Simu Liu may be starring in one of the biggest movies of 2023, but no one will mistake “One True Loves” for that honorific. But, somehow, this rom-com adaptation is more plastic than “Barbie.”
Liu leads “One True Loves,” the big screen adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2016 novel of the same name. Liu is Sam, a high school music teacher who finally lands the woman of his dreams, childhood crush Emma (Phillipa Soo). The only issue? Emma’s first husband Jesse (Luke Bracey) was presumed dead after a fatal helicopter crash, and miraculously is rescued four years later, proving to be alive and very ready to rekindle his relationship with Emma right before her wedding to Sam.
If the premise sounds like the stuff of beach reads, it is. The Reid cinematic universe is rapidly expanding, with Prime Video series “Daisy Jones & the Six” having gone viral and fans...

"No matter what you do, you're going to break somebody's heart." The Avenue has revealed the trailer for the film One True Loves, a new romantic dramedy from filmmaker Andy Fickman. Based on the book of the same name, the film is one of these cliche, cheesy stories about a woman forced to decide between two men she loves deeply. Is there such a thing as more than one true love? Yet another modern movie trying to grapple with the question of monogamy and whether it's still relevant anymore. A woman is unexpectedly forced to choose between the husband she has long thought dead and the fiance who has finally brought her back to life. The three people at the center are played by Phillipa Soo as Emma, Simu Liu as Sam, Luke Bracey as Jesse, with a supporting cast including Michaela Conlin, Tom Everett Scott, Gary Hudson, Oceana Matsumoto,...

The problem with “Before You Know It,” the debut feature from writer-director Hannah Pearl Utt (“Disengaged”), is that it overloads its 90-or-so minute running time with characters and subplots. Instead of focusing on the strength of some of her material here, Utt strikes out in far too many directions.
Utt herself plays a stage manager named Rachel, who is first seen walking down a Manhattan street with another woman; they talk rapidly about their lives, and Rachel offers some information about an actress mother who might have died that sounds too much like plot exposition. It turns out that this meeting between the women is something of a date, but the rather passive Rachel is too tied to her family responsibilities to go any further with it.

A case of quirkiness overload, “Before You Know It” is about two sisters — one sane, the other comically nutty — dealing with a radical shakeup in the family. That dynamic runs through the entire film, in which annoying characters behaving irrationally exasperate everyone else, sometimes including the viewer. This feature directorial debut for Hannah Pearl Utt, who co-stars with co-writer Jen Tullock, is a diverting yet awkward mix of farcical elements and earnest feeliness. The two never quite gel, and it’s hard to care about the nice characters who somewhat improbably put up with wildly insufferable ones. There’s some invention and good humor here, yet the whole feels inorganic.
Utt plays Rachel, a 30-ish New York City native. She works as stage manager for her family’s tiny Village legit theater not so much out of love as grim duty — if she left, everything would surely fall apart. Older...

‘Before You Know It’ Review: Hannah Pearl Utt’s Feature Debut Proves Quirk Can Still Work — Sundance
While exact figures are not (currently) available, it stands to reason that every Sundance Film Festival has played home to at least one film that includes a major character uttering some version of the arrested development-centric chestnut, “I need to learn how to be an adult.” Ostensible grownups learning how to be actual grownups has long been a major theme of many film festival offerings, and Sundance is no exception to that seemingly mandatory programming rule.
And yet Hannah Pearl Utt’s feature directorial debut, “Before You Know It,” is an exception. A quirky, slightly off-kilter feature about a wacky family and the stunted people who populate it, the basic bones of “Before You Know It” sound like innumerable other American indies that have made their way through the festival world. Bolstered by Utt’s wit — and that of her frequent creative partner Jen Tullock who, like Utt, also co-wrote...

Sleepy Hollow is, sadly, still deader than Ichabod before Katrina worked her magic. But that didn’t stop star Janina Gavankar from throwing us a ye olde bone or two about what might’ve happened if Fox had renewed the supernatural drama for a fifth season.
“I do think that we ended on a great note, story-wise,” she told TVLine before the Saturn Awards Wednesday. “Crane is off in [Washington,] D.C. He’s really found his footing. Jenny and he have found a new home there.” And, as we saw in the final moments of the series finale, “He and Diana are going off strong,...
