Madrid, Aug 7 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga kicks off a new season under its fresh official name this weekend. Yet, the ‘new’ Liga EA Sports is expected to witness the same teams vying for the title, with Fc Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid emerging as the principal contenders.
It, however, marks the dawn of a different era for the reigning champions, Fc Barcelona. With seasoned players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets exiting the club during the summer, the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu, and Inigo Martinez should ably fill the void.
Ousmane Dembele’s surprising move to Paris Saint Germain raised eyebrows, and unless Barca secure another signing or Ansu Fati returns to form, their attacking strength, where Robert Lewandowski is about to turn 35, might falter.

Madrid (Spain), July 27 (Ians) Fc Barcelona’s Moroccan U-23 international defender Chadi Riad will join Real Betis on loan for next season with the chance to then make the move permanent for a price of around three million euros.
Barca have also included a clause in the transfer that would allow them to buy him back for seven million euros.
Riad played 37 times for Barca’s B-team last season and made his first team debut away to Osasuna in November 2022. But he was left out of the squad for the club’s current U.S. tour, and the 20-year-old had been allowed to train with Betis in the days before completing the move, reports Xinhua.
Riad is the second signing Betis have announced in the past 24 hours after the arrival of former Real Madrid and Sevilla midfielder Isco.

Madrid (Spain), Jan 31 (Ians) Fc Barcelona has a difficult away game against Betis on Wednesday, but Xavi Hernandez’s side travels to Seville with the chance of opening an eight-point gap at the top of La Liga and putting the pressure on Real Madrid.
The match against Betis (along with Real Madrid’s clash with Valencia on Thursday) is played now after being postponed due to Barca and Betis facing each other in the Super Cup earlier this month.
Barca eventually triumphed in Saudi Arabia, but needed extra time and a penalty shoot-out to get past Betis, who currently sits sixth in the table and would move level with fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with three points on Wednesday.
The final day of the transfer window looms over preparations for the game, with rumors that Barca right back Hector Bellerin could move to Sporting Lisbon to help free up space and cash...

Riyadh, Jan 11 (Ians) Real Betis and Fc Barcelona square off in the second semifinal of the Spanish Super Cup on Thursday night.
The game pits the winners of last season’s Copa del Rey with La Liga’s runners-up, with the other semifinal between Real Madrid and Valencia on Wednesday. The final will be held on Sunday.
Betis have travelled without their left-back Alex Moreno, who is due to fly to Birmingham on Wednesday to complete a move to Aston Villa.
Betis president Angel Haro has also refused to rule out listening to offers from Atletico Madrid for Spain international striker Borja Iglesias, who has scored eight league goals this season.
The good news for Betis is that striker Juanmi is now fit and will be able to provide cover in attack, while Juan Miranda will play at left-back against his former club, reports Xinhua.

Madrid (Spain), Nov 12 (Ians) Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez is going to have to use his imagination to carry out training sessions during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
A club record 16 Barcelona players have been called up by their respective countries for the World Cup, three more than the 13 who went to Russia in 2018.
That leaves Xavi with just seven first-team regulars in Barcelona, bearing in mind that Gerard Pique has also announced his retirement from the game.
Those players have been given holidays until December 5, but of the seven Sergi Roberto and Franck Kessie are injured, meaning that in theory, Xavi will have to work with reserve goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, defenders Hector Bellerin, Marcos Alonso and Alejandro Balde, while youngster Pablo Torre plays games with Barca’s B-team.

Madrid, Oct 25 (Ians) Fc Barcelona have a vital UEFA Champions League game at home against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Barca are in third place in Group C, three points behind Inter Milan, but if Inter win their home match against Viktoria Plzen in a game that kicks off two hours before Barca’s game at the Camp Nou, Barca can’t finish second, having lost 1-0 in Milan before drawing 3-3 at home against Inter a fortnight ago.
That means that, for the moment, they have to prepare for Wednesday’s match as if there is everything to play for, but when the game begins, all that could be at stake is a place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.
“There is a minimum amount of hope,” commented Barca midfielder Pedri in Spanish sports paper Marca.

