbees said that all parents had signed permission slips allowing them to show PG-rated movies “with no objections to specific content.”