Barcelona on Monday confirmed on social media that Sergio Roberto has dislocated his shoulder.
“Sergi Roberto has a dislocated left shoulder. He is out and his recovery will determine his availability.”

Madrid, Oct 21 (Ians) There is no halt to La Liga in this intense start to the football season in Spain, with Matchday 11 kicking off just a day after the 10th round of games came to an end on Thursday night.

Madrid, Oct 19 (Ians) Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez is expected to bring changes when his side entertains Villarreal at Camp Nou on Thursday.
The game comes on the back of last week’s 3-3 draw at home to Inter Milan, which almost ended Barca’s hopes of advancing in the Champions League and Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid, where Barca rarely looked as if they were going to get anything from their eternal rivals, reports Xinhua.
Barca were flat and lacked a change of pace in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and also looked vulnerable to Madrid’s rapid counterattacks: something that Villarreal, with players such as Arnaut Danjuma, are also highly effective at.
Xavi is likely to bring Ansu Fati into his starting 11 for Ousmane Dembele, whose form has dipped in recent matches, while youngster Gavi also looks certain to be back in the side.

Madrid, Oct 14 (Ians) The ‘Clasico’ between Real Madrid and Fc Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night is the big game of Matchday 9 in La Liga, but there are other things to keep an eye out for as well this weekend in Spain.
1. Real Madrid to twist the knife against Barca?
It has not been a good week for Barcelona after the wildly entertaining but ultimately disastrous 3-3 draw at home to Inter Milan left them needing a miracle to avoid an early exit from the Champions League for the second year running.
Real Madrid look well-placed to rub salt into the wounds, given that Carlo Ancelotti’s men are already assured of their place in the last 16 of the competition, and apart from questions over Thibaut Courtois, they will have everyone available, reports Xinhua.

Madrid, Oct 13 (Ians) The ‘Clasico’ between Real Madrid and Fc Barcelona will capture most of the headlines this weekend in Spain as the top two sides in La Liga renew their eternal rivalry.
Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen and Hector Bellerin are all out for Barcelona, and the absences in central defense are what will most worry Xavi Hernandez against a Real Madrid side that has already ensured its place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
Players such as Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Federico Valverde will look to cause Barca problems on the break, and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti’s only worry ahead of the match is whether or not goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois can shake off a back problem.

Madrid, Oct (Ians) Besides an uphill struggle to book their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League, Fc Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan on Tuesday has left coach Xavi Hernandez with problems in defense.
Although Barca can look to a dreadful decision by the Var not to award them a late penalty after a handball in the Inter penalty area, that should not disguise a poor performance on the night.
The defeat means Barca have to beat Inter next Wednesday in Camp Nou and probably also Bayern Munich to book a place in the last 16 that is so important to the club’s economy.

Madrid, Oct 3 (Ians) Spanish giants Fc Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have vital Champions League matches away from home on Tuesday night.
Barcelona visit Inter Milan and need to avoid defeat following their 2-1 loss away to Bayern Munich in their previous group game.
That defeat means another loss in Milan would suddenly leave Xavi Hernandez’s side with a lot of work to do to reach the last 16 of the competition, and Barca’s delicate financial situation means they cannot afford to miss out on the knockout stages.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 30 (Ians) Injuries have affected the plans of Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez ahead of his side’s visit to play Mallorca on Saturday.
The international break saw Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Jong all pick up injuries (long-term ones in the case of Araujo and Depay), while Kounde and De Jong are unlikely to be fit for Saturday.
To make matters worse for Xavi, right back Hector Bellerin suffered a calf injury in training and is also out of action for between two to three weeks.
That means Sergi Roberto is almost certain to start on the right of the Barcelona defense, although the fact he is recovering from injury means Eric Garcia could be asked to move across from central defense, with Gerard Pique partnering Andreas Christensen at the heart of the back line.
